Is there any reason why Victoria seems to be consistently experiencing deaths that seem disproportionately high compared to their cases, hospitalisations, and ICU cases?

I know that the case data is kind of questionable now, but hospitalisation and ICU data should still be accurate.

There's an ABC article from early January which gave some possible reasons for it back then (omicron vs delta percentage, small difference in vaccination levels) but they don't check out for still contributing to the difference.
www.abc.net.au

Victoria has fewer COVID-19 cases than New South Wales, so why are more people dying?

Experts believe the impact of the Omicron wave in New South Wales might explain why the state is recording tens of thousands of more cases than Victoria, but surprisingly fewer deaths.

The easy answer might be the right one, a difference in the preparedness of the health system. But I don't know how much of that is political spin.

Hospitalisations pretty much peaked in NSW, QLD and VIC.

Let's see in a month or so what else Santa brings with him.

Oh fuck, it's Friday! Lost track of time on leave...

Hospitalisations in NSW up, reversing the flattening trend of last week. ICU numbers up too.

Gonna have to see what the next few weeks bring.

Any updates on why there are consistently so many more deaths in Victoria vs NSW, despite NSW having more cases, hospitalisations, and ICU cases? This isn't an aberration, this is week in, week out. What the hell is going on? Does anyone know?

I think Victoria's hospitals weren't as prepared. Fewer hospital beds and similar things. If you compare the hospitalisation rates, I think it becomes clear that some people who would be hospitalised in NSW aren't able to be hospitalised in VIC.

Article from a year ago about Victoria's health system compared to other states: https://www.theage.com.au/national/...althiest-hospital-system-20220131-p59sl7.html

Small decline in hospitalisations NSW - hasn't been this low since November. We always seem to bounce off 800-900, so hopefully we can dip into the lower triple digits.

Weird numbers for VIC. Maybe the week prior had some accounting issues which means they were higher than should have been that week and lower this week.

Possibly we'll hear in a few weeks regarding a fifth shot (winter booster). I'll get one if available, along with my winter flu shot. At this stage I've never officially had covid, but have been sick when testing wasn't available. I'm in crowds a lot more these days, so the more protection the better.

I was tooling around with my google maps timeline yesterday and decided to take a look at my movement in March 2020 and the months following. Every trip told me a story of where I was leading up to it and I remembered the feelings associated with each one. From the pre-lockdown trips, conversations with friends and family, to my trips to supermarkets looking for things like rice and flour, to my 10km walks, trying to stay sane. Definitely interesting.

Anyway, good trends.

An ABC report I read last night suggested that NSW was possibly starting a new wave as presentations to emergency departments were on the rise.

www.abc.net.au

New COVID wave 'likely' underway in NSW, latest report shows

There have been four waves of COVID in NSW since Omicron became the dominant variant at the beginning of 2022, each one smaller than the last.

Since I was just waiting for some sign to get a third booster before winter, this prompted me to book and I got one today. I got the Pfizer bivalent one....I'm trying to collect them all. Since I'm catching trains these days, I'd prefer to be as covered as possible.

Today's NSW hospitalisation numbers showed a third week of flattening and a slight rise in hospitalisations.

Not a huge rise in hospitalisations in NSW so far this wave, if you'd call it one, has been pretty flat.
