Bloomberg Update

View: https://twitter.com/jasonschreier/status/1662174968384311296?s=20

Sony Group Corp. has slowed down development on an upcoming multiplayer game in its long-running The Last of Us video game series as the creators reassess its quality and long-term viability, according to four people familiar with the project.

The team working on the game was scaled back after a recent evaluation, said the people, who asked not to be named because they weren't authorized to speak publicly. A small group remains on the project while the company reevaluates the direction. While the game has not been canceled, many of its developers have been moved to other projects.

Following requests for comment from Bloomberg News, Naughty Dog, the Sony subsidiary working on the project, put out a statement on Twitter saying that "we've realized what's best for the game is to give it more time."

Naughty Dog has been developing the multiplayer title for at least four years. It started as a complementary mode to The Last of Us: Part II, the single-player game released in 2020, but the creators grew ambitious and decided to make it into its own game, Naughty Dog said.

Sony has invested heavily in "games as a service," or video games designed to be monetized beyond their initial sales through ongoing purchases. As part of that push it asked another of its video-game studios, Seattle-based Bungie, to evaluate the games across its portfolio. Bungie raised questions about the The Last of Us multiplayer project's ability to keep players engaged for a long period of time, which led to the reassessment.

Its good they're doing this statement before the game is out instead of after.

Oof Bummer, but hoping for the best. In retrospect it's funny people were guessing it would shadow drop during the showcase

Damn, people really hated that showcase.

The fact that they had to mention that they are also working on single player games is funny tbh.

I'm sure social media towards them must have been just ridiculous to necessitate such a needlessly obvious statement

Why are they saying anything, it's not like they said the game was going to be shown soon or anything? Are fans just losing their shit that much that Naughty Dog feels the need to issue this just so people don't think the project has been cancelled or something?

No rush - I'm sure the game will be incredible and there's plenty to play in the meantime.

Wonder what that SP game is, definitely not Part III or anything I'm sure

Gamers suck so much that they had to force ND to apologise for not showing up at showcase.

They can take as long as they need, they want the game to be a success and a good first impression will help immensely with that

I'm happy they put out this statement. It just makes the wait that much harder. Hearing them mention the single player game gives me confidence that it is coming along well.

And on the other it's cool that video game development becomes more "mature" like the film & music industry is besides the usual beefs of some figures. It's cool to know that x is working on y and that they unfortunately needed it to cancel.

They shouldn't have to do this in the 1st place but they felt they had to due to all the complaints.

High time people stop thinking of this project as just a multiplayer mode. It's clearly drastically bigger than that.

I'm glad they said something. It's legit my most anticipated game and knowing it's still trucking is good news. I'm still bummed we won't be seeing it for some time though

The timing I guess implies it was originally going to be shown at the showcase?
I'm sure Sony really wanted to have something TLOU to show after the success of the HBO series. Good on them for not showing it if it wasn't ready.

Why are they saying anything, it's not like they said the game was going to be shown soon or anything? Are fans just losing their shit that much that Naughty Dog feels the need to issue this just so people don't think the project has been cancelled or something?

have you met Gamers

If it was up to me I'd release this type of statement before the event airs. Set expectations.

Still, alright. Looking forward to it in 2025, I guess.
