Update:

I think this is the first time we've got confirmation that the PS4 and XB1 versión are going to be 60FPS. Also 4K support on Pro and X. So happy I didn't switch to the Switch and held on to PS4.
I don't expect rock solid 60FPS on vanilla PS4 and XB1 but at least it'll be targeting 60.

April 25th Original:

From the latest update that also included an explanation of the poor performance of the Switch build at PAX.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/iga/bloodstained-ritual-of-the-night/posts/2489840

We did have an issue at the show with the Switch version that drew a lot of backer discussion. Due to the way the consoles were kept inside closed containers for the demo, there ended up being a significant overheating issue. This caused the game to drop frames and not run as smoothly as we would have liked. That same build (as well as subsequent ones) is much more stable when the console isn't overheated. There have also been optimizations since the show to prepare for console submission (an ongoing process).

With that said, here are the launch stats for the game on Switch.

Undocked: 720p (fixed) / 30 fps

Docked: 720p (*dynamic) / 30 fps with additional effects / visuals, etc.

*Dynamic in the sense that it can go higher than 720p, not lower.

And when playing in docked mode, is there a toggle to trade off the additional effects for stable 720p?

There is no toggle, but it won't drop below 720p.

Also the game won't run at 4k on the PS4 Pro.

No 4k on PS4 Pro.

We will have the stats for the other consoles in a future update.

Who the heck says "Dynamic 720p" as a way to say "It won't go below 720p"?

What's the maximum res? 900p? 1080p?

I wish they would have said this before the platform cutoff. I changed my $100 edition from PS4 to Switch for portable IGA, but at that rez/framerate I'd have never made that decision.

Poor wording if it's like 900p dynamic but mostly hovers at 720p.
Makes it sound like it goes bellow 720p.

Guess I'll wait to see how this turns out. If it's bad on switch I guess I'll just skip it everywhere

Makes me realize how crazy talented Team Cherry is to make to most visually and technically appealing Metroidvania run so well on the switch

Or... more accurately the porting team that is

Literally trying to wrap my head around why this game just EATs resources for breakfast

Native res is nice. 60 fps had been great too but I'm not too sensetive about that. Hard to be a Switch only gamer otherwise.

Tbf one is a 2D game and the other a UE4 3D game.

I can live with 30fps

Just crazy that this game demands so much considering the scope its working under

I wonder what drives its resource requirements. What engine is this being built with?

30FPS!? Nope! Not good enough!

Damn shame... I really wanted the Switch version first and foremost. Guess I'll just have to play it on PC instead :(

UE4. You can hit 60 fps with the engine on Switch, but it's not easy and frequently requires compromises of some kind, as we saw with Travis Strikes Again being very simple visually, or Yoshi's Crafted World running at considerably sub-HD resolutions even in docked mode. I would certainly prefer if they prioritized 60 fps with how important it is for Metroidvania titles of all kinds, but I guess it may not have been in the cards.

It probably would have been below 720p undocked for 60 fps - assuming that this would've been an option at all without knowing for certain how the underlying systems work.

60 fps > res all day, tho, so this is a bummer indeed.

Guess that answers why the Wii U version died so fast
It's honestly shocking, i guess it's not fair to compare games but if bayonetta 2 could do 60 fps at 720p on the wii u (granted it had a lot of dips but it was still able to stick around 60) i don't get why bloodstained struggles to keep 30 at 720p. Is it because of the engine?

Thanks for the info

My next question was going to be centered around examining other UE4 games on the system for context

Appreciated

At the very least its 720p on handheld mode, not many Switch games get that privilege

Man, I didn't notice that the game was going to run at 30fps on Switch. That stinks. I already changed my version to the Switch version as a Backer, so oh well. I'm still excited for the game, but 60fps would have been perfect.

30fps is crazy. I skipped Ys VIII on Switch cause of that and i'll probably skip this too if it's not improved. :/

At least give us 60 at docked.

Is it 60 on ps4?

Of course news like this drops after they prevent backers from changing the platform of their copy...
