Thought this was interesting doesn't confirm anything but with Jason Schreier records and insider information it brings in some insight on what backwards compatibility will be for the ps5.

I expect PS4 backward compatibility physical and digital, never expected PS3, PS2 or PS1 physical or digital.

While this would suck, PS5 having BC with PS4 is the main clencher for people looking to possibly upgrade. Anything else is a bonus.

I'm sure PS5 is going to do a gamepass thing, but honestly, if they just supported a gamepass that was only PS3 and before titles, I would be so okay with that. There's a lot of PS3 titles that I would love to check out. And of course, the PSX and PS2 are loaded with classics too but I want my easily accessible Tokyo Jungle port.

It doesn't seem like he's touting insider information here. Like why would a digital download work but not a disc?

Not having PS1/2 support is really disappointing if true. I understand PS3 but basically anything can emulate a PS1 or 2 at this point, but I guess this is Sony's way of getting you to buy their classic consoles and PSN releases again on the next generation.

So they still won't use the Xbox system of letting you download games after putting in the disc? That really sucks.

I was really hoping it would read disks. It's kind of insane that old games are so reliant on old hardware to function, and I was really hoping the PS5 could be a first step in the right direction.

This really sucks. I really wanted full PROPER BC.

It can't be that hard to enable the feature either.

Well, they're not MS for PS3.
+ I guess they fear it's too easy to pirate PS1/2 games, even though they should and could allow it.

I guess this should be expected.

The PS4 could easily do PS1 backward compatibility and they didn't. Neither with CDs or with the PS3 classics they've done that...

Could it just identified the disc you put in it and then download the corresponding digital file ? I really hope it will be BC with more than just PS4 without having to repay for games I already own.

It hope for it to be able to play all the digital games. Anyone expecting physical for things outside of PS4 and maybe PS3 were crazy though.

This isn't really news...Doesn't sound like he is saying anything from an insider information pov...just his own personal take on it.

To be fair, I don't expect disc support either.

I do wish the classic stuff was more like how the Xbox One does it - by putting in the disc, it can read that you have the original disc and will then download the game online. If you could do that with the PS2 and PSone games, it'd be great.

It doesn't make sense to do PS3 digital downloads but not PS3 discs. Both PS3 and PS4 discs are Blu-ray.

If it's BC with PS4 discs and PS3 digital games, it'll be BC with PS3 discs too.

Man if i was making the p5 i would make it a priority that the p5 plays every generation. Even PSP and Vita via digital, to make it a true anniversary machine

Sony should buy BP, and remake their previous greatest hits. It seems that's the only way we'll get to play some of their classics.

I don't think anyone was expecting physical discs but there's still hope for digital downloads which would be awesome.

I don't get it. Can't it just recognize a game disc and then prompt a digital download like Xbox does? Or is he saying it won't be able to recognize disc's from those systems at all?

Edit: He was specifically replying to digital re-releases. So what about games that are not re-released?

Every time i get mildly excited by a patent about PS5's BC capabilities, I remind myself of the PS2 on PS4 initiative to ground myself.

Sony will 100% want to sell you the stuff you already own again and will cripple any legacy BC to do it.

At most I see potential PS3 support on PS5 being about as well planned and supported as PS2 on PS4.

I am still not convinced they wont mess up having all PS4 games on PS5 somehow.

would it be too hard to make it so the PS5 could rip games from discs?

I know nothing about any of this but you can do it on a computer right? So why not make it a feature, rip your games, play on emulator.

Who would even play disc PS1/PS2 games these days?
And IIRC PS4 didn't even read CD-ROM, so PS1 wouldn't work anyway.
