feels wild that hollywood can make a super good franchise out of the planet of the apes but making dinos fun is just impossible
Funny thing is the virus plotline in the Apes movies is an easy template for making InGen's meddling a global threat without millions of dinosaurs just spawning into existence between films or having… giant locusts. Literally have the mosquito samples be tainted with ancient viral strains that modern life has no immunities to, but dinos do.

From Jeff Snieder's report on why Leitch fell through:

Further info from THR:

"There's not enough time to work with new ideas," one source told us of the film, which has a script by David Koepp and an ambitious July 2, 2025 release date. According to another source, the producers have already done some dino design work and soft prep on the movie.

But we can see why the film was attractive for someone like Leitch in the first place. It was going to lean into action territory (one source described it as having an Escape from New York vibe, but a Universal insider said that was not true. Well, what about the idea of weaponized dinosaurs? The insider said no.)

It's possible the 'Escape from New York' bit is true, but that's just subjective and the other insider doesn't see it that way.

Time to get David Lynch.

Black and white. A raptor sits alone in a bar at night. Slow blues music plays. A giant serves him a whisky tonic.

A woman approaches the raptor and whispers in his ear.

WOMAN
The tyrannosaur walks alone at night.

The raptor blinks. There's a slow rhythmic thud and we see concentric circles appear in the drink.

A close up of woodworm eating the bar surface. Static swells.

I was going to say that the only director who can fix this kind of franchise was Matt Reeves and he is busy (not taking anything away from Rupert Wyatt).

Escape from New York but with dinosaurs has the potential to be a kickass movie but it could also be Jurassic Park 3. You need a direction with action chops and some flair to deliver this. Just a hired gun won't do.

Universal is probably banking on it to be a primary revenue generator that quarter, and Jurassic growing into more of a multimedia franchise probably means they have planned tie-ins already in motion.

I know he wants Star Wars, but dude would absolutely *nail* Jurassic in a way that hasn't been done since the original. Minus One had the exact right sensibilities.

i really don't think direction is the issue with this franchise. to your earlier point, universal seems to have already decided how this one's gonna go creatively.

JA bayona is a great director and fallen kingdom had some genuinely good action sequences. didn't stop the movie sucking
