To do a digital press conference they would still have to get tons of people together in a single location to pull it off, something companies just aren't doing right now.
yea, traditional press events (i.e. getting people together to take pictures of a console in a glass box, getting the press together in an audience to watch a couple hours of presentations) is p much off the books for now

Just do a Direct-style presentation with cuts to difference announcers, it's not rocket science.
Or they can do what they're doing? Between the Wired articles, the logo reveal, and this reveal, they are generating a ton of buzz. So far their only misstep has been the Cerny thing which really felt like a dress rehearsal or something, but that was when shit started to get real in the US, so it was probably done last minute.

they need to get gaming press playing/looking at the console, asking their own questions, getting direct interviews and quotes

a direct-style vid is not ideal for a console reveal, even when microsoft showed off the series x during the game awards they had a press event the same day with multiple interviews

Yeah, it's definitely a bit misjudged to imply that Sony should be doing a lot more than what they already are. So much of the commentary surrounding the two 'players' as of right now revolves around what they're doing in direct comparison to what the other is doing (both now and in the past) instead of what they're doing in relation to their own brands and their position within the gaming space.

What Sony seems to be doing right is now is leveraging their existing brand potential as the main 'brunt' of their marketing campaign for the PS5. Unlike Microsoft, who is very much on the offensive coming into the new generation, Sony does not need to 'muddy the waters' with much more than what they're already doing. Hell, like you said the time they've attempted that so far gave entirely needless ground to Microsoft whilst harming their brand in the moment. Their marketing strategy as of this moment is less an inherently 'unique' one, or even a particularly 'difficullt' one but more one that makes sense according to their currently favourable position within the gaming space.

Marketing, ya'll.

Conduct the interviews before-hand and embargo them, it's not complicated and has been done hundreds of times before.

The Wired article didn't generate any buzz, it's only been the social media stuff that's gone "viral". Even then, that's an inevitability given they're revealing key facts about their brand new console through random twitter posts. They'd almost certainly get the same amount of attention (maybe like 10% less, if that) if they had just gave the typical social media posts alongside the proper announcements given from a traditional reveal event. Also that tech-focused talk by Cerny was always the plan, it was originally just going to be at GDC prior to everything. Doesn't make it (or the rest of their marketing) any less baffling.

I can't be alone in thinking unveiling the key features of your brand new console through completely arbitrary social media posts (2pm on a Tuesday), or random text articles on a text website, might not be the best idea in the world? Companies do traditional reveal events for a reason, it gets attention. Even with COVID19 just do a fucking Direct-style presentation. Doing these dripfeed announcements just leads me to believe there's some internal turmoil behind the scenes and they're not ready to show off the full console, let alone actual games.

Why are we giving so much importance to social media engagement? I thought we all agreed the ESA were dumb for trying to push that onto e3?

Imagine being on the team that thinks their communication is bad lol

This isn't an example of 'good communication' but an example of communication that leverages the fuck out of the brand's pre-existing brand image/awareness.

Though, really, there is no 'good' or 'bad' communication in marketing. Using that kind of terminology simplifies things immensely by ignoring the many multi-facted contextual factors that are crucial to most marketing decisions. What is 'bad' in one context is 'good' in another, so to imply that x works always instead of x works for y is wholly misjudged.

I will say it's on the radar with a lot of the non-gamer people I know and follow on Twitter.

I don't remember the forum being this toxic with anything Playstation related before, am I wrong?

In this case I don't think it's a platform thing. More so hardcore narratives that seem embedded, in reality, don't exist outside of the hardcore discourse.

Here: That DS5 is hideous
Reality: Soon to be the most liked gaming post in instagram's history

But that's just one example.

How is that an example of anything? One ie a subjective statement and the other is a single objective metric. It makes no sense to extrapolate anything from those, especially.something as wide-reaching-yet-weirdly-specific as "this small gaming forum is fundamentally misaligned with mainstream interests."

I'm getting used to it too. Ugh. I'm still worried about a white console at launch, though.
If we're being honest with ourselves I think there are very few people here who would choose this two tone color if they had an all black option.

Even more so when it comes to the console itself. Very few people want a console sitting in their entertainment center that sticks out like a sore thumb. It's going to be really weird if Sony doesn't provide a choice at launch.

People are so fuckin thirsty for anything PS5. They could tweet out a photo of the console pack-in HDMI cable and it would do numbers.
