Not sure why people are quoting this as if it's anything remotely controversial (okay, maybe the derailing is annoying). I like the MCU but it's obviously focused action popcorn flicks as opposed something like this, and it would be great to see one or two films from them deviate from the usual tone more than usual. So what you're actually looking for is share of the population that went to see each movie, but people can go multiple times, so therein lies another issue.
How about just saying how much money it makes. That has better sounding numbers that everyone can understand without extra math!

Inflation has grown at a higher rate than the American population.
You can adjust for inflation, it makes no sense to adjust for population
Logan is so much better than Joker. I really hope that whatever remains of FOX is allowed to keep making Logan-esque comic book movies.

you can if you want to. There's no law to how this is tracked. Total box office money is just what people have decades and decades of built in familiarity and context for.
