Doesn't look like anybody made a thread for this yet, so I figured I'd do the honors.

original

HBO's latest drama premiered on June 16, 2019. New episodes air Sundays at 9 PM CT.

Euphoria follows Rue (Zendaya), a teenage addict navigating the anxiety-ridden, substance abuse-filled life waiting for her when she gets out of rehab.

I thought the first episode was impressive. So much so that I rewatched it with some friends I recommended the series to. I picked up on a few things I missed, too, such as the character Jules (Hunter Schafer) being a trans girl played by a trans actress. At least as of the end of the pilot, Jules is a character that seems secure in her gender identity, freeing her up to grapple with other aspects of her personhood, which I find to be novel as far as trans representation goes. I'm curious to see how the trans community reacts to the character in the coming months as the show continues airing.

Anyways, I guess this can function as the show's thread, if that's aight? Apologies for the basic OP.

Saw the first episode when it came out, and it was wild. Felt like a fever dream. I'm not really into teen dramas anymore but I'm not sure this is considered one. It's extremely vulgar in the best way possible, as it makes it feel raw and feel. Can't wait for more.

It's definitely a teen drama...but it's so overwhelmingly explicit, and the writing lifts it up above a lot of what I typically see in the genre from other shows, so as to make it feel like something different.

Minus the graphic nudity it's no more explicit than Skins in terms of drug use and such.

S1-4 of Skins had writing on par/better of what I have seen from Euphoria thus far.

(What I'm saying is you should watch Skins because it's dope)

Tried to watch it with my girlfriend, but we "NOPED" out after like ten minutes. The directing looks great, and I'm sure it's not bad, but it came across as trying too hard too soon for us. Starting with 9/11 felt like something they did just to be proactive. Obviously kids were born during that time, but it felt unnecessary.

Definitely didn't strike me as trying too hard.

It was brought up to place her firmly in the generation of kids who grew up raised by paranoid parents that end up being ironically unaware of what's really going on with their children.

Now, the episode gets wild, but it really does strike me as being true to high school life. Eerily so.

Okay. Now that makes perfect sense. Didn't see it that way, but that would have an effect on the parents. Thanks for that explanation. I'll try to watch it again by myself.

Is it expected that the show will feel like a thriller for each episode? I'm interested in watching, and will probably try to watch the first episode tonight.

Nate has potential to become the most interesting character on the show. Really hope he doesn't end up hurting Jules.

So um, Nate has a lot of fucking problems huh

Also Rue's a dumbass, next time listen to Fez when he tells you to bounce lol

Tyler has potential to become the most interesting character on the show. Really hope he doesn't end up hurting Jules.

You mean Nate? Tyler's the name he's using for the app

I really enjoyed this episode the focus on Rue's and Nate this episode definitely made things interesting. This is where I was hoping they would take Nate's character and I'm glad they're going there but it's strange that both the father and son want to smash Jules. Depending on where they take him I will either find Nate's character fascinating or just despise him but good start so far.

Also, Fez is a true bro, he and Jules are the most likable people on the show. I also liked that those flashbacks with Zendaya at the beginning.

Whoops, sorry. Still early in the show and getting confused with everyone. Nate, yes.

ah yes here we go, saw the episode that aired tonight and it's messed up. from the guy breaking into the apartment to beat the shit out of that other dude to the girl seeing her sex video on pornhub and possibly deciding to become a cam girl?(based on the preview to the next episode) to the main character being given Fentanyl by a drug dealer. And these are supposed to be high school kids? shit...

guess I need to catch the first episode now

It could always end up being both of those things lol

But yea, I imagine anyone would be fucked up after finding their dad's super secret porn stash...

All good, the bit at the end where he uses the name Tyler threw me off for a bit too lol

I honestly didn't connect that Nate's dad was the one that got with Jules until they showed the two of them together. They kept showing the picture and I didn't get it.

Yes, the actress for that character has talked about the camgirl thing being her plotline this season, which could also be very interesting. Really hoping it isn't too pervy and is a relatively honest look at that whole scene.

I understood that part. Though with this episode, my initial thought was that Nate took over his dad's account and started talking with Jules in his place. Then I realized later that he actually has his own account, and also happens to have come across Jules' account on whatever app they're using (Or is it purposeful on his part?)

So basically... shit is gonna get messy

Especially since I don't see Nate being cool with a trans girl despite what he may say via anonymous app. Rue talked about what he liked in girls during that montage for a reason.

Based on Rue's narration about his life story, dude is the epitome of toxic masculinity, so yea, this won't go well.

I can't wait to see all this fuckery go down.

I'm grateful the parts that just focus on Jules and Rue are lighthearted enough, the rest of this show is just emotionally exhausting so far lol

I'll repeat myself from the June TV thread:

I'm not sure how I feel about Euporia yet, but it is such a beautifully shot show!

Yes.

And there are lots of dicks.

So many dicks.
I wasn't ready for so much in this episode

It's about time there's a show showing dicks as freely as this one. Especially considering the amount of boobs we regularly see on TV and movies. Come on, search your heart.

Oh I should've clarified, I meant like everything that had already transpired at that point, I was still stuck on the sex tapes reveal in particular lol

the soundtrack is really good in this show though

Yea it's awesome

To clarify- I have no issue with dicks. I agree that we should have nudity equality. I was just shocked at the number of dicks.

Agree. Really liked the song they played over the ending. If anyone can find a playlist of the music I'd appreciate it.

Hey, no worries! I agree it can come out as shocking since it's not something we usually see. But as far as I'm concerned, it's about time!

And yeah, the soundtrack is so good!

This show feels like it's on the wrong network. It's SKINS with an HBO budget, but the kids aren't on HBO. This shit should be on Netflix or something.

I don't know if this show is awful or not but I am highly intrigued by all the different characters and their soon to be disastrous climaxes.

So that locker rooms scene and the outrage over it does not compute, they showed all kinds of shlongs and it lasted for like a minute?

Might be a cultural thing or something

Good show overall so far
