Classic spongebob can rival classic Simpson's in some places. And this is coming from a guy who was too old for spongebob but watched it with his kids.

Studio didn't want the scene with gasoline and matches, but the rumor was that it was cut out of respect to the victims of September 11th that happened just a month before.
Weird, because I definitely do remember the flames. And I was living in NYC, so the rumors of 9/11 sensitivty are surely false.
Procrastination was also censored; Patrick putting suntan lotion on Sandy was removed. Unlike that episode, this episode censorship was abrupt. One moment SpongeBob was sitting on his disk, then he is suddenly standing and sits right back down.
I guess it almost looks like Patrick was taking off Sandy's bra. Plus there was stock footage of a dragster wreckage, which apparently Nickelodeon feared kids would imitate.
Oh surprised no one mentioned (unless I missed it) of that one joke in Squidville:

Mrs. Puff is the best recurring character on the show. I love how she's always in trouble with the law. In one episode we find out that can't leave town, or else she'd violate her parole. Then there's this:

They removed it from subsequent showings, remember watching Upick Live and the episode came on and it did not have that scene and I wondered as a kid what happened

BTW I couldn't be possibly be the only person here that was disappointed in the episode "Plankton's Army" (first airing) when the ads prior to the ending made it seem like a TV movie. Not to mention that marathon leading up to "Best Day Ever."
Yup. I thought that, too. I still remember being surprised when it went to a second episode after the commercial.
The bolded episode was after my time, but as a kid I recognized if they ever did week-long hype-fests for upcoming episodes (the House Party episode/The Sponge Who Could Fly), it was going to drop the ball.
Uncommon opinion: the end of Season 3 is when things started getting a little stinky.

The two episodes I mentioned were Season 3. I distinctly recall feeling those and Gary Takes a Bath as trying too hard to be funny.
I still remember seeing this version live when it originally aired.
To this day, the current version really sticks out. It just doesn't feel natural to me.
Nothing like this would get through censors today yeah. Nor anything like Rocko's modern world or Johnny Bravo or even Dexter or Power Puff Girls, all cartoons that had content which would be questionable to modern day parents.
In college, when SB was on Netlfix, from time to time I'd end up doing the nasty with it on it the background.
Had to stop coitus numerous times due the hilarity of what was going on in the episodea.

I tell you what, the interrogation scene in Krab Borg is 10 times funny not just for the lines and slapstick, but for that BGM when Squidward breaks Mr. Krabs' things.
