Searched and didn't see a thread... But a new update is available now along with a new trailer

This update brings:
- Two new biomes.
- 1 new boss.
- 4 new unique enemies.
- 2 new runes.
- A reorganisation of the world.
- A complete reowk of the level up system.
- Stacks more
- patch notes: https://dead-cells.com/patchnotes/4

seems like a nice update. Haven't played the game for a bit but it's damn good and it's nice to see it continue to improve. Anyone tried the update?

More than this, they leave the fundamentals alone. Like fighting multiple enemies in a dungeon hallway, fiddling with a game's design requires a focus on what's important. Whereas I often panic and roll straight into the business end of an axe, the creators of Dead Cells seem to prioritise better. Here's hoping that continues until the game's slimey escape from the prison of early access.

I played a little bit through the beta branch and it feels pretty different. I've decided to just wait for the final release at this point though.

One of the best games of this type I have played and the devs keep improving it. People you owe it to yourselves to buy this game.

I played the crap out of this for a short while... and since then I've been too busy with other games. It's super fun, but became pretty easy after a while. I'd love to play it again, but at this point I think it's best to just wait until it's out of early access.

Played it early on the beta branch, brutal is the right word. Although I think they have toned it down (balanced) a little on the final release.

Damn addictive.

This is a good update. It has been through a series of adjustment with the way you build your character (stats and weapons scaling), but as of 0.4.4 it's in a good place again.
Can't wait to play what's next!

Well, since Chasm development is taking forever (yeah I know it takes time to make a game but still) I have been following this game since it's release on Steam.

I have been holding out on getting this until it release but damn it's getting harder now and the game is getting such good support.
There is monthly major update from what I see and it really look awesome .

Did they mention anything about the release date ?

Perfect moment to return to the game in my potato laptop! But seriously, its a pretty good game, and the pixel art is very nice.

having only played 10 hours previously, i updated to the new patch yesterday and jumped in. it feels more balanced to me - previously it felt kind of punishing. really like the new upgrade system, not sure it came with this patch or a previous one, but it adds a lot more flavour, and gives you more sense of progression.

the game still looks stunning and just feels wonderful with tight responsive controls. can see myself dropping a lot of hours into this.

Noice will update.

Did they adjust the levelup thing after they tested it in the beta? People were saying there was still no reason to not just upgrade strength again, which is why they changed the system in the first place.

Perma-death and starting all over from the beginning.

Dead Cells has progression in it, which stops it from feeling as punishing as some roguelikes. each loop you invest in unlocking new abilities, some which you'll start with in the next cycle, others that mean you'll find new weapons that weren't previously available as you play through the new level.

there's also a metroid like unlocking of areas gated by abilities. as you unlock these abilities you gain access to areas that were previously unavailable to you.

it's still definitely very much a roguelike/lite, but you definitely begin to feel more powerful each cycle, and so far for me it hasn't felt frustrating finding myself back at the beginning. death is progression i guess. i can totally grok why people wouldn't like that, but it does feel somewhat ameliorated by the feeling that you are getting stronger and stronger.

What he said for the most part. There is permadeath, but you only start back in the beginning, but not necessarily start over. For example, you start with not being able to heal, but unlock healing up to five times per floor. Same with unlocking new weapons. Those carry over through multiple plays. It can limit how far you get early on, but the more you play, the further you get.

Game is on sale now on Steam for $12.74 --- is it worth hopping in now while still in development? I've held out b/c I don't want a work-in-progress game and want to experience it complete and in all its glory. Is there an expected "finished" date on the horizon or will this just continue to get incremental updates throughout its lifetime, with no definitive release date?

It's probably still ~6 months out but I wouldn't expect this to be the kind of game that comes out and is "done". I would expect them to continue iterating and tweaking even after it comes out of early access. The game doesn't really have an end right now but it's also a run based game so the lack of a definitive end for a run is kinda moot. The vast majority of your runs wont approach the current end point.

That said I bought it when it came out I enjoyed my time and play it every so often now but I'm also waiting for a more substantial updates before getting into it again. Mostly because I have other games I can play.

Since its a roguelike, sounds like I can jump in and play a little bit at a time.

I mixed up this game and Hollow Knight initially, as both seemed to receive extremely high praise as metroidvania/souls-hybrid games. Is the combat similar to souls games? How does the combat compare to Hollow Knight and Salt & Sanctuary?

Love this game, if it comes to Switch, I don't think I'll ever get away. For those complaining about the challenge, try getting yourself cursed up and go for the harder lands earlier. It's more rewarding and the risk/reward is so good.

To me what defines Dark Souls is stamina management, being precise when timing attacks/evasion/parrying, and how it punishes mistakes. It lacks the first two, it doesn't have a stamina system and the combat is more loose since the game is more about getting through areas fast rather than cleanly. Though at the same time it has the third element where it's easy to overestimate your abilities on top of limited healing. It uses an estus like potion that you can refill before the the start of each level and it has a Bloodborne healing rally system where you can get back health you've recently lost as you damage enemies. The rally system gives you more room to sloppy and aggressive compared to the more methodical pace of Hollow Knight or Dark Souls.

Also again, Dead Cells isn't a Metroidvania. There is some persistence in that you can get abilities that let you access levels in earlier, but the levels are short and discrete with no backtracking between them. Even the abilities you get are more like keys than anything that modifies your traversal abilities. It's the difference between being able to make vines grow in predefined areas rather than a double jump in something like a Metroidvania.

The combat in this game is so satisfying - probably my favorite indie game of the year with Golf Story.

Thanks for the great rundown --- I'm sold. I just recently played Hollow Knight, and this sounds fresh enough from it to offer a nice, unique experience.

This game looks fantastic however, I wish I can get into rogue-like gameplay, but I just couldn't.
There are permanent upgrades wich make for a far better game compared to other roquelikes. It's really good imo and there is sense of progressions thanks to the pernament upgrades and runes that open up shortcuts or new places or give you new movements like wall jumping.

It's more like a roguelight. It's not as heavy like Enter the Gungeon or Binding of Isaac where you kinda completely start over without any upgrades at all.
