Liked this more than I expected to. Just wish it had a bit more downtime with the "family." Felt like it was in a hurry to get to set piece to set piece.

I can appreiacte why some might not like Taskmaster here but I thought it worked thematically.

Considering Tasky doesn't have one in the comics I'm fine with this being Toni's origin as long as they don't wimp out on it. Not everyone has to choose the straight and narrow

edit
Also love how Red guardiansays he fought Cap before the undercover job when he's bragging in jail. People assume he's lying but in the comics the US created several fake caps during his absence for spec ops, considering what we know from F&WS I wouldn't doubt it. Fun ref

Finally got a chance to watch this the other day. I thought it was pretty middle to middle low tier in the MCU. Enjoyable enough but didn't really stand out. That being said I did really enjoy Yelena and the Red Guardian and I hope to see them return in future MCU movies/shows. A daddy/daughter Disney+ show could be fun.

I do wish they had toned down the action sequences somewhat. Having Black Widow do some crazy shit in movies full of super powered people doesn't feel so weird but when no one besides the Red Guardian has powers (and even his powers just seem to be he's pretty strong and can jump higher than normal humans) it did feel a little silly at times.

I watched it yesterday at the theater. I really liked it, even though I've always been more into the supernatural side of the MCU. The set pieces were fun, and I really enjoyed the characters. I never cared for Natasha before, but she was great in this, and she finally got some long deserved character development, too bad it was this late. Alexei was the highlight for me, but I agree that he could've been a little more than comic relief. I didn't like the post-credit scene though, I really hope the whole Hawkeye series is not gonna be about the fight between two "good" characters because of a misunderstanding.

Also the Budapest scenes were the "DiCaprio pointing at the TV" meme for me since I pretty much live there and it was fun seeing locations that I used to go to daily.

Saw it on release day and had time to think about it.

Ended up liking it. Not quite an origin story or anything and kinda glad too. The comedic parts were great. I wanted to see more of what Alexei can do besides being strong and jump higher than the average guy.
The climax at the end, I expected more of a fight. The origin of Taskmaster was ehhh. If they kept it mysterious, I would have rolled with that.

David Harbour and Florence Pugh carried this movie. Saw the scene after the end credits. Prepared for the Hawkeye D+ series.

Just watched it. I liked it more than I thought I would. It got better over time. At first it felt like it was trying to be too funny. It was hard to take anything seriously. But once I got more into the characters, the humor started to land better for me. I love Milena. At least, I think that was the sister's name. I quite liked the first encounter with Taskmaster and I loved the entire falling sky fortress sequence. That shit was badass and felt very different to what we usually get for Marvel climaxes. Solid 7/10 movie for me.

I thought it was pretty good but the most tonally inconsistent of any of the mcu films. Scenes switch between killing children to scenes with trademark quips and gags. Moments of genuine emotion interrupted with comic relief. Down to earth gritty action followed by unrealistic over the top cgi.

A lot of people make a big deal of "its not a superhero film, its an X film." with these movies like heist or political thriller and its always bullshit. This is the first time its actually felt like a completely different movie with superhero stuff forced in.

Really should have came out years ago though. Like instead of Captain Marvel.

I did like though how the accents got worse as the film went on. Starting good, then with each character introduced they got progressively worse until he final villain comes out with some godfather impression thats a weird mix with Cockney.

Edit: Also Taskmaster. I didn't read the comics with TM or know anything. But regardless the villain presented here sucks hard in this movie. Might have been okay if it wasn't an archetype already done ten times in the MCU and better. Liked the fight scenes though. All 2 or 3 of them.

The soundtrack was surprisingly good. Overall, MCU soundtracks are extremely forgettable. Even the main Avengers theme is average as hell imo. I thought this song alone blew everything that came before it out of the water.

Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney over 'Black Widow' streaming release, saying it was a breach of contract to put it on Disney+ at same time.

Taskmaster doesn't have an origin in the comics other than he's a money hungry merc who has the ability to copy moves. His reasons why are never touched upon. Oh and he hates Deadpool because he can't predict or copy him

Finally decided to watch since I had nothing to do this weekend. And I'd say this is bottom tier MCU. The major problem is the tonal inconsistency. This always becomes a big problem when Marvel tries to push too hard against another genre. Their films are all superhero films with light flourishes of other genres.

Black Widow wants to be a spy thriller, but the Marvel superhero framework presents this from happening. So anytime it starts to get mildly interesting as we move into spy territory, it very quickly over corrects with superhero shenanigans. The entire final act is really a slog because of this as the film is incapable of setting up twists and thus resorts to immediate flashbacks to justify sudden turns.

"Damn, wonder how Natasha will get out of this."

*cue flashback showing how this was all part of the plan*

😒

So a random thought that keeps popping up to me, I'm not sure if it's a criticism of the film necessarily or just an observation of mine.

Is anyone else surprised that, for being a Black Widow themed movie, there was...surprisingly little espionage? Once Natasha gets set on her course by the Taskmaster attack making her realize she had the vials and where they came from, everything felt like a very straightforward line of knowing right where and who to go to, on a trajectory that led right to to the Red Room. You get the bit of Natasha trying to bait Dreykov into severing the nerves in her nose and waiting for him to reveal how his control over the Widows works (incidentally, how stupid of him to fall for the exact same tactics that his own Widows were taught in order to get information? I suppose it's chalked up to typical villain overconfidence), but otherwise Natasha knows instantly to go to Yelena (leading to a bombastic car chase and subway scuffle), then Natasha knows instantly to go find Alexei and where he is (leading to a massive prison fight and avalanche), and Alexei knows instantly to go to Milena and where she is, who then escorts them all directly to the Red Room from there (where they're found out near immediately and end up blowing up the entire thing). It felt like there was startlingly little information gathering going on and basically never a need for Natasha and Yelena to go somewhere, complete a task, and get out without being detected. You know...the stuff that Black Widow is supposed to be the specialist in.

See above. It's just standard Marvel affair, the same happened with the Winter Soldier. People enjoy that film, but it is definitely not some sort of spy or political thriller. Actually think about the plot of TWS, there is little to no espionage. Cap is handed a USB by Fury, the USB leads him to an old SHIELD base, and a computer AI then reveals to him everything, like slide shows and all.

Marvel films like this just add light flourishes of their genre, it's like when they say Spider-Man: Homecoming has inspirations from a John Hughes film. Like, come on. Besides being set in High School, it's a standard super-hero film. Or Ant-Man being a heist film, come on, son. There are token elements that pay some homage to these genres, but they're all just standard super-hero films. Widow just hurts the most because of how much it wants to be a spy thriller but can't be because it's really a super hero film at its core.
