It can be changed in the full game. For whatever reason it is locked this way for the demo.

I'll never be able to wrap my mind around why people love this game so much. I get most people don't, it's mainly a hardcore, vocal minority on the internet. But still. It's dark, drab, kind of ugly, awkward, slow, clunky, and...not fun? Definitely not appealing in a visual or control sense. Skeletons with shields? Not the most original concept either. I guess it gets so much love in places like this exclusively cause it's..hard? Sure, but that doesn't make it any good. I didn't notice even one vaguely impressive thing about it.
Millions of people buy McDonald's everyday, doesn't mean it's good.
So the thousands of extremely positive reviews, many of which are from jaded videogame reviewers who have played literally everything and are hard to impress, who explicitly state what they loved about the game in great detail, are all "disconnected from reality", while threads like this are the "real story".
Got it.
Opinions are fine. What isn't fine is shitting on everything positive, pretending it's all "fake news", and then putting a massive amount of weight on a small minority of people who didn't like the game as "real". I mean..come the fuck on. What compels you to do that? Why is this thread the "reality", and the fact that SMO has sold like 15,000,000 copies and is one of the best rated games of all time NOT the reality? Who is disconnected from what?
So you haven't played a second of the game, yet you felt the need to come in and post about how you didn't like it, how "stupid" the hat mechanic is, and how "boring" and "uninspired" it is. And that you'd prefer a port of an existing Mario game instead of a brand new one, without even trying it. Brilliant. And edgy!
Uh, sure, If you say so. For me, it's one of the most memorable games I've played in my life, and that will stay with me a long, long time. ut sure, feel free to speak for everyone who's played it.
This is exactly the goal and point of the OP. There's no other rational reason he would create such a thread, considering there's mountains upon mountains of positive opinions of the game online which explicitly explain what they loved about the game. And even if there wasn't, if one actually plays it, it's really not that hard to see why people would love it, regardless of whether if their cup of tea.
Just because you repeat the same word 3X in a row, doesnt make it any closer to being true. I'll never understand the confidence at which so many hear shit on a game in the face of such evidence to the contrary, instead of maybe stepping back and thinking maybe it's you just irrationally wanted it to be something it wasn't, and that's on you, not on the game. Why can't you say "it wasn't my type of game", instead of "weak, weak, weak" and "nothing"?
I've never felt the need to create such a thread for a game I didn't like, and never understood it.
Since you seem interested in the Metroidvania aspects of Dark Souls, be aware that exploration is not the game focus. The DS world shows a fascinating interconnect-ness, but the areas themselves are de-facto stand-alone "levels". The game basically ask you to perfect a level before moving to the next one.I was interested in Dark Souls to begin with because of its reputation for strong exploratory 3D world design (something to fill the void left by Metroid Prime) and its outsized influence on the progression structure of more recent games I admire tremendously. That hasn't changed, and I've kept in mind the warnings in this thread that it doesn't demo well, and that the introductory experience in the real game is supposedly smoother. I'm well aware that I've barely seen the game and am in no place to form a fair impression, and I wish I had a few more hours to dig into it today and see if it clicked. I can already see a hint of why the progression might be highly satisfying over a long stretch.
Still, I think I may put this on the back burner. I'm weighing Dark Souls against two other last-generation ports that release within a week of it (TWEWY and Valkyria 1) and I think one of those will have to take priority. Might even play Salt and Sanctuary first, as I'm more comfortable in 2D, although that lacks the thing that interested me in Dark Souls in the first place, the 3D world layout. The port quality seems acceptable to me as a neophyte, though; no performance issues, and it looks fine to me on the small screen, though enemy health bars are a little hard to make out.
Whoa, you preemptively answered my follow-up question. :-OI don't have the full game. And, no, I'm not going to lift that for you.
Indeed. I asked about it and was told it can be changed. Hopefully the rep that told me didn't give me poor information.Good to know. As a network test demo I can understand if we were provided a UI from a different build, but this was enough of a concern that one really does have to be sure this was not final.
Don't have the full game, yet.
It's possible to one hit kill it with certain characters.Dat armored Boar near the start... if you don't have a Lightning Spear, mofo is pretty intimidating to take on
i turned the console off between the japanese and euro tests, with no impact on performance whatsoever, the performance its just messy. somebody earlier mentioned that's maybe because it has so many messages and bloodstains in such a condensed area. That i can believe, but anyway its a shame this "demo" turned me off on buying it, unless i read reviews and see enough footage showing improvements

From the ledge above, throw an alluring skull below to bait it over. Then drop down and attack while it's under you.
Nope. I might be out.
Just wondering, is this your first time playing DS?
So in the EU it is possible to play now! I'm having a go as we speak. I think it's due to the Japan servers being live?
Hmm it feels like something is off
I played every release of DS (ps3, 360, pc, ps4, pc remaster) and this feels different. Feels like some sort of input lag (only played docked)
Tip: adjust the in-game brightness settings (not the system level brightness).
Speaking as someone who has a passing interest in Dark Souls, I tried the demo today for about 30 minutes and promptly deleted it shortly after.
I'm sure this is more the fault of the demo, but there's no story exposition; you're just thrust in this world with a weapon and a shield. No explanation of how to play. I saw the comical "YOU DIED" over and over again and then I tapped out.
There was perhaps a 30% chance I'd buy this game, but after playing the demo I realized this is a) exactly what I thought it would be (crushing difficulty, opaque systems), and b) just not for me.
To all the fans of this series, this is not a troll post; I'm just expressing my opinion, if you love the game, that's great!
This was me but I have it another chance and now like it quite a bit.Speaking as someone who has a passing interest in Dark Souls, I tried the demo today for about 30 minutes and promptly deleted it shortly after.

You won't get that up front in the full game either. Doesn't sound like the game for youI'm sure this is more the fault of the demo, but there's no story exposition;

One thing I would say about this network test to first time players is that (if its the same as the ps4 test) it is not really a good demo of the game for a new player. It drops you into the deep end in an awkward area without letting you play the tutorial and it would be pretty easy to have no idea what to do and get frustrated but the full game does ease you in a lot better.

Yo that was me. I found using the dark night guy (think he's called that?) makes it much easier and also summoning another player really helps.Hey everyone, I appreciate the replies. I grew up with NES games so I'm sorta used to brutal difficulty and things not being explained. I didn't really have that mindset when I fired up the network test (not "demo", thanks for the correction).
Maybe I'll give it another shot since at least one of you expressed the same feelings but then went ahead and kept playing only to find that they enjoyed it.
Where is the door that one of the keys does work on?
You know, I kind of expected to dislike the game. It keeps kicking my teeth in, and yet, I kept jumping right back in and trying again. I dig the atmosphere, as drab and macabre as it is, and the weighty feel of the combat.
That's not to say I don't have my criticisms though... I'm not too crazy about how when I take damage, it's not always obvious via a reaction by my character. I wouldn't know sometimes unless I see my life bar depleting. That leads to a lot of deaths that feel kind of cheap. It's also kind of frustrating that any/every action feels like you get punished for it (via stamina depletion). They let you defend with L, but blocking an attack takes stamina. You can dodge, but it's slow as hell and also drains stamina. I don't know if levels or equipment alleviate that down the line, but it feels egregious in the demo (as a newcomer).
1. Whether or not it's "drab and ugly" is totally subjective. Dunno if it's obvious from the Network Test, but every inch of this world oozes artistry and care. I really appreciate the architecture and use of color for every individual area, anyway.I'll never be able to wrap my mind around why people love this game so much. And I quote, from the "I don't understand the love for Mario Odyssey" thread:
Like, are you just being a blatant hypocrite on purpose? Everything you've said to defend SMO could apply to Dark Souls.
Is firelink in the network test?Once you make your first loop from Firelink to Undead Parish and then back to Firelink, it's such a cool moment. Then the game opens up and you realize how multi-layered the levels are, how many different paths you can take. So good! Its quality has nothing to do with the game being hard. It's generally not hard at all as long as you pay attention. The bosses follow a Megaman-like pattern recognition template, so sometimes you get it on your first run, sometimes it takes practice. Nothing extraordinarily difficult here apart from bosses not being designed to be beaten in one go. Dark Souls is great because of how well-designed its world is (at least up until 2/3rds in). The network test conveys none of that. Maybe that's why it's referred to as a network test and not a demo.
I'm totally okay with the frame rate issues and audio problems, but what I'm NOT okay with is the swapped A and B buttons. WTF. I can see the logic for doing this in combat, but in the menus?
200,000 becomes 1,000,000 with repeat sales coming from a small minority of people. Are you saying people don't buy this game multiple times? I've seen people admit this hundreds of times on this very forum. And the people most excited about the Switch release are those who have already owned it.
I've purchased BotW 37 times. 12 on Wii U, and 25 on Switch since it came out. It's a game I strongly believe everyone should experience, so I've offered to buy it to anyone I knew who owned a Wii U or Switch. No regrets.
