I recognize the sound of the silenced PP7 from GoldenEye in games, movies and TV all the time. Same with the alarm sound.

The sound of an imp dying in Doom is also the sound of a camel used in Age of Empires 2.

My kids play this dumb game called Prodigy.

Just listen to this, drives me insane every time I hear it:

There's lots of Sound Libraries and they are used on many media, but nowadays as a sound designer I try to never use a stock SFX as it is. Always alter it, mix it with some custom foley or at least other stock sounds. In the era of internet is just a matter of time people find out all media where the same stock effects play.

Whenever I heard this

All I heard was (Ghostbusters intro/library scene)

And now I'm mad I can think of the game with an obvious Silent Hill 2 sound-alike menu sounds.

There's a stock monster sound that shows up constantly in games and othe media, but I never knew where it originated:

This is just the example that comes to mind but I hear it all the time.

I know this isn't what it's originally from, but I immediately think of Mass Effect whenever I hear this. (It's used in the "vision" Shepard keeps seeing throughout the first game, which gets played often enough to really get ingrained in the player's head.)

Not sound effects, but these two songs from Star Ocean 3 and Persona 3 (among others) use the same samples.

Wasn't this effect used for Bowser at one point as well or am I crazy?

This Ys thing isn't just a sound effect, it's a musical phrase and holy shit is it ever a blatant Metroid ripoff. Can't believe Nintendo hasn't sued Falcom into oblivion over this.

The sound effect for throwing a grenade in Splatoon, has always reminded of the sound that enemies make when they fly off screen in Goof Troop.

The sound of the kids laughing when you boot up Diddy Kong Racing, I've heard it many, many times after that

Yup it's this. I recognize that laugh in an instant. Someone even made a video about it

The sound of filling a fuel canister in Among Us is the same as Master Chief's shield recharging in Halo.

I played a game recently that had a SFX that sounded almost exactly like the 'coin' from Outrun, but can't remember what game it was.

Many are obviously taken from libraries and are going to be the same: I've heard the 'jungle soundscape' so many times through the years.
Or like Resident Evil menu SFX, which are also used in Xcom enemy unknown and a number of other games

It's not really from another game, but the door closing sounds in House Flipper sounded like when a friend on AIM logged out.

The sound these exit warps make in Wind Waker is lifted straight from Majoras Mask, the background drone that plays when you have only 6 minutes left.

There is a sound effect in video games that always bothers me. It's the 'page turning' sound effect, I guess you would call it. It's the sound of someone flipping a page/piece of paper, followed by a 'thump'-like sound. I just want to know what that thump sound is supposed to be. I've heard this sound effect in Castlevania 64 (for sure) and I think Eternal Darkness. I can't find anything on the origin of this sound effect.

I think I know the sound you're referring to, and I always assumed that the little thump at the end was the hardcover being plopped down after flipping to the desired page. It doesn't fit when just used to make a turning page audible, mind you. That's just how I always saw that sound playing out in my mind's eye whenever I've encountered it. Either that or someone bumped the mic at the end of the recording and never edited it out. 😆

A lot of nes games share sound effects.

One of the earlier mission impossible films uses the rollercoaster tycoon crowd noise.

The laughs and screams in RCT 1 and 2 are used in a ton of movies, ads, etc...

pretty sure they didnt originate from there, they are all just using the same sound banks, but holy shit if every time i hear them i say "hey, thats from rct!" Lol

The Botw cooking jingle is similar to one in the Longest Journey when you talk to an instrument seller in the market.

Many developers use stock sound packages for their games. Doom and Quake kind of "ruined" their respective packages since the sounds used are so closely linked with their games now.

Matt Uelmen used alot of stock music snippets when creating the Diablo 2 soundtrack. One example is the Harem theme using chanting that is also used in the movie The Craft from 1996:

Enix/Quintet in the 16-bit era was when I first noticed shared sounds between games, I just assumed it was, like, a "house soundfont" shared within a company.

There's also the fairly infamous case of Soul Blazer using the same hero grunts as ActRaiser despite the main character looking like a kid by comparison.

Not just grunts: basically every type of sword strike sound effect, casting magic, enemies taking damage, the HP meter refilling, etc. was taken from Actraiser for Soul Blazer and later games.

Most sounds in games are not original but are from stock libraries, so you can see (hear, ha ha) many of the same sounds. As mentioned in the thread. Pretty common. Foley artists in general especially for quick turnaround projects are just using library sounds they modify for the scenes.

My favourite sound effect will always be the silencer sound used in Goldeneye N64. I forget what sound library it's actually from but every time I hear it in another game or movie I can't help but laugh.

I'm not so sure because you can hear the rollercoaster drop and people scream. There's even the excited kid yelling "come on" to get to the next ride. It's in mission impossible 2 about 30-31 minutes into the film when they're talking on the balcony.

Like half the music from the NES and SNES eras was ripped off from other games, movies, and even mainstream popular music from major artists. Nintendo did it too.

Low hanging fruit but the Visceral attack sounds effects across FROM titles. I feel like that sound effect is used in other media too. I think I heard it in Attack on Titan

One of my pet peeves are audio cues in games that sound almost identical to other audio cues that don't have the same meaning. Like the little goat statues in re village and the grub sound in hollow knight. Though I do wonder if the similar sound in hollow knight is an intentional troll.

The yellow (red?) birds in Ghost of Tsushima and the turkeys (?) in Horizon Zero Dawn.

Not exactly what the thread is about: Oxenfree's OST and the first few notes of the theme that plays when the sun goes supernova in Outer Wilds.

That's because it's actually the sound of a Camel.

It just happened to come from the same sound effects CD.

Ragnarok Online used so many stock sound effects that you can spot them virtually everywhere - in TV, and in games.
But I encountered so many of them in Ragnarok Online first that it drives me a bit bananas seeing them elsewhere.

Maybe this counts? Battle Clash and Metal Combat for the SNES were both by Intelligent Systems and also had the same composer, so the tutorial from Metal Combat marks your progression with an early Fire Emblem jingle:

The jingle also appears in Tetris Attack (also by IntSys)
