The spines are pretty important as soon as the collection reaches a certain size. Imagine the PAL PS2 box design with super slim cases; you'd have a hard time finding a specific game.
I wouldn't mind if we went back to CD case size at all, but made of the same material that the BD and DVD ones are made of.
As cool as they look, I would absolutely hate to go back to using them from a practical point.

These things crack so easily and I can only imagine what shipping wod do.
NES carts had quite a bit of plastic in them.
Which is why they didn't need the extra protection a plastic case would provide.

Bring back the PS1 CD case form factor, but just use the plastic material of current cases, so they don't shatter easily.
