It's definitely distributed. I think the netcode is good as any other distributed p2p, but the tick rate (how quickly and often it refreshes with new information from the internet) is capped at an abysmal 16Hz, which is the biggest reason Splatoon 2 internet play feels particularly crappy compared to any other shooter. Is Splatoon 2 actually peer-to-peer or is it really just client-server where one of the players is designated as the server?
I litterally don't know of any other online shooter that's worse than 20Hz, which just that would be 33% faster than Splatoon 2. The biggest shooters have been moving to 60Hz in the last couple of years.
