Exact same thing! I'm glad you understand and this is not a dumb ass comparison at all.

It suggests that popularity is no indicator of quality which is 100% correct.

FF13 killed the franchise. Some people might like what it has become with that game and 15, but those people are not the same as those who would enjoy the earlier entries.

LOL

Every game starting from VII killed the franchise according to some people.

And if you truly believe this I'm sure making a FFXVI that's more fitting to your tastes is a better option than remaking XIII on the vague hope it will be better the second time around.

We know they will at least reach FF27

The series is long past the point where others would have dropped the numbering to the point where it's sort of become part of the series identity. I mean the most popular Final Fantasy game is Final Fantasy 7. They didn't even start releasing these games in Europe before that, so people's first taste of the series over here was the 7th instalment. Can't really think of any other franchise where that's the case.

To look at it another way, Apple and Samsung seam completely fine with sticking numbers on their flagship phones despite the fact that they're already past the tenth instalment - Samsung even jumped all the way from 10 to 20 recently for seemingly no reason.

Also, numbered titles can sometimes sound a bit weird when you're not used to them being said, but once they start being used they suddenly become pretty natural. I remember when "PS4" sounded a bit weird when the PS3 was still current, and the PS5 when the PS4 was current. I'm sure a similar thing will happen for the PS6, which currently sounds a bit weird to say as well. And in the same way, "Final Fantasy 17" or "Final Fantasy 21" currently sound a bit weird, but if they eventually get to that number it will probably sound much more natural by then.

Why would they? It's working well as-is. They've continued to sell even after a [gameplay] reboot or 5. Why change the name if it's already working well?

Nah...it's one of the most valuable video game IP and well known in its differences of each entry even in abbreviation.

Final Fantasy XXX (assuming we get to that point at Square's current rate) will be called Final Fantasy 30, just like Super Bowl 50 wasn't called Super Bowl L.

Otherwise, I think they'll keep the numbers.

No, and it's because the reasons why game series drop their number don't apply to Final Fantasy. This is a series that has run for decades and anyone familiar with it already knows that there are a lot of games and that they're all unrelated. The same thing goes for the Dragon Quest games - there's no reason to drop the numbering there either.

Given that it seems like the bulk of their time is going to be spent on remaking FF7 for at least another decade and it's hard to say if 16 will show up during or after that point, I'm not exactly worried that the game numbering is going to get unnecessarily "large" for them. They'll probably want to make "FFXX" a big deal and beyond that, I think full numbered entries are rare enough that I don't feel a big need to change. Either way I don't expect the roman numerals to change at least until 29, who knows how they'll feel about having "XXX" right in the title name.

I could see them dropping the numbers someday and opting for subtitled names instead.
Something like "Final Fantasy: Lightning Returns"

wait a minute...

I think it does need a reboot in terms of tone and art style. The franchise has progressively leaned harder into the anime teen idol aesthetic, which has an audience I guess, but it's lost on me.

Like, imagine an actual game that adhered more closely to Amano's art style on next gen consoles.

If they went back to the drawing board and did an imaginative take on some of the original Final Fantasy archetypes I think it would be a breath of fresh air.

Probably could rename it? Final Fantasy Next or something like that. Then if the rebranding bombs they can always go back to hype up the original count.

I would prefer they went the subtitle route.

Final Fantasy: Dudebro's Got a Tail
Final Fantasy: Amnesia is a Bitch
Final Fantasy: Daddy Issues
Final Fantasy: Sister Issues

It's really about time they just go with the "Title: Subtitle" format.

Final Fantasy 19 sounds like a tired old game series.

Final Fantasy: Cadenza Excretia sounds new and interesting.

lol nobody reads the OP.

I decided to enlarge the font. see if that works.
it doesn't really change anything

like, some day down the line they'll just make another 'final fantasy'? as if they're ever going to stop re-releasing the original and they wouldn't at some point be sold alongside each other? a 'reboot' doesn't make sense, when all it would do is cause even more confusion

as before, what is there to reboot when there's no legacy it'd be falling back on

16 is already comically high for a numbered game. If they aren't going to do it now, they never will.

I have no issue with large numbers, it's better for everyone when it's easy to clearly identify an episode.

Going the subtitle way would be okay as well even if more confusing than a distinct number for the average buyer.

I don't think they'll stop using the numbers.

I think that, simply, at some point, Final Fantasy will end. And there won't be anymore games.

It's not like XXX is only associated with pornography and considering the context it's pretty obvious it's not pornography. Not to mention that it'd be pronounced thirty.

But if they do reboot the numbering I hope they also just change the name to be "The Final Fantasy".

I think the understanding that the numbered entries don't have continuity is widespread enough that it isn't necessary plus there's a prestige around 'numbered' FF games that is acknowledged even by SE and which separates them from 'just' FF games with a subtitle or whatever.

Not in our lifetimes.

Mainline games are so far apart I don't think there's any meaningful way to predict this. They might not reach XX for 30-40 years, maybe even longer. Who knows what video game trends will be then? What does a 50 year old video game franchise even look like?

My inclination is that they'll stop making Final Fantasy before they reboot the numbers - but that's something for my grandkids to find out.

This thread sure shows who bothers to read the OP, huh.

And I don't think they will. The brand is so strong that I think only a lull in sales will see them re-boot the name a bit, rather than just hitting a big number. I don't think they'll really care what number it hits as long as it keeps selling. And I won't care as long as they're still fun!

Probably, which is fine. As long as they don't start messing around with Nomura's ridiculous naming conventions.

I was wondering why there was a poll that had nothing to do with the thread title. Then I noticed people don't even read a one line OP. Crazy.

but yeah, op you probably should have worded the title better. I think the series will end or completely change before they change up the numbering system.
