i know endgame probably cost an absolute fortune when every single penny on the balance sheet is accounted for (even if it was 1b, 1.5b, 2b)... it still pulled in 2.8b

Are you confusing it with its sequel? The Mask was a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge hit and secured Jim Carrey's position as box office gold.
All the article did is take box office and divide it by budget and call that profit heh
for people who don't know, the bigger a movie is, the bigger the outgoings are on the balance sheet... it doesn't just stop at budget and marketing

I said this in another thread, but Mendelson is one of the worst things to ever happen to box office reporting.

All we know for sure is that it had good ROI, maybe even one of the best for a comic book movie.
It is a massive success, and I'm enjoying every second of it.
And without its gross being bolstered by China I'm sure it is highly, highly profitable. But only the studios themselves know exact figures on any given movie all we can do is guess.

Scott Mendelson, the Forbes contributor where all of this factually incorrect "most profitable comic book movie of all time" stuff is coming from.
It's had an incredible box office run and will be extremely profitable but in no way is it the most profitable comic book movie of all time, full stop.
The film has two other companies that helped pay for it. It is super common on the majority of films to have co-financers even among the major studios.
But whoever thought it needed anyone else brought in to negate risk looks silly right about now.
The first mask was pretty successful from what I remember. They did a damn good job with it considering they deviated from the comic.

This article from a few weeks ago has more detail, and puts the profits about on par with Avengers: Infinity War.
ROI arguments based on production budget and worldwide gross always struck me as silly, because it favours microbudget films. It also sort of insinuates that, if you released a bunch of Paranormal Activities instead of one Star Wars or Avengers film, you would be maximizing profits. Which isn't true for a host of reasons.
Still Joker is probably going to be in the top 10 superhero films of all time for raw dollar profits. Maybe top 5. So it's a huge success.
