I don't know a single person in real life who didn't fully comprehend that it was 1400 on top of the 600 for a total of 2K. If the backlash is only coming from social media and niche forums, I think the dems will be just fine considering their competition is dealing with being complicit in a coup attempt.

Biden said $2000 checks out the door. Not "$1400 + the $600 you already got." People are suffering and deserve the $2000.
after the $600 they continued to talk about $2000 checks. a $2000 check generally refers to a check for $2000
The issue with the messaging with that they kept $2,000 checks figure messaging well after it should have been changed. It was a fight to change the $600 check amount to $2,000 originally but once checks started going out it should have changed changed to $1,400 checks. Some might have made it clear but too many said $2,000 checks when they should not have at the time.
Republicans lost Georgia in the runoffs, handing Dems the senate. That was the backlash.
Why are people defending this? They said 2K in an ambiguous way that made people think they would get a full 2K on top of the 600 bucks. They should deliver on that promise.
Not from Georgia, but also same.
I'm actually surprised people in this thread haven't seen the sentiment in one way or another.
