I never expected them to play the disks, but there needs to be on-hardware emulation. If BC is all streaming based that will suck.

People are expecting PS5 to natively play PS1-3 games from disc by brute force, with Xbox One BC all the games are individually emulated.

Just bring over my PS1 purchases from the PS3 era and we're all good. Digital copies are the best approach to their implementation of backwards compatibility for PS1 and PS2. I don't know enough regarding the complexity of PS3 to have an opinion other than I hear the console wasn't easy to emulate.

The latter, but does it matter? Back compatibility is back compatibility and if it has BC for PS3 in any form, even limited, it should work with these discs too, just like on Xbox.

Honestly as long as the PS5 is 100% backwards compatible with PS4 games (both digital and physical) then this is fine.

It doesn't make sense to do PS3 digital downloads but not PS3 discs. Both PS3 and PS4 discs are Blu-ray.

If it's BC with PS4 discs and PS3 digital games, it'll be BC with PS3 discs too.

Microsoft also had to get permission from the publishers/developers on a per game basis.
