We have to harvest deer/wild pig in this country. We just do. Because of awful choices in resource/environmental management that have been made in the past, there are no/insufficient numbers of natural predators for those animals. And even when we reintroduce species like wolves, in areas where they would be set up to have enough food, dumbass ranchers/farmers still take out the predators.
I've harvested deer before. A good hunter makes sure there is a clean kill. And if you take the right shot, and have the right equipment, the animal doesn't suffer. Also, I can help out the less fortunate as well. The game butchers I have used, in conjunction with local food banks, will take/prep/deliver an animal. I can't eat a whole deer. So I take what I want, and the rest is given to a food bank. I haven't come across one that charges to deliver to a food bank, and the one I use, I foot the bill to have the meat processed, turned into sausage, whatever it needs to make it easier to serve.
If you are anti-gun/vegan, whatever, I understand you have your reasons for it. But don't think its some sort of weird rush to harvest an animal. I don't get a rush out of it. Sometimes, it makes me sad. But, I've got food in my fridge and food for my family, and then food for those who need it.
Hunting in the United States is still a viable way for many people to economically and ecologically obtain healthy protein. Honestly, harvesting a deer has way less environmental impact that one cow in factory farming.
I've never taken a trophy. I've never even taken a picture of a deer I've harvested. Its not my thing.
I can't say what happens to hogs after a hunt, since the only hog hunt I've even witnessed was a rite of passage in Hawai'i. And those get eaten. I can't say what happens on the mainland other than feral hogs are an artificially introduced invasive species that need to be controlled.
