1. Guy is a piece of shit.
2. Said piece of shit says a lot of really nasty things, especially about wanting certain individuals to die or kill themselves.
3. That's wrong, but it's fine to openly state that you can't wait for this guy to die, or to go kill himself because of that?

if you bothered to read the thread you'd have your question answered already

First, where did anyone in the thread say he should kill himself? That would be kinda uncool, sure.

Second, disregarding the first, yeah. The two things are not morally equivalent. It isn't wrong to say the world would be better off without someone who does active harm to others through funding or promoting views that seek specifically to do said harm. It should be easy to see why wishing death on people just because they're LBGTQ is worse than wishing death on a serial killer, Hitler, or someone who promotes hate. This is especially true because I'm pretty sure that no one is promoting suicide or violence against the guy.

The guy is a piece of shit but still buying and supporting DQXI. He's not the only person that worked on the game.

The guy is a piece of shit but I'm not buying it because I feel like supporting my LGBTQ brothers and sisters is more important than supporting a video game and the rest of the team that worked on it.

Fuck it, I'm going all in.
You run a company making toys for pre-schooler children. They are popular and sales are good. One of your lead artists has gotten very successful and is now using his fame and fortune to lobby for the decriminalization of child pornography. He goes on talk shows telling people how age is just a number. He puts out print ads pointing to bullock studies on how the age of maturity in children is getting lower. Your customers are very concerned about this. They ask you why you are still doing business with this man. You have an entire team working passionately on producing the new line of toys. None of them are pedophiles. Do you say "his opinions don't represent the company's opinion, please separate the artist from the art" or do you stop doing business with him? Tell me.
Sorry OP, your response got buried with other responses and I fell asleep! When I woke up there was a lot of immature responses I had to go through and couldn't answer but now I found your comment! thanks for taking the time to write that. However, I don't think many people even knew about this? The video is like 8 months old isn't it? Feels like this person's efforts are being wasted since not a lot of people even knew, kinda feels like old man yelling at cloud situation - however if I was in charge of the company, I would fire him for sure. But this situation got out of control since I never even argued that. I also never defended the guy nor his politics, I agree people should try and get media's attention or ask Square what is up with that guy (although if I am not mistaken he goes a long way back with squeenix so I doubt they would do something, they are quite old fashioned after all), all I literally wanted to say in the first place was "don't skip on DQ XI"

I was thinking of getting the game through a CD Key reseller on steam.

Could a situation happen where Square-Enix refused to pay extra-royalties to export the orchestral music to the west and the arranged synthesized music isn't beholden (Sugiyama doesn't arrange his own music as far as I know) to him ? I think that was a situation that was left up to interpretation when it came to Nintendo publishing DQ7 & 8 to the west, yes ?

Your money will only go to cdkeys then, obv they already paid for the keys out of their own pocket so S-E still sees cash for it. idk if that distinction matters to you.

To be fair, the music has always been my least favorite part of the DW/DQ games, but that's mostly because I've only played the versions with shitty MIDI. Still, even at his best he doesn't hold a candle to Mitsuda, Uematsu, Shimomura, & Sakuraba. He relies too heavily on similar sounds and themes.

I mean I really like the music but my issue is I'm gay and how do i support the game when this guy is profiting from my purchase knowing his views. I can't imagine not playing DQ11 but does that make me some kind of traitor hypocrite etc?

I'm not going to "pre-order" the key so they don't have to adjust their stock based on my purchase, but I'm probably getting it on the day of release if they still have it on stock. Anything second-hand seems fine.

That's not really what I was talking about, I was illustrating why money/influence matters when you're talking about bigotry. We'd take all the bigots to task if we could, but since that isn't possible you focus on the big picture. And people like Trump have a massive effect on the climate of the nation they occur in. I don't think it's possible to argue against that.

If Trump influences you, you already had weak values to begin with. Some people's morals are made of sticks and feathers, people like Trump puff on them and the charade falls apart.

When Trump's gone there's going to be more like him, obviously. He proved you can have a successful political career being a piece of shit. Even if you do take the bigots to task, so what? What changes? If trump is impeached there's still millions of bigot voters out there that could vote for the next Trump. Even if a democrat succeeds him afterwards... there's still millions of racist voters out there that could vote for the next Trump in 4 years, in 8 years, in 12 years, in 16 years, and so on. We're always going to have the anxiety of that risk because we have a large section of the population that are literally cultural filth.

Yeah, fuck Sugiyama. Dude is a great composer but a trash human being and the sooner the DQ franchise is rid of him the better.

No, it doesn't, in the same way that eating at Chic-fil-A doesn't make you a traitor or hypocrite. Just do what makes you happy, that's how we win.

Well said. The only way to prevent it is to enfranchise good Americans by establishing more voting rights and eliminating gerrymandering.

I don't know if it's sarcasm but yes, the video is from November 2017 and went unnoticed, as it should have been imo

No it was not sarcasm, i know that guy was pretty heavy on political thing and sometwhat racism, but this is pretty weird this never came out before.... what he say in the video are something that would totally never pass for the rest of the world...

I love the rich musical history of DQ but wow what a piece of garbage. So many older folks are this way all over the planet and it is hard for them to see differently and it breaks my heart how much they have hardened their hearts.

In Japan, are his opinions generally shared by those of his generation (he's 87)? Genuinely curious, not trying to make excuses. This stuff hurts to read/hear as a DQ fan.

It sorta sounds like you're saying that we shouldn't combat bigotry because bigotry is inevitable, and people will always be able to be swayed.

If that's what you think I don't have a lot left to say. Political and social change is not accomplished by inaction and quietly accepting the big guys continuing to exert their influence.

Anyone boycotting DQ because of this scumbag is dumb. As if the 1 man means all the other people that worked hard on the game deserve to be shit on. This dude can rot but don't let his garbage beliefs lead to you lumping all the DQ devs with him.

I love Dragon Quest (8 is one of my all time favorite games) but ever since I found out about sugiyama's views, my enjoyment of the games music as somewhat diminished. I mean fuck, the music of DQ is so happy jolly and the theme song is one of the most iconic video game songs of all time. It's really frustrating that such wonderful music is made by such an awful man.

I am of the opinion that despite Sugiyama's iconic music, he is a stain on the series and needs to go.

But Square-Enix not firing his dumb ass is enabling his views, in that sense I think it's totally reasonable to boycott the game and sent a message to SE that this shit isn't ok, and this guy should be fired/retired.

Of course I know SE won't do shit. I mean, the Kenshin author already got a new job too, right?...

I don't feel like there's anything wrong with sitting out on a game release because there's problematical people involved or profiting.

People are free to boycott and speak with their dollars if they want. I didn't purchase Shadow Complex because of it's association with Orson Scott Card. I knew full well that the game was made by dozens of people who don't share his views. No one is lumping all the DQ staff with this guy. But if they lose some sales because of this guy, that is a consequence of this guy's actions and beliefs, not a the people boycotting.

I've always thought that the best way of dealing with bigots and racists was not giving these people the time of day
Leaving them alone just allows them to gather with their like-minded peers and fester until they get even worse.

EDIT: Case in point, these people get to openly hyuk it up on TV, which only allows for their message to reach new people.

What exactly do you want? Isn't that interview something they put out themselves? That's back into the spotlight because of an article the woman in it wrote?

We aren't dragging their racist views out here, this is them using their platforms to spread it.

Are you actually saying the best way to combat that is to not say anything whilst they promote their message?

Tell that to all the LGTBI people that keeps suffering while we go all "we should just ignore it". How easy to say...

While we sit comfortable doing nothing these people are on TV spreading their hatred and gaining money to even further spread their message. How is that the best method of action?

I mean it's basic history at this point, do you think all of our advancements as a society were done by inaction?

If you really want to take away Sugiyama's platform, the way to do that is not buy his game and let SE/press/everyone know why. Trying to bury what he's doing changes literally nothing.
