Gamexplain's review explains the story mode well if you want to watch it to get an idea.

Edit: here you go if anyone is interested,

I wonder if anyone at Camelot/Nintendo realizes that these games became big because of their lauded single player modes on goddamn GBC. It doesnt seem like it would be hard to replicate that, but those are still the standard all these years later.

Some people may not realize Mario Golf and Mario Tennis on GBA were literally full JRPGs with multiple mini-games to train, NPCs, tournaments and equipment and stats. People have been hoping for the series to return to that for years. And when Aces was revealed, I could have sworn they specifically hyped up the return to an RPG single player mode. I think it was in a Nintendo Direct.

If the ONLY reason you want it is to get that game boy campaign again you should bail now.

Other than that it's a good tennis game with really solid mechanics.

I was also left with the impression adventure mode was a full-fledged story mode. Not just a tutorial.

I was also under the impression that there would be a more notable singleplayer campaign and I vaguely remember a mention of RPG elements. I feel like that was one of the things people tended to bring up, misguided or not. Weird how there seemed to be such a mass illusion surrounding the game. I never actively followed it or had any significant interest in it.

There are RPG elements. Apparently they don't really matter though because they only apply to the adventure mode, which is over before you notice a difference.

Seeing those screenshots and videos hurts me so much....I adored that GBA game back in the day. It's such a shame the modern Nintendo doesn't want anything to do with these original characters.

Well shoot... This was like, literally the only game that truly interested me left for the year for the switch cause I thought it had a full fledged campaign. It's be a different story if my friends were into these kind of games but they're not, guess I'm not getting this till it becomes $20 in a few years of ever.

"And this time, the game adds the first story mode since the Mario Tennis Power Tour game on Game Boy Advance, offering a new flavor of tennis gameplay with a variety of missions, boss battles, and more."

Honestly, if Nintendo never added that line into their January Nintendo Direct, we wouldn't have nearly as much disappointment. It was a big, big mistake to compare Mario Tennis Aces's story mode to the GBA iteration.

If you want to purchase the game mostly for the Adventure Mode, you will be greatly disappointed.
I'm glad the word is getting out before you guys and gals purchased the game! I'm good with the limited Adventure Mode and local and online play, myself, but yeah, as time went along, it was apparent this wasn't like the Game Boy Color / Game Boy Advance games' story modes. That much was certain for a while now, but not everyone follows every game intently obviously.

Yep. That's really too bad. Tennis on GBA is absolutely legendary. It's on Wii U VC by the way for anyone who never played it.

Honestly, I'm just happy they even said the name of the GBA game out loud so I know it wasn't all a dream. Maybe they'll improve it for the next one. I'm still psyched as the core gameplay is insanely good.

I mean, I never did.

How do you people cope with the lack of adventure mode in Mario Kart?

????

How do you mean?
Just from the trailers, they both show prerendered cutscenes, character interactions via textbox, world maps, bosses, equipment, and regular gameplay. It makes Mario Tennis to look like as much of an RPG as Mario & Rabbids.

Wow, had no idea they said that. No wonder everyone here hyped up the story mode lol.

I for one am super glad this OP was made. I was thinking about picking it up for the story mode. Thanks OP! Do either of the other tennis games that came out this year have a decent career mode?

Wasn't there only like one Mario tennis campaign that people like?

Anyway they were pretty clear from the beginning that the story mode exists for the sole purpose of teaching you the games mechanics. Any disapointment you have from high hopes is on you, so
Yeah, this is what I don't understand. If anything, it was more likely that it wasn't like that one.

In any case, who's buying a sports game for the single player story? Don't get it.

Never in those lines do they imply that it would play or have the RPG systems of the GBA games. You would think that people would learn after Paper Mario 3DS claimed that it would have turn based system after Super Paper Mario. A statement like that hardly means that it would play like those.

Always pay attention to the footage instead of falling into false expectations.

User warned: "lazy devs" rhetoric
I mean, I never did.

Um people have been asking for a Diddy Kong style adventure mode in Mario Kart for quite some time now, and/or better single player content for MK in general. Particularly with Sonic Racing having brought a lot to the table single player wise. Nintendo is a kind of lazy with that franchise too, but at least it has a healthy amount of overall content both in single and multiplayer. This game is lacking content on both ends.

They hyped that it was a single player mode after many years, which is true. If it's good it's another story.

That's untrue, they never said that it was exatly the same thing in this, just made an example with the last one that had a story mode while showing what Aces has which they delivered.. maybe not in what you expected but everything was there. It was clear since the beginning that it was something gimmick and very different than those modes.

Was talking to some friends on Discord and they said the story mode is apparently really bad. Then I heard it's only 3 hours long and super linear? What happened to the Mario Tennis campaigns of old? I saw the trailer and got pretty excited when it had a world map and there were equipment and stuff. But apparently there isn't much to it at all? Camelot can't keep getting away with this.... :(

"In any case, who's buying a sports game for the single player story? Don't get it."

One of the most successful indie games on the Switch is just that in Golf Story, and it's a game that clearly riffing on the developer's work that developed this game. It shouldn't exactly be a hard concept to get.

Hell even EA is putting rather large story modes and extensive single player content in their sports games these days.

I'm pretty sure they dropped that feature this year

While I wasn't expecting a full-on RPG mode (that seems to be beyond a studio the size of Camelot), I did figure they would try to make a hefty stage-based story mode (well at least longer than 3 hours) with challenges to redo stages for. Not even doing that is quite a shame

It's pretty much exactly what they advertised, Mario on a world map facing opponents and completing challenges/mini-games. With bosses sprinkled in.

They showed a bit of the upgrading but it always looks minimal at best. Its primarily a multiplayer game, and while the single player isn't very deep, it's better than most Mario kart/Mario Sports so I'm not complaining. The core gameplay and feel hasn't felt this good since the N64.

GameXplain said it best: there's no point in leveling up or gaining experience or choosing different rackets when the entire single player experience is barely three hours...it feels too hollow because of its brevity and you can't carry that experience into anywhere except that super-short single-player....so what's the point?

At least my leveled-up character can play in multiplayer / exhibition on the GBA...

What... argument? We're talking about cool campaign modes in sports games.

The argument you are making saying that NBA 2K18 has a cool campaign when it has Virtual Currency meaning either you grind for hours upon hours or pay for it. I'm not sure how that is considered "cool".

Edit: Thanks for calling me a weirdo, kinda shows the type of person you are...

I always thought it was odd how people were hyping up the story mode. The footage we saw showed Mario on a world map going from challenge to challenge. That screamed "RPG"? I'd like an RPG mode too, but seriously, the footage we saw did not make it look like anything too elaborate. Mario Golf World Tour looked more like one of those old RPGs than Aces did.

Gamexplain also gave it a 'likes a lot' which is the second highest score they have. The core gameplay is really fun and it's high presentation values for the most part.

To add to this, I played 80 hours of Virtual Tennis 4's story mode. I've never had that much for with a sports game.

This is sooorta my reaction to the news. From my understanding, Aces seems to have the best campaign since before the N64 entry. Having said that, I believe some of the marketing hyped up this story mode to something that it just wasn't (and by the looks of things, isn't) going to be, so disappointment for some isn't really unexpected (and is also understandable).
