The first time I heard the term "garbanzo bean" was when I lived in the States for a spell. (You could probably make a similar thread for cilantro vs. coriander.)

After a little research it is apparently just made with 'pulses', so I think chickpeas fall under that umbrella! I think every time I've made a chickpea curry though it's been called something else, like chana masala, aloo sabzi, or chole.
In Arabic and Hebrew the bean is called Hummus, so that's what I call it...

In the US, we call the leaves and stems of the plant "cilantro" and the seed "coriander". In other English-speaking parts of the world, "coriander" is used for both with "seed" being added for distinction.
