It's really annoying how a lot of japanese games have their titles in all caps or include alternate titles on Steam. This is a mess:

I guess JRPGs are sort of cheating, but Bravely Default and Octopah Traveler are both clunkers. Someone already mentioned Let Us Cling Together, which is real bad, and Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber sounds like someone put a sentence into Google Translate and didn't bother to localize it.

I can't attest to whether the series is "great" or not, but I've always laughed at the title Killzone. I can't believe that's a straight-faced title -- it sounds like the name of a fake video game from Arrested Development.
Up until Person of Lordly Caliber, Ogre Battle was just using the titles of Queen songs for all its titles, so blame Freddie Mercury.

Some of the Ogre Battle games were named after Queen songs. So, Halcali is either pretending that a bad Ogre Battle game came out, but the name was good (despite clearly being absurd), or they are taking a swipe at Ogre Battle: Let Us Cling Together, while (confusingly) mocking the name. I only see that as a possibility because I know some people disliked the name and were specifically making the "I Want to Ride My Bicycle" joke back in the day.

The Legend of Heroes.

Yeah, they should just drop The Legend of Heroes and call the series Trails going forward. Trails in the Sky and Trails of Cold Steel are great titles. I know there's some interest in the pre-TitS LoH games but these days no one plays the Trails games because of the connection to those older ones.

Nah man, Yakuza is much better for marketing and makes perfect thematic sense for when they chose the title with the first game. Like a dragon sounds like a f2p mobile game or a janky b tier RPG.

Fully agree here. "Yakuza" is clean and that word represents so much. It's all you need to know about the culture and attitude the game is representing. It's as effective as movie titles like "Casino" or "Goodfellas".

"Like a Dragon" sounds like a Japanese play on Madonna's "Like a Virgin". It's pretty corny, if I'm being honest.

I actually think a lot of japanese Square Enix games' names aren't terrible. They end up being memorable and can be easily trademarked. One exception though is Kingdom Heart spinoffs because the numbers are just awful.

The worst are generic fantasy jargon, like Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

Or generic word salads that don't mean anything, like Horizon Zero Dawn.

Or just generic platitudes, like Life is Strange. If I recall correctly, the working title was "What if", which is a much, much better name. Too bad it was already used.

Nah, Breath of the Wild is the perfect name for that game.

I'm gonna go with Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. Fantastic game but a pretty bad title. I honestly kind of like it because it's so bad. Why didn't they just go with Performa? I dunno.
I don't know... I like Tokyo Mirage Sessions a lot more than Performa. I can take or leave the #FE part but it's more catching than Performa; I feel like Performa needs something else to it.

It's going to be hard to top Rayforce/Galactic Attack/Layer Section/Gunlock.

One great game, four terrible names.

natsuiro-high-school-seisyun-hakusyo-391109.19.jpg

Rough translation is: Summer-Colored High School ★ Adolescent Record – A Summer At School On An Island Where I Contemplate How The First Day After I Transferred, I Ran Into A Childhood Friend And Was Forced To Join The Journalism Club Where While My Days As A Paparazzi Kid With Great Scoops Made Me Rather Popular Among The Girls, But Strangely My Camera Is Full Of Panty Shots, And Where My Candid Romance Is Going.

According to user reviews on amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Haisukuru-Natsuiro-Seishunhakusho-PlayStation-4/dp/B00UBSJUV6 ) the game is good.

The Guilty Gear series is named so weirdly that I'm never sure which one is the most recent, or includes the most content.

Sleeping Dogs is a great game with a title that I never could vibe with.

Apex Legends is one of the worst ones in recent memory. When it was first revealed it took me a couple days to stop forgetting the name of the damn thing.

I may just be unobservant, but I've never understood the naming convention for the Tales of Games.

For example, what does Vesperia refer to? I vaguely remember something about a guild or something. Symphonia? Xilia? I've played multiple of these games and have never picked up what they refer to.

BanG Dream Girls Band Party
Can't believe they didn't localize the title to not be what it is

Red Dead Redemption is a bit of an odd one, especially when considering what "Red Dead" originally meant.

I just realized my post made NO sense, as I thought I was in another thread. So, I removed it all.

Town adjacent to Silent Hill
Drake's Fortune, Among Thieves, Drake's Deception, Fight for Fortune, A Thief's End, Fortune Hunter, and The Lost Legacy all sound like Direct To DVD titles to me. I know the mobile games aren't considered great, but I figured I'd list 'em anyway since they continue to lame title pattern. The only one I think sounds decent is Golden Abyss.

That said, my vote goes to Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. The stupidity of the title is proportional to the amount I love that game. I want to hear the story of who came up with that one, and how much push-back they got from people who were fluent in English.

The only names that I dislike are the ones that suck with SEO. "Dislike" in a mild inconvenience kind of way. That PSX dolphin music video game Fluid (JP)/ Depth (PAL) is probably the worst offender of all time. Not that SEO mattered as much then, but I kind of SMH and remember it when I see games named, like, "Mango" today. Makes it a pain in the ass to recommend to people.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn.

Baldur's Gate is meaningless, referring to a made up city that's not in the game. If it evokes anything, its an unrelated Norse deity. Amn is another made up place. Shadows is just super cliched filler that gets chucked at far too many speculative fiction stuff.
