Hey y'all, so I'm going to be in Japan this fall to visit my little brother during his study abroad. We're planning to do Tokyo Disneyland, Ghibli Museum, stuff like that.

If I wanted to buy a Yoshitaka Amano painting while I was there, where would I do that? I see this company has his art, but only as prints: http://www.artvivant.net

lmao you don't.

not exactly what you're looking for, but if you go to the top floors of Nakano Broadway, there are some shops that sell animation cels and even weirder stuff from animation production. i saw a few, very expensive, fully matted key sequences from Miyazaki films.

I remember on 8-4 podcast that Mark McD got a sketch on a napkin from a guy who interviewed Amano.

That stuff is prolly worth thousands.

Origial painting might be expensive - do you mean a reprint?

Thanks, I'll have to check it out. I'm not looking for anything iconic, just a cool original to take home.

That is a cool idea! Definitely want to see how this plays out. Good luck OP.

I would love some Ayami Kojima artwork as well.

I expect somewhere in Nakano could have it. Or Mandarake, as mentioned.

BTW, just in case you haven't heard already, you must book Ghibli Museum tickets months in advance, especially from overseas. You can't just show up and pay admission.

Ah my avatar feels on topic. Yay, that's a first!

Maybe it's because I know it's Gatchaman, but I don;t see it.

Anyway, not sure if it applies to you OP, but I just read on ANN about a new exhibit featuring artist doing other artists' work in April.

Yep, that's an Amano oil painted Gundam. If I had your money, OP, that's what I'd want.

Your Imagination
ArtVivant usually organises yearly exhibitions of Amano artwork where you can actually purchase limited print runs. I've attended a couple of times in years gone by but am unaware if they have been held recently - still have a couple of free posters and clear folders from attending.

Seems like you're going to Tokyo at the wrong time OP, as you've just missed this; http://amano-exhibition.jp/

EDIT: Blogpost from a random salaryman who attended the event, detailing how he chose and purchased a painting [JP] https://takayuki-art.com/picture-of-yoshitaka-amano/
EDIT 2: Failing to track something down in person, try calling Art Vivant with a translator if you cannot speak Japanese or check out places like Mercari or Yahoo! Auctions JP.
EDIT 3: $10K comes in at around 100man at the moment so that should definitely be more than enough to get something - either by yourself or through a translator helping to ask around if you are willing to pay. Best bet is to contact Art Vivant if you want an original otherwise you may have to be happy with just a numbered print - good luck OP!
EDIT 4: Scrolling to the bottom of here; http://artvivant-fantasyart.net/ finds that they are touring Japan in the next month or so! If you could get someone from JapanERA to help out or pop over on a plane, you could 100% pick something up at the Tokyo event in Aqua Plaza (where I attended the aforementioned previous events)

This is really good info. Mercari is kinda like Craiglist?

Hopefully they run a similar exhibit later this year, as I'd like to attend in person. I'll send Art Vivant a note and see if they do overseas sales.

I can't get over this ink piece from Yahoo Auctions that sold for 100,000 yen. If only they were all that price!

Go to an art fair! You can find some cool stuff and support local artists for less than $100.
i meant art from a known artist worth the big bucks. i've looked up mini picasso sketches and his ceramics but even those are expensive.

that said my friends and i bought some published originals from an artist that did a lot of work from our favorite pen and paper rpg, we each spent a couple hundred.

If you're into Magic or D&D at all, some pieces from more well known artists are still floating around. Rebecca Guay, Tony DiTerlizzi (Spiderwick Chronicles), and Larry Elmore hit the market fairly often.

Update: Made contact with Mizuma Art Gallery in Tokyo. They are checking with Amano's office for his traditional ink paintings.

It's definitely possible. There have been events in Osaka where they have pieces on display that are available for purchase, including payment plans.

Probably a lot more difficult if there isn't an active event going on, but it sounds like you are already on the right track!

Make sure you get your brother to grab the Ghibli Museum tickets at a Lawson early in the morning the day the tickets go on sale for the period you are visiting. They sell out really fast because of scalpers and tour agencies.

I'll have to remember that! He's a bigger fan than me so hopefully he will have gone through the process already by the time I visit.

I heard that the Studio Ghibli museum only had captions in Japanese so I'm going to learn that before I go to Tokyo.
Hope you have a good time!
Not true. It's pretty English friendly, and the book you can buy at the store at the end that covers the entire museum has English and Japanese as well. The only non-English friendly part of the museum is the short film you get to watch, which won't be subtitled.

I don't have any advice as I'm just someone who buys lots of art books and dreams of owning stuff like this some day, but best of luck to you. I'd love to get an original Amano piece some day (and an original Toriyama piece to represent Dragon Quest).

I learned this the hard way. Missing out on the museum was the only disappointment of my trip.

Oh that's a relief. My Japanese is nonexistent.

In Akihabara there is a Square Enix cafe with a lotttt of merchandise and animation/sketches for sale. Might be a good spot to check out. It's really easy to find since it's right as you walk out of the JR Akihabara station and is right next to/same building kind of as a huge electronics store called Yodobashi Camera. It's like this 10 story electronics store.

Looks like they are doing Dragon Quest Builders 2 events right now though, may ask your brother to translate this page for more info:

I'm assuming you have been to Luida's Bar in Roppongi Hills? Can't remember if they sell merchandise but maybe.

I wonder if this cafe has that badass Sephiroth in the floor from their old location.

If you end up with something, would you mind letting us know how much you paid for in the end? I commissioned some work from a mangaka earlier this year (Shintaro Kago) and it was cheaper than I thought it would be, but still quite expensive.

I'll post here when I end up with a piece. Hoping to get a lead from a contact at Dark Horse.

There's a few pieces in his traditional fantasy style on the market, but they are pretty small at 10 inches/25 cm across.

The price floor is 2500 USD and goes up from there.

Debating between a piece from Mizuma Gallery and a Vampire Hunter D piece from another collector. The rest of the pieces the gallery is offering are glossy automotive paint pieces like the ones in the OP.
