Give me AAA or give me death.
Hades has been giving me a lot of the latter lately

Pathologic 2 and Outer Wilds cracked my Top 5 of the decade. Hell no I don't avoid them. I like great games.

I treat them the same as any other title. I dont play what I dont like or because I'm tired of a genre being beaten to death (shoutout to the multiple metroid clones in OP). That's regardless of accolades from folks who are already into those types of experiences.

Is that hard to understand?

I don't care if they're acclaimed, I play the indies I have eyes on.

And I kind of follow indies probably more than 1st or 3rd party.

I don't avoid indies. The only games that I pass on are those with 'rogue-lite' and 'procedurally generated' in their description. I straight up hate that kind of game design.

I don't actively avoid them, it's just that I've never seen an indie game that looked appealing to me.

Never? That's pretty wild given the diversity of aesthetics and genres.

I'm the opposite in that I feel as if an AAA game has to do something extremely special to grab my attention. Half-Life: Alyx is one of my all-times favorites, I like the big Nintendo stuff and Sekiro was incredible, but I'm unsure if those are even defined as "AAA" anymore.

Don't even bother with Ubisoft / EA outside of Respawn because I know I'll boot it up, see the mess of a menu and my eyes will glaze over.

I ❤️ indies.

If anything I'm actively looking for them these days.

I really wonder why one should avoid games made by an independent studio ?

Production value and visuals can be very high/good best example should be Control by Remedy. Don't get the OP really.

Yeah, indie games are basically like generic Ubisoft open world games - I find them completely unappealing.

Gonna be honest--I don't like 2D games. And it seems like most of them are platformers, rogue like, survival, metroidvania, etc.

Think the last indie I loved with Rocket League and it's no longer indie. I just want more studios to make fun pick up and play games, ones that prioritize fun over everything else (think Tony Hawk).

Yep I absolutely avoid indie games.

I can count on less than a handful of fingers the indie games I've actually enjoyed over the past decade.

The worst is 2D games. It's an instant discard for me. 2D is a relic of past technological limitations and as far as I'm concerned the only reason indie games use it is because of limited resources and inability to make a decent looking 3D game.

Why would I waste my time settling for these when I already have so many well made AAA games to play?

I don't know if people are being serious with the 'do people really avoid indie' titles stuff in here, but yes lol, a lot of people do. I have a friend, for instance, that any time I recommend an indie title he looks at screenshots and just kind of dismisses it as one of those 'small, cheap' games. Outside one other person, everyone else I know who plays games don't play indies at all. So yeah, there's definitely people who avoid or outright ignore smaller games for sure.

Indies are the best, they focus on being great videogames instead of being playable depressing movies.

I would give up AAA gaming if gun pointed to my head I couldn't do both.

I buy and play a bunch of indies, but I know plenty of people that won't touch them unless they're free. "They're not real games" is a common shitbird statement that I see/hear.

I don't avoid them but I also don't know many who are truly excellent I'm sure there's plenty. Undertale was defenitly not for me it's was truly mediocre. Stasdew Valley wasn't really my cup of tea and now I'm playing Cross Code which is gameplay wise very good but the story is so far really simple and not really there. Finished the second temple in that game and I'll most likely play it to completion.

I'm waiting for Hades to come out on Playstation it really seems like right up my alley. Any solid rpg or jrpg that are indie that I might have slept on ? Oh and C'thulu save the world was pretty good and Cosmic Star Heroine was a gem.

Indies are what I mostly play from western developers these days with a few exceptions. Which isn't too surprising since I got into gaming during the 80's and 90's on Nintendo consoles. So things with small budgets, tight scope, and drawing a lot of inspiration from titles of those eras were always going have my attention.

Yes.

Too mainstream for me. I mean, if they have won awards, are they really indie?

Thankfully I never avoided them, I have taken from them far more than from any AAA game recently. I mean just look at Kentucky Route Zero, Outer Wilds, Sayonara Wild Hearts, What Remais of Edith Finch, etc. This is what I'm mostly looking for.

How many indie games you tried?

Indies can go from Hellblade (at the time) to Spelunky.

Let's be honest while games like Hellblade and Control (and even Spiderman) might technically be indies, most people aren't really considering them in that bracket.

I think anyone trying to push that angle is just being disingenuous in these discussions.

Control and Spider-Man were published by big companies (505 and Sony), Hellblade was self-published.

That's what makes a "indie".

Again, "indie" in this context is a loaded word that means much more than the literal interpretation of "from a studio that is independent of a larger company".

No matter the definition you use (budget, graphic style, camera view...) there's still a lot of variety.

You mentioned 2D, but the examples on the OP includes first person, third person, isometric and side scrollers.

I play a lot of indie games but usually wait a while before getting to them and don't play them until they're part of a bundle or offered free. Wilmot's Warehouse is probably the best game I've played all year and I never would have played it if Epic didn't give it away for free.

Indie games almost make the industry for me these days.
So the question seems almost crazy to me.

BUT, I've seen enough people dismiss amazing games, simply because they are tagged as "Indy", to be sympathetic. :P

Hell no. I approach them the exact same way as triple blaargh games these days - if they pique my interest, I will make an effort to play them myself.

Perhaps the only difference is that I do not expect 50+ hours from an indie most of the time, whereas big studio releases sort of bank on it.

Honestly I get bored of them easily or something. I also hate rogue likes which a lot of them seem to be. I loved Transistor, loved Velocity 2X but didn't finish it because I got bored, hated Rogue Legacy, enjoyed Binding of Isaac for a couple hours, enjoyed Gone Home, loved the Bloodstained games, Dust was ok, and liked Steamworld Dig. I never liked them enough to play through them more than once though.

i avoided indie games until the 360 when they became big as arcade games.

i played hacked roms and small games from friends but that was it. now, indie games are somewhat better than some big games from AAA-studios.

No, definitely not. But I have a pretty good idea of what will and won't connect with me, so I just pass on some games even if they have a wide critical/consumer consensus.

Indie games can take huge risks and try experimental and weird ideas that AAA games usually can't afford. Obviously many of those ideas end up not working or simply being boring but that's totally okay, there are still more gems out there than I have time to play.

I don't really distinguish. Games are games. Sometimes I want a big AAA adventure, sometimes I want a smaller experience.

I don't actively avoid any game, even games in genres I don't typically enjoy can still be fun for me.

This is it for me. 90% of my gaming diet is indie because they are cheaper, take up less of my time, and often have a personal touch missing in AAA extravaganzas. I can handle bugs and lower budget projects, it's not that big of a deal.

Never avoid indies, i'm select on which ones i wish to play. But this is on personal preference. The last one i've played was Spiritfarer, and that was brilliant. Got Raji to play next, it's currently downloading.

Some of my favourite games over the last decade come from smaller, independent companies. Games such as

Journey
Flower
Abzu
Dead Cells
Binding of Isaac
Snake Pass
Hollow Knight
Velocity 2X
Evergate
Fez
Gone Home
Guns, Gore and Cannoli
Miles and Kilo
Ding Dong
Cycle 28

Just to name a few

I avoid many critically acclaimed games which won many awards. Nothing specific to indie games really.

They don't usually scratch an itch I like is all.

Everyone has their preferred "production values" it seems. Some prefer the bells and whistles of AAA. Some prefer the freedom offered by indies. I myself prefer AA as they hit the perfect spot (for me) of having some creative freedom without many of the technical limitations of indies.
