Has the time of Amiibos ended?

Was it always a shitty gimmick that preyed on collectors?

Did it add ANYTHING to games?

That's been obvious ever since Switch launched and Nintendo dialed back the release of new Amiibos considerably. I think they are nice collectibles, but I've never been interested in their in-game usage.

They are not super relevant but they still sell.

The Pearl and Marina series sold very, very well in Japan last year.

They are still selling quite good. Not as great as at the start but honestly what would you expect. Houses are getting full. Apart from smash I was never that interested inntheir possibilities I like their designs tho

Smash still has a few to release, but it really does only seem like Smash at present using them. So when Smash Ultimate is done (Which feels like... never at present) I guess Amiibos are done.

Good riddance by the way, I don't mind the trophies, but they are some of the sleaziest things nintendo has done. Breath of the Wild hid some of the games best weapons and Epona behind them which was arse and the less said about Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, the better.

I now show a lot more discernment in the ones I select to buy and I buy them PURELY as desk or shelf ornaments and with zero consideration for their game usage.

For me personally, they certainly are very faded from priority now. I'm kinda waiting for Richter to come out because he's one of my favorite Castlevania characters and I don't have access to any other collectible featuring him, so I think it'd be cool to get the amiibo to rep him on my desk at home.

I've literally got 20 queued up in orders on Nintendo UK for when they release lol.
Link's Awakening hype.

Depends on what you want from them. When they were first being rolled out, people had the lofty idea of a Disney Infinity sort of game with Nintendo characters, and given how weird and hard it can be to get models of certain Nintendo characters, collectors horded them immediately before it became clear they were never going to be a rarity. As cool little Nintendo collectibles with innocuous DLC connected, they aren't bad value and still get rolled out well (I mean, Link's Awakening ones are literally days away). As the next big thing? Yeah, that age died after the first wave of Smash ones got replenished in store shelves.

As someone who foolishly collected close to 90 of these stupid things, it's been a huge relief to see Nintendo massively cut back on releasing new ones. I have no more room for them, and my amiibo fever died down years ago. Now I mainly buy them out of a sick sense of obligation, not because I actually want another hunk of plastic cluttering up my room.

It's honestly a shame I have to pick another one up in six days when Link's Awakening releases.

I had all the smash line, kept them in the boxes and sealed. Ended up selling them all just as smash was realised on the switch, so the prices were high.
I've kept about 10 that I had opened, plus the Solaire one.
Got snake or preorder and I will be displaying that on my desk with solaire.
For the breath of the wild one's, I just used a pack of NFC cards I got off eBay and installed the files for those amiibo on them.

I am sad, I should have bought the Lucina and Corrin Amiibos earlier, now their price is all jacked up.
There is not going to be another reprint is there?

If Nintendo made a F2P MOBA where you unlocked playable characters via your amiibo collection, it could spur on the Next Age Of Amiibos.

When they didnt release Amiibo for the Arms series it was obvious they were no longer all-in on it.

But they still release Amiibo, for select titles and I think they're fine with that.

Just yesterday actually I decided to resume my Smash collection and try the last ones I miss. Bought 9 and now I miss just a few of the really tricky and expensive ones :(

Then I'm up to par with the set so far.

Do you realize we are getting a Banjo Kazooie amiibo eventually???

Btw plastic toys have died, amiibo survived only because of their collectible value.

They are still great Nintendo collectibles of characters that some of them will never see any other type of collectible.
Now they sell because of that.

Better design than the pops piece of shit too. Im glad Nintendo didnt lend them the IPs to them, thats for sure.

I have a bunch of amiibo, but never was crazy about them.
Also, Nintendo does only release few new amiibo nowadays which makes me care even less.

The days of them releasing a dozen amiibo at a time are over. From here on it seems like we'll get the rest of the Smash set, and a few various ones from different series that have proven popular (ie Zelda, Mario). I'm hoping for a small set for Three Houses.

Yes. They are great figures though

If they really want it to take off they gotta make a f2p brawler

Now they are just collectible figures to tie-in with big releases. Their use as a game accessory has pretty much ended.

That shitty Animal crossing board game single handedly made Nintendo scale them back massively, but they're still coming along.

They're just much more conservative. I would be surprised if we didn't get some for three houses eventually after FE warriors got some. We won't be getting anything like a huge collection for anything other than smash again though.

I hope not, I still think theyre really fun little collectibles, and the quality is great these days. I picked up Pichu in July, have two coming next week. I'd buy a Gooigi lol

I think Nintendo needed to emphasize amiibos when the Wii U was falling. They were a nice source of income. Now? They're nice merchandise in addition to Switch and mobile games.

The moment I realised we were getting multiple Link models is when I gave up on collecting them. The milking went too far.

I also hate how they have been used to lock DLC content or content that should be in the game. I remember Metroid 2 remake locking a difficulty mode and Metroid Fusion costume for instance. I have no idea if Nintendo still does this. Can anyone confirm?

I understand some having enjoyment with collecting the figures. I don't want to take that away from them. As long as the whole locking content behind Amiibo is not a thing anymore.

There are several coming out next week, but yeah, there's no way they would be able to release as many as they used to. The ones they do release these days are great though. Quality has improved significantly. Even if it's in small numbers, I hope to see amiibo continue for years to come. They're a nice little extra you can buy with a game. I don't really care about the functionality at all.

Perhaps the best amiibo is days away from release:
Jl7x5MA.jpg

But Nintendo has obviously slowed down on them and games don't emphasize them as much. It was always difficult to balance their integration into games. You can't make them too vital, but also not useless. Over time I think fans have leaned towards buying them as Nintendo figures instead of actually using them in games.

No matter what the future holds, it's pretty incredible that the concept has lasted FIVE years. That's a much longer shelf life than many expected.

I only bought Solaire of Astora and I didn't even buy the crappy Switch version of Dark Souls. I've only used the Amiibo to get some extra, semi worthless items from the Amiibo Gazebo in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

I must say I was really surprised that Fire Emblem Three Houses didn't come with new amiibos.

The hype and interest is clearly not the same but they will stick around for an extra buck for Nintendo. The only amiibo I ever got was the Metroid one for Samus Returns.

I wish they were useful in Mario Maker 2 to justify getting the last ones, at least. At the very least, the promised to make use of them in Animal Crossing.

Nintendo was smart to not make an amiibo only game like Disney and Skylanders so they'll never really leave.
Smash and Zelda + Shovel Knight still are releasing new ones.

I have a lot of them (most of the Smash series and some others like FE or Splatoon) but I'm glad they decided to launch less Amiibos in the Switch era. First games had a lot of them (BotW, Odyssey collections) but I'm surprised that they haven't release any Amiibo for Fire Emblem or other big games.

Is the Joker amiibo out yet? I'd buy classic Sonic and fat Pikachu in a heartbeat as well.

I wonder if Chrom/Tiki didn't sell well? If they could get the three house leaders made and out by the final dlc they'd sell a ton.

I think they're cool. I ended up with like 20 I think, just buying the ones I like. I'm looking forward to Richter and I hope they make some dragon quest ones as well.
