Hope this means more original Dice centric type MP games without the EA shadow of shite tainting them.

Haven't they already struck a deal with Nexon?

Bleugh. There goes my interest. Don't they specialise in online F2P stuff?

I was interested until I learnt Nexon is in on this..

Pretty much exactly my reaction.

Spderlund already made more money than he could ever spend, when you already have that much money it becomes much less of a motivating factor.

I'm sure he could spend a hell of a lot of money establishing a new development company, assuming he's bankrolling some of it himself.

Lol how long before Patrick Söderlund's new studio gets bought out buy EA... Or hell even Activision

Patrik Söderlund owns 54.44% of the company, no one can buy it without him selling. Ownership shares as per 2018-11-08:

Patrick Söderlund: 54.44%
Nexon: 33.33%
Johan Andersson: 4.44%
Jenny Huldschiner: 2.22%
Stefan Strandberg: 2.22%
Robert Runesson: 1.67%
Magnus Nordin: 1.67%

The Verge said:
To create that, Söderlund says that the studio will make use of emerging technologies to build new kinds of online interactive experiences. The press release announcing Embark is filled with buzzwords like "connected players, big data, speech recognition, cloud computing, and advanced AI." In practice, Söderlund says this means finding ways to utilize these disparate technologies to design games that are very different from what's currently available.
Games today are usually built around one layer. You run around and you shoot people, or you play soccer. What if you could have 10 abstraction layers of simulation in a game where you could choose to become a farmer, or go into politics, or join the military, or be a professional athlete, inside of that world? These are some of the questions that are in my head. As I started thinking about those, along with some of the people I'm working with, I realized that it's ambitious, and almost naive, but I think you have to go down that route to do something extraordinary.
...I can see why EA might have been hesitant to fund this one.

While it's easy to point the finger at EA and say "they've killed DICE, this is why he's leaving, EA suck!", I think it's also worth remembering that for a lot of highly experienced, talented programmers, engineers, and architects the drive to continue bettering their own skills and stimulating their interests requires exploring new, challenging horizons that may differ from work that has, for them, become stagnant. Andersson's technical work towards Frostbite's various iterations and the relative projects has been monumental, but he's been doing it for eighteen fucking years. How many times can you work on Battlefield and whatnot before it becomes a little tiresome, and the skills you've accumulated are no longer being challenged in ways that ignite a passion in your work?

Obviously yes there may be other underlining troubles with EA and DICE, when I see extremely senior staff leave and move on from studios that are, irrespective of quality, nevertheless producing extremely similar games over literally a decade or more, I can't blame them for leaving and wanting to try something fresh elsewhere. This is especially true for designers and programmers.

Misguided need to defend corporations is much weirder

Look at who you're talking to for a second. Take a minute and review the person you're responding to, and the content that came from their post.

How fucked is your critical thinking to conjur up the assumption that from a two-word response can automatically imply corporate apologist?

Are you that invested in consumerist discourse that any sort of response that isn't a positive one, within the context of that post, automatically brings a red flag up? Like, do you even bathe?

Good for him. 18 years is a damn long time to be in a company, particularly as far as games devs go.
It's often great to get a new perspective and challenge.

Thanks! That was fun back then. After it I was working more on scaling up Frostbite and then later on research with SEED so have had less chance to interact with gamers and the community. But plan to interact a lot more now with Embark and us doing both games and tech.

Oh and joined resetera here so that is a start :)

Was indeed a veery long time, but kept being interesting and challenging in many different roles and teams. But now for something very new!
