They're all right, but just like taiyaki, I think they taste a bit cheap.

But it's quintessential. For years my 4-7 stumble home from the rock bar 7-11 snack would always end up being poccari sweat/CC lemon for hydration, big frank or spicy chiki (whichever they still have left), their delicious fries, and a choco monaka jumbo. That middle bar crunch, the no mess outside, the perfect breakable/biteable squares. It may be cheap, but it's a perfect snack. Also a true lifesaver in summer. My onaka needs monaka

Edit: again, I updated my post with actual advise to hit the stations as that'll have more traditional and specialty/novelty snacks. Also always in rotation so you never know how long it'll last or if it'll go big and international haha.

Double edit: If going to Sapporo, Shiroi Koibito for daaaaays.

Baumkuchen is my favorite. Its a ring cake from German that Japan does really well. I grab like 2-3 big ones to take home every time I visit.

These are my absolute favourite gummy sweets, the apple and pine apple in particular.

Oooooo also the assortment of Jagabee and Jyagariko. I'm quite particular to the mentai cheese Jyagariko.

Happy (shiawase) Butter Jagabee is great too. Depending on what towns they go to, you can get fresh Jagabee as well.

Takinoko no Sato/Kinoko no Yama
It's all personal preference which you like (both are pictured below), based on the ratio of ingredients, but I think these are pretty much just superior pocky. They have different flavors, so pick 'em up if you fancy. I recall participating in a Splatoon 1 event in which people were competing to decide which was superior. I go back and forth, personally, so I'm a traitor.

Picked up a box of these today, not bad! (The mushroom ones). Will try the the others ones next time.
