Platinum is very passionate about W101.

It seems so, and in a way it makes sense for a studio like PG their IPs are a very valuable asset too.

There's been a lot of speculating that they did, but no one knows for sure. Where did Platnium get the money to buy it if they have to kickstart a port? It doesn't make sense. A special arrangement was almost certainly made.

If I had to guess, Nintendo had a stake for a limited time it expried making PG the owner of the IP as Nintendo didn't care enough to keep owning it.

Define "fine" lol. 250k doesn't sound "fine" even for the Wii U.
The game sold a larger percentage of its physical shipments than it did on the Wii U and was the #1 game on the Japanese eShop for the week of its release. Given that it's an upgraded port that was expected to sell to a niche audience, that's not specifically bad, and the international physical sales figures are yet to be announced.

If there is a PC port, I'll seriously consider supporting this. Otherwise, it won't be a priority for me.

I have a hard time believing this.
And it's sort of disappointing because if they are only going to post the Kickstarter this year, we'll be waiting another 1-2 years to get the game.

This reminded me of people believing Astral Chain bombing in Japan because it didn't set the chart on fire, and later now we know it did much much better digital.
EDIT : 46k physical and about 114k digital

I'm trying to imagine wonderful101 as is having a mouse and keyboard control scheme and getting carpal tunnel just thinking about it.

Of course, that doesn't mean they shouldn't, but in the event they do , I hope that everyone is aware to definitely use a controller for the game.

Game data library lists as having 27.028 ltd. For comparison TMS is 23.806 first week with a ltd of 36.868. Bayo 2 is 33.114 first week and 48.462 ltd.

Out of all of W101 was the worst selling but the one with the best legs. I wonder what did it, maybe it was heavily discounted or something?
The Wonderful 101 sold 19.648 physical units in Japan as of January 3, 2016 (its initial shipment was 29.807 units)
Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE sold 55.387 physical units in Japan as of December 31, 2017 (its initial shipment was 54.693 units)
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water sold 60.255 physical units in Japan as of January 1, 2017 (its initial shipment was 38.909 units)
Star Fox Zero sold 77.410 physical units in Japan as of January 1, 2018 (its initial shipment was 83.536 units)
Bayonetta 2 sold 78.569 physical units in Japan as of January 1, 2017 (its initial shipment was 57.702 units)

I'll fund it for PC if I can actually keep a stable damn framerate and use the mouse to draw or switch between weapons.

Otherwise, pass. Couldn't bring myself to finish it on Wii U.

both Astral Chain and #FE "benefited" from being a more expensive game, so vouchers helped them out, digitally

To tell you the truth.

I thought this news would've been much more positive since people have wanted to be able to play this game on multiple systems lol. I get the Kickstarter concern but the bulk of the discussion is "Nintendo is making mistakes" lol

Personally I don't like the idea of making us be the financiers after we just heard that they were getting funding from Tencent.

Well I guess that's a business plan. Not remotely interested in that game again. Probably my least favorite game of theirs.

Just to emphasize how hard of a sell this game was at the time, the TW101 Direct had to periodically and bold-facedly repeat The Wonderful 101's release date throughout multiple moments in the Direct. It was one of the most bewilderingly structured Directs for a game we've ever had. They also had to cap it off with this 7 minute long trailer which, while fucking incredible, actually spoils a good chunk of the game, including the final boss.

I'm glad we got The Wonderful 101, and I adore it. Nintendo took a risk with greenlighting the game, and while it didn't pay off, there's nothing quite like it. That being said, I understand entirely why they put the IP out to pasture and respect why they let Platinum get it back. Looking back at it, it's frankly kind of insane to think a console manufacturer would provide such a large budget to a decisively niche idea, which makes me doubt in the franchise's future at all even with Platinum holding the reigns. The cynical side in me suspects that if they want the Kickstarter to inspire confidence in the IP at a grander scale, they might just walk away disappointed. Part of me hopes Nintendo or anyone else decide to hit up Platinum to make a super hero game with this kind of energy, but maybe just one that will hopefully go down better with people. After Astral Chain and (hopefully) Bayonetta 3, I suspect Nintendo at least still maintain a good relationship with Platinum and that they'll keep making games as exciting as this together in the future.

Well, to be fair, even Nintendo games that do poorly don't necessarily end up in the bargain bin. Like did it actually end up there?

Well FE was gonna be axed if Awakening didn't do well so I'm guessing that game's success is why they started to go all in on it
I bought it digitally for very cheap and physically very cheap, like both sub $15. I remember seeing it for months at Walmart for $20 bucks or so.

This is very strange but if this is the only way P* thinks it can happen then I don't blame them for trying.

That doesn't seem likely to me. Nintendo doesn't usually deal like that and Platnium never made any indication there was any time limit to their deal. Plus, Platinum and Nintendo have an on-going relationship, so they're not going to undercut each other. Whatever is happening has been mutually agreed upon.

If the Kickstarter reaches its goal, then it can't bomb because if PlatinumGames has estimated its costs correctly it will have already been 100% funded.

Uh, a game can be funded on Kickstarter and still bomb. It's not just about meeting costs to make a port; if platinum are going through all this effort to get the game to a bigger audience, they definitely will be hoping for more out of it than "can make enough money to make a likely straightforward port".

the Direct format was intended to be a joke, even going so far to direct people to Kamiya's twitter, when his antics were at its peak. spoiling the final boss doesn't matter when there's no context. especially since this was prior to the game's launch. I wouldn't say these things were a case of desperation, but rather an attempt to play up the wackiness of W101. the game is very much a saturday morning cartoon and the marketing played into that. hard to say if that was a good idea or not since the game bombed, but it made sense for what the game was

I personally think it's the most disappointing Platinum/Clover game I've played besides TMNT and that other licenced game. I prefered that Viewtiful Joe DS game or Transformers.
W101 is the textbook example on why you can't give full creative freedom to someone without checks. It's a game with some great moments buried under terrible decisions that make playing it from start to finish a chore. You will cherish the Hang-On and Space Harrier sections of Bayonetta after that. They'd need to revisit much more than the controls to make it a good experience.

You're not wrong. Of all the platinum games I've played, which is all apart from the licensed rubbish, this is by far the worst. I didn't find it fun to play at all. I actually find it shocking that Kamiya could make Bayonetta and then make TW101 straight after, such a huge downturn in quality. The only thing I liked about this was the comic book / saturday morning cartoon look.

Yeah... I never even brought myself to finish it, I just picked up basically any other "big" Platinum game and played that instead.

I'd still back it for a theoretical port without the garbage performance drops though.

I'm sure they will use some of the tencent funding on this. It's probably going to be more like blood stained to allow presales and gauge interest.

---

Even compared to other niche Wii U games that were published by Nintendo, The Wonderful 101 both had a relatively small launch shipment and a bit sellthrough percentage. The Wonderful 101 was literally the worst performing Nintendo-funded Wii U game that Media Create has tracked (we're not sure how the game compares to Devil's Third, which was sold exclusively through Amazon in Japan, so maybe TW101 is not the worst, but #2 on that list).

Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido had a similar launch shipment when you combine the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS versions, and both versions have already shown a higher sellthrough rate after only one calendar year than The Wonderful 101 did after four. In terms of gross retail revenue, Sushi Striker was less than 10 million yen (~$90.000) behind The Wonderful 101 (we're talking ~120m vs ~130m yen here), and it has most likely surpassed The Wonderful 101's gross retail revenue sometime last year. That's how bad of a job The Wonderful 101 did.

Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of data from other regions to compare. We know the game entered the charts in the UK at No.22, which is not great at all. Not even worth a mention in other sales reports, so I guess that says enough. I wish PlatinumGames a lot of good luck with their Kickstarter campaign. Just wanted to show everyone that The Wonderful 101's miserable commercial performance was not just a matter of being a Wii U exclusive; even by Wii U standards, the game was a big commercial failure.
