Ooh, this is a thread I'll need to keep an eye on. Glad to see that "Lonesome Digger" got posted.

Hopefully I'll see the video for a song I've been trying to find for a while now. I came across it in a thread here or on GAF years ago and can't even remember the genre of music it was anymore. All I remember is that it was a rubber-hose/Cuphead animation style and it involved the Sun as a character I think, and maybe someone floating down a river (maybe a jungle river?). Either the musician had several videos in that style, or the person who animated it had done several for different people. That's all I can recall about it but there is a chance it might pop up in here.

Lots of great suggestions and many I had not seen before. Love it.

That was very sweet. Gave me the same kind of vibes as Makoto Shinkai's movies.

Wonderful thread idea. I'm going to be soaking up the posts.

I am a sucker for that simple 80's anime style. Great pick.

Holy shit. That started out rather predictable and then it went full on Berserk. Very nice animation and a good somg. And wholly disturbing.

This thread would be inexcusably incomplete without Caravan Palace's Lone Digger

This one is very cool. My 6 year old daughter randomly found it one day and loves it, but isn't allowed to watch it...

The film clip for Meg Myers's cover of "Running up that hill" was hand coloured by over 2000 kids, it's really cool. There is a warning for people with conditions triggered by flashing lights/colours.

So, what are everyone's favourite examples of animated music videos? To not have the thread clogged up with (some admittedly great) AMVs, the criteria is that the animation was created to accompany the music. Fan edits of Evangelion scenes with Rammstein or Pet Shop Boys music are not admissible while something like AHA's "Take on Me" video would totally be admissible.

I will start out with two of my favourite examples.

Starlight Brigade

With music by Dan Avidan/TWRP and animation done by the studio Knights of the Light Table, this video tells a straightforward tale of a young hero who leaves home to battle an intergalactic evil that blocks out the stars. The animation is gorgeous with character designs heavily inspired by Studio Ghibli. This video will make you despair that there isn't a whole series based on this concept. Visuals and lyrics accompany each other beautifully with the song literally telling the story we are watching. The cast are Personally the music is not something I normally would listen to, but it is actually hightened by how well it fits with the animation. The end product is pretty much perfect.

Bonus info: The other members of the Brigade are animated representations of the band members.

Starship Velociraptor

With music by metal-head Jonathan Young and animation by the studio Volta this is a very strange and mesmerising video. Is there a story? Stories maybe? Yes and no. This can best be described as a fast-paced series of commercials for prospective buyers of the product "Starship Velociraptor" - all having the same bewildered protagonist thrust into various scenarios. Some original, some inspired by classics such as Akira or Galaxy Express. The animation is like a series of set pieces from series finales where the animation director blows the remainder of the budget on his favourite scene. The weirdness and high production values at times is reminiscent of FLCL while the style is clearly inspired by anime without having that jarring "westerners trying to do anime but it looks like westerners trying to do anime" look. It's totally bananas and thrilling. The song, while not following the visuals as literally as Starlight Brigade, fits very well with the visuals and sells the tempo and action on display.

Bonus: If you like Starship Velociraptor, Volta and Jonathan Young also teamed up for the slightly less weird but still wonderful 10,000 Light Years. Well worth a watch.

It's only like a third animated and half of it is pixel art, but kinda counts. Just supporting a women-and-minority-only pop punk band.

Sounds like a Mcbaise joint. Someone posted Water Slide earlier, but my favorite is "She's a Big Boy." Might be what you're thinking of.

The comments for this one are iirc full of people saying they stumbled upon it as kids and it freaked them out, but this came out when I was 17 and others around me were getting into sex and relationships and I had some anxiety over it so the subtext immediately clicked with me.

Also, I feel like people don't talk enough about how good the song itself is. "I've sent my heart away, like heroes in the rain" regularly gets stuck in my head.

Genuinely surprised that Sledgehammer hasn't come up yet as it's a pioneer of animated music videos.

Wait, am I misreading this thread or why has nobody posted any Daft Punk videos yet?

Their older videos were all following a connected animated storyline.

Not misreading and Interstella 555 has been brought up several times. Or rather, it's so good that many people have said it would be akin to cheating to use it as an example because it wins by default :-D

They (and you!) are quite right. Interstella 555 is tremendous. And quite unique. A series of music videos that are meant to be seen in order and comprise a single well-told story. And if you're a Galaxy Express fan, it's just pure candy.
