Kamiya wrote like a very long article responding to the questions

I was kinda expecting him to just say 'nothing' again, lol

NiOh 3 will be heavily based on Ghost's influence, I take from this.

I'm shocked to not only see Atelier Ryza 2 in the list, but that multiple people picked it. I hope this means it's actually good.

I was shocked at no 13 Sentinels, then i realized oh it actually came out last year in japan

I was wondering why it was a complete no-show in the lists. Didn't realize it came out so long ago!

Considering Itsuno said he's pretty much done with DMC after 5, i don't see the issue.

He never said that. He's only said something to the tone of he doesn't wanna make DMC6 right after DMC5. And going by the Capcom leaks (and past history), if Itsuno isn't working on DMC internally, then no one is.

Also going by the leaks, Onimusha seems to be in the works anyway, while Itsuno is presumably doing Dragon's Dogma 2. He has so much else he wants to do anyway (Dragon's Dogma, Power Stone, RS, a new fighting game IP, Street Fighter), and Onimusha's never been on his list since he's never worked on the series before. I doubt he'd want to adopt another forlorn Capcom action series, even if his bosses asked him to.

Seems like it's hard to understate the splash Tsushima made with the Japanese dev community. Really curious what things will look like in 5 years when every Japanese studio has had a chance to bake all their Tsushima influences into their next project.

Heh, seems like from Western developed games they gravitated towards the ones with best Japanese representation.

Don't think you got it right, I counted 15 for Cyberpunk, 9 for FF7 and something like 35 for Ghost. Atleast going from the list in the OP.

I can't remember the thread, [n/m - found it] but I remember the lead Sega/Yakuza guy had a lot of positive things to say about it. (Thread got derailed into an assessment of how attractive Jin is though).... I also remember from the game's bts commentary that it covers a specific period that even Japanese media hasn't really touched on, so it's no surprising that if a completely foreign studio came along and made a great game set in a period that your own peers haven't really used, then it could come across as an unexpected/pleasant surprise to them.

That's a surprising amount of cyberpunk considering FPS tend to be unpopular in Japan

Too much Ghost. Not enough TLOU2

Japanese devs sure loved Ghost. Curious if they are impressed just because a western dev was able to respectfully represent the culture and history. From a game design standpoint I don't see what would impress them over the other candidates

Yakuza Director Praises Ghost of Tsushima, Says Japan Should've Made It

Toshihiro Nagoshi, Sega’s executive director of the Yakuza games, has many good things to say about Ghost of Tsushima.

That thread got derailed by the attractiveness stuff, but it is really interesting that the realistic character designs hit him so hard, both just because the sort of other-worldly beauty expected of Japanese protagonists is such an entrenched thing, and also because I genuinely wonder for Nagoshi personally how many times he's had to deal with execs wanting him to make prettier Yakuza boys.

And the historical stuff is also really interesting, since to me it seemed like a Western studio, not really wanting to grapple with how politically isolated Japan has been for most of history, where every conflict is a complicated civil war, found the one event where they could tell a more Western-appealing story of foreign invasion, and turned it into this sort of East Asian Thermopylae story, (and also fast-forwarded samurai culture a few hundred years to get that very early story more in line with our sense of later feudal Japanese aesthetics) but that seems to have really resonated with Japan audiences.

Well for one the gameplay and combat is more fun on average.
