I was also under the impression that there would be a more notable singleplayer campaign and I vaguely remember a mention of RPG elements. I feel like that was one of the things people tended to bring up, misguided or not. Weird how there seemed to be such a mass illusion surrounding the game.
Some people may not realize Mario Golf and Mario Tennis on GBA were literally full JRPGs with multiple mini-games to train, NPCs, tournaments and equipment and stats. People have been hoping for the series to return to that for years. And when Aces was revealed, I could have sworn they specifically hyped up the return to an RPG single player mode. I think it was in a Nintendo Direct.
Yep. That's really too bad. Tennis on GBA is absolutely legendary. It's on Wii U VC by the way for anyone who never played it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_DlHwDc55s
"And this time, the game adds the first story mode since the Mario Tennis Power Tour game on Game Boy Advance, offering a new flavor of tennis gameplay with a variety of missions, boss battles, and more."
Honestly, if Nintendo never added that line into their January Nintendo Direct, we wouldn't have nearly as much disappointment. It was a big, big mistake to compare Mario Tennis Aces's story mode to the GBA iteration.
Just from the trailers, they both show prerendered cutscenes, character interactions via textbox, world maps, bosses, equipment, and regular gameplay. It makes Mario Tennis to look like as much of an RPG as Mario & Rabbids.I mean, I never did.
How do you people cope with the lack of adventure mode in Mario Kart?
????
How do you mean?

Yeah, this is what I don't understand. If anything, it was more likely that it wasn't like that one.Wasn't there only like one Mario tennis campaign that people like?
Anyway they were pretty clear from the beginning that the story mode exists for the sole purpose of teaching you the games mechanics. Any disapointment you have from high hopes is on you, so
You mean the one literally referenced in the Nintendo Direct, as evidenced by a post on this page? Doesn't seem too far-fetched.Yeah, this is what I don't understand. If anything, it was more likely that it wasn't like that one.

Oldschool fans who remember Mario Tennis and Mario Golf when Camelot actually put effort into their releases, and everyone who bought Golf Story on the eShop. In any case, who's buying a sports game for the single player story? Don't get it.
They are, but not in any great capacity, or to any great depth.

Was talking to some friends on Discord and they said the story mode is apparently really bad. Then I heard it's only 3 hours long and super linear? What happened to the Mario Tennis campaigns of old? I saw the trailer and got pretty excited when it had a world map and there were equipment and stuff. But apparently there isn't much to it at all? Camelot can't keep getting away with this.... :(

Yeah, this is one o the things that made me go back on my decision to get this game. That and I jut didn't have much fun with the beta.Damn. I thought it was good. The trailers made it seem amazing. Preorder cancelled I guess. I'll stick to sushi striker this month.
I'm pretty sure they dropped that feature this yearHell even EA is putting rather large story modes and extensive single player content in their sports games these days.
MK7 was undeniably disappointingI was hoping with a leveling system and different rackets being shown, that it wouldn't be that short.... Eh glad I went to buy Mario + Rabbids instead anyway.
Well I was not happy that MK7 lacked VS for single player.:P
Have you seen what 2K Games has been doing though? It's pretty crazy.

What... argument? We're talking about cool campaign modes in sports games. What do microtransactions have to do with anything? Stop being a weirdo.Showing a game riddled with microtransactions isn't going to really support your argument unless you want that in Mario Tennis too?
It's pretty much exactly what they advertised, Mario on a world map facing opponents and completing challenges/mini-games. With bosses sprinkled in.
They showed a bit of the upgrading but it always looks minimal at best. Its primarily a multiplayer game, and while the single player isn't very deep, it's better than most Mario kart/Mario Sports so I'm not complaining. The core gameplay and feel hasn't felt this good since the N64.

was the clear?! Because I've followed everything and that seems like a lie.Wasn't there only like one Mario tennis campaign that people like?

GameXplain said it best: there's no point in leveling up or gaining experience or choosing different rackets when the entire single player experience is barely three hours...it feels too hollow because of its brevity and you can't carry that experience into anywhere except that super-short single-player....so what's the point?
At least my leveled-up character can play in multiplayer / exhibition on the GBA...
To add to this, I played 80 hours of Virtual Tennis 4's story mode. I've never had that much for with a sports game."In any case, who's buying a sports game for the single player story? Don't get it."
One of the most successful indie games on the Switch is just that in Golf Story, and it's a game that clearly riffing on the developer's work that developed this game. It shouldn't exactly be a hard concept to get.
Hell even EA is putting rather large story modes and extensive single player content in their sports games these days.
This is sooorta my reaction to the news. From my understanding, Aces seems to have the best campaign since before the N64 entry. Having said that, I believe some of the marketing hyped up this story mode to something that it just wasn't (and by the looks of things, isn't) going to be, so disappointment for some isn't really unexpected (and is also understandable).Wasn't there only like one Mario tennis campaign that people like?
