'Black Myth: Wukong' doubled PS5 sales on the online store
Indie studio's game is proving to be China's biggest PC hit
(Bloomberg) -- The release of China's biggest PC game to date, Black Myth: Wukong, also sparked an unusual buying spree for Sony Group Corp.'s PlayStation 5.
The PS5 jumped to the top of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s list for electronics game equipment in the week leading up to Wukong's Aug. 20 release, doubling its sales from the same period a year earlier. Playable on the Sony console as well as on PC, Wukong was top of Alibaba's Taobao hot search on launch day and enticed gamers to buy new hardware in a market where mobile gaming typically reigns supreme.
While small by the scale of Sony's global business, the surge in China is a rare occasion of local consumers embracing the console segment of the gaming world. Sony and rival Nintendo Co. have tried for years to gain a stronger foothold in the world's biggest games market.
Developed by Hangzhou-based studio Game Science, Wukong was an instant hit, with more than 2.2 million PC gamers playing it concurrently around the world. It has sustained that momentum with well over a million people logged in and experiencing the mythical adventures of the titular Monkey King on Wednesday. Its popularity on consoles has yet to be quantified, but the early indication from these bumper PS5 sales in China — where consumer spending has been stunted for months — suggests the frenzy around the game is widespread.
Tencent Holdings Ltd. has a 5% stake in creator Game Science, which was founded by former Tencent employees, and also distributes the game on its WeGame online platform.

It seems it is probably going to be a pretty big seller on playstation as well. Hopefully it comes out on xbox sooner rather than later!

China is certainly a growth market for Sony. Games from their China Hero Project could become system sellers there too.

Their China Hero Project up until Black Myth: Wukong didn't really move the needle. Games like F.I.S.T. and Anno are even available on other platforms. I think what really made this game explode was the Chinese propaganda, knowing that this was big budget and based off Journey to the West.

I think it's even been reported that PS5 sales have lagged behind Switch sales in the country. I just can't see official consoles exploding in popularity there.

If I'm not wrong, given the gimped nature of the consoles officially available on the mainland, most consoles that are sold there come in through Hong Kong and from overseas imports (I think this is actually one theory as to why PS5 software sales are so atrocious in Japan this gen)

Card + CPU alone cost as much as a digital PS5.

That might not be that cheap for people who just want to play the new hot game.
Yeah, might be 'cheap' for a gaming PC, but compared to the cost of a console, it is still much more expensive. No to mention that consoles usually have a much hassle free user experience.

100%.

Especially for newcomers. PC is way more user-friendly than ever but against a "take it out of the box, plug it in, make an account, download/insert the game and start" it's still a huge difference. A prebuild PC + pre installed windows would help but that makes it even more expensive.

According to PC Part Picker, that cpu and gpu alone, with a $10 discount, is $396.

Add a mobo, power supply...and yeah. That's not cheap. I guess you could get a cheap case... Maybe cheap compared to other PC's.

One would be better off getting a console if price is an issue.

RTX 3060 + Ryzen 5 5600/Core i5 12400 + 16GB RAM. IDK, that seems like a pretty cheap PC to me.
Compared to a $399 PS5 it's not cheap at all. And in most parts of the world not named USA and a few european countries the difference is even more severe. And I'm not even taking into account the other components like the mobo, power supply, etc.

Eh, they've already released multiple projects under the Hero project and it hasn't done much.

PS5 is slightly benefiting from the mega hype from this game, but the small increase indicates it's not much to move the needle.

The western-centric viewpoint is showing its face again.

The console might be cheap compared to PC parts in the US
This is not the case in many parts of the world.

Yes, and i'm in Europe and PC parts aren't cheap either. At all. Maybe the US get better deals, but even with those better prices, it's still more expensive then buying a console.
Even the Rog Ally i own cost me way more than a PS5 or a Switch
"cheap" is a matter of perspective lol
even if considering something cheap iis a matter of perspective, the difference in price of a capable PC vs a console is still there and is objective

Is it the case in China? By all accounts the PC version of this game is outselling the console version multiple times over. Typically you'd expect the cheaper and more hassle free console to be driving sales. Though at least when I was growing up, it was easier to ask my parents for money for a nice PC that I could study with compared to a games console that only had one function. That may play into it.

That PC isn't cheap compared to a PS5 but then again that's not what was being responded to. The original post said you needed really good specs to play the game and you don't.

The poster said you can have ps5 like performance for cheap. Not surprising that price and not whether it runs on lower specced machines became part of the convo

Your 400 500 dollar box isn't the equivalent of 500 dollars in many parts of the world. And PC parts in china and other developing countries are cheaper than in the west.

or do you think the massive PC player base in those countries are buying PC's which cost half a year of their salaries if they would be priced the same as in the west?

The difference in price when buying the hardware is objetive. Whether gaming in general on consoles is cheaper is what it's a matter of perspective.
