OP, are you from US?
The problem with swearing is pretty much exclusive to the USA, pretty much nobody else gives a damn.
Boyyyyy
OP, are you from US?

People have different life experiences? Impossible!People are like "people swear all the time."
So you peeps be sitting there saying things like
- "I've got news as big as my balls,"
-"I'm cleaner than a cunt at a convent."
-"Pull some pants on you ass and get down here."
You're not gonna convince me that this is how some of you people talk lol.
I laughed at this. Thank you.TIL: Thugs and criminals should have clean and proper language at all times.
We have comically massive threads where judge trailers all the time that maybe edge out 2 minutes. And yet 48 minutes doesn't set a tone for CDPR's work? That's longer than an episode of most TV shows. Or can you not judge a show's writing unless you watch every season?
Am I not allowed to judge the writing in the first 5 hours of Final Fantasy XIII because fuck if I was going to put up with any more of that shit? What if someone posts a comically bad Resident Evil cutscene? Are people expected to not have a reaction?
CDPR chose to highlight this aspect of their game. People are going to respond to it.
Ok, but can they actually hire people who are comfortable swearing then? Because in addition to the dialogue not being the best here, the voice acting fills incredibly stilted.
I think the opposite, that there's too many self righteous, pretentious young people on here that think they can tone police and shame others for their completely normal acceptable ways of speaking. See also threads about drinking and watching sports.
That Blade Runner thing will be in there too, to some extent. My guess? The gameplay demo serves to showcase how CP77 differs from what the mainstream audience usually thinks of when they think of cyberpunk.I'm with the OP on this as I have explained in the demo thread before.
However there is a disconnect here that is easy to solve.
Nobody, that I'm aware of that has a problem with the dialogue is due to being a prude, US citizen, puritan, Christian or whatever. It is the problem where it sounds like a group of teenage boys got together and made it.
The disconnect, and I admit it is my fault too, is that most are unaware of the source property. Many like me believed when the game was revealed it would be a blade runner/neuromancer style world with the dialogue to match that world.
Others in this thread and the demo thread have stated that the Cyberpunk 2020 property the game is based on is like this, the pen and paper RPG. This is the game for them.
Therefore us bladerunner/neuromancer fans will have to go elsewhere or wait until another AAA release comes along. Or wait and hope the very little we've seen isn't indicative of the rest of the game.
What is "better use of swearing"? OP didn't exactly go into details. This is exactly what the OP is fucking saying though. He's asking for better use of swearing, not the removal of swearing. You (and about 90% of this thread) are making an argument out of some perceived idea that Resetera are all American Catholic grandma SJW cucks.
I have to say, almost every time I cross your try-hard hot takes on the topic I feel some sort of vicarious embarrassment.
Here in Liverpool, scousers do talk like this lolYou're not gonna convince me that this is how some of you people talk lol.
A 48 minute demo is not judging a book by its cover.I answered it best I could. If it had some other meaning, then it flew over my head. I apologise.
Just because other people do something, doesn't mean it's right. Some people are way to quick to jump the gun these days and don't let things play out.
If you want to jump conclusions about something based on a 2 minutes trailers, fill your boots. You want to judge a book by it's cover? Ditch a TV show just one episode? You do you. But for me, I'll actually wait until the finished game is out and I have more to go on than just a work-in-progress trailer.
You say you ditched FFXIII after 5 hours. I'm happy to judge Cyberpunk 2077's script after 5 hours of gameplay. That seems like a decent length of time to get a feel for something.

Exactly, some of these responses are completely missing the point. This is exactly what the OP is fucking saying though. He's asking for better use of swearing, not the removal of swearing. The point was the dialogue being awkward and the acting being less than stellar. Just to post the example again because it was at the bottom of the page, this felt weird not because the characters are swearing, but because of how unconvincing they sound:
I agree, it is rather embarassing how many dudes just can't seem to handle any sort of criticism of language or sexism. Gamerdude culture generally is overly focused on being tryhard edge with an overabundance of swears and general sexism, so it's not very surprising. but it is definitely embarassing.
That the language used here is unnatural, stilted and forced isn't exactly news. To be honest, it reads like babbys first fanfic on fanfiction.net in 2003.
Surely that's more down the the voice talent than an overabundance or use of the word "fuck"The point was the dialogue being awkward and the acting being less than stellar.
Comparing someone's writing to fanfiction of a specific era, thus implying that you read fanfiction, immediately dismisses your opinion regarding the quality of anyone's writing ^^I agree, it is rather embarassing how many dudes just can't seem to handle any sort of criticism of language or sexism. Sadly I don't think its just young people. Also older folks projecting their embarrassment onto others, think their embarrassment matters and they are saving people. When in reality, no one caresI think the opposite, that there's too many self righteous, pretentious young people on here that think they can tone police and shame others for their completely normal acceptable ways of speaking. How about "hey OP, how about some examples of what you mean?".What is "better use of swearing"? OP didn't exactly go into details.
But yeah, of course there are problems how swearing is used in a game. One does need to point out the examples though. Otherwise we will have reactions like this.
It's kinda sad when you need to explain that a real life dialog implies two sentient beings talking to each other without any consideration for a potential "spectator", and a fictional dialog is the work of a writer who literally puts words in fictional character's mouths for a spectator to hear them.Because IRL and Media writing are two different things. And because no, it sounds stilted and unnatural, like its being recorded at a studio rather than feeling natural, which just adds to the oddity of it all.
Man I'm only 22 and I agree with this, people are starting to get way too judgy and preachy here, some people really come off kids who have no experience ourside of there suburban bubble :eyes:. "I agree!" -> Then proceedes to go off a tangent about something completely unrelated to what the other person said.I agree, it is rather embarassing how many dudes just can't seem to handle any sort of criticism of language or sexism. CDPR-- please understand, cjw and offended people are the new battle royale these days, feel free to not give a fuck about the internet, thank you.

I don't give a FLIP.Please put up a bad word warning the next time you post something like this on Era.
Point taken. How about "hey OP, how about some examples of what you mean?".
Myeah, no.CDPR-- please understand, sjw and offended people are the new battle royale these days, feel free to not give a fuck about the internet, thank you.
READ "everyone wants to make hot takes".....
You are out of control and out of your mind using language like that so flippantly!
My username is a swear word now. Neato.
Don't start going down that road. People aren't offended. People are arguing against his points. You know, for all the talk about people being offended. People seem to be far more offended at the OP than the OP ever was at CDPR.
I feel like there would highkey be a not insignificant portion of people on gaming side who would use that quite frequently if this site didn't have good moderation and standards.
Ayy. Also, a lot of people are defending the fact that the game has swearing but no one is really defending the script and the acting which is what people have more issues with. :|You know, for all the talk about people being offended. I mean, it isn't like everyone talked like that. Dex was super chill and cursed only a couple times. Jackie, V, and the gangsters - all lowlife criminals - did the bulj of it, alongside the Trauma Team, who are basically military.
The corporate lady, Dex, the ripperdoc, hell, even Dum-Dum had pretty relaxed language. Not sure I see the issue. I saw nice variety in speaking styles.
You know you've got a good foot to stand on when you're lowkey accusing the people disagreeing with you as alt-right-lite, and have to constantly go "^this" to spotlight posts you agree with.I feel like there would highkey be a not insignificant portion of people on gaming side who would use that quite frequently if this site didn't have good moderation and standards.
Ayy
Dude, that's one idiot.
