iOS12 and macOS Mojave were absolutely amazing - hitting most everything I wanted.

watchOS5 and tvOS were complete failures in my opinion.

watchOS really needs a face lift but I assume Apple Watch Series 1 is holding that back.

"series 0" got dropped with watchOS 5, and "series 1" runs the same CPU as series 2.

Does that mean the death of the majority of emulators on Macs as well? I remember OpenGL support being a factor as to why some of them were fairly reasonable despite a Windows/Linux focus for development.
As detuned radios said, I think 2D systems are fine, and Dolphin will be getting native metal support soon. I'm not sure what else supports macOS in the first place? Maybe Mupen64Plus?

I'm more concerned about native games, and Wine. Wine is a Linux-focused project and the result of 20 years (!) of development—I don't think they can just move to Metal. And while support can be hit or miss, Wine let's you play a lot of otherwise Windows-only games.

But more importantly, basically every game I own for macOS uses OpenGL. Tomb Raider 2013, Bioshock, Portal 2, Fez, Towerfall, World of Goo, To The Moon, Sportsfriends... the list goes on and on. Maybe some of them will get updated with Metal support, but I suspect the vast majority will not.

Apple's website doesn't say that OpenGL will get removed in a future update, however—just that it may get removed. I really hope they keep it in even if it never receives updates. They'd just be cutting off access to sooooo much software...

whoa, are you serious? control center will be like x on all phones? that's bullshit. what will bottom swipe do?

Well that's my assumption based on the rumour that all three will have no home button

Edit - I guess not on older phones - but maybe as an option? I hope they do it on iPad even though I have one with a home button. I just want consistency of behaviour where practical between my devices

Pretty happy with all the news except the lack of Dark Mode on iOS. Seems weird it wasn't shown off, unless maybe it's being saved for the fall with the new phone releases. Who knows.

Edit: the performance updates for old devices is great to hear. I hated how it was so apparent the newest version would have an impact on performance. Good for Apple to take the step to fix that issue.

I need to know what work Apple's Pro Workflow team & their Pro App Dev outreach team are doing, because no OpenGL and no OpenCL is gonna have huge implications for stuff like 3D apps.

I'm going to assume that they are fully aware of this and are providing assistance & foreknowledge to the makers of many pro apps so that Metal based versions of those apps are ready to go long-before 10.15 Mountain/Snow Mojave.

there are a pretty large number of sessions at WWDC this year specifically about moving from opengl/opencl to metal

I installed IOS 12 on my 6S and it feels crazy speedy. No bugs so far that I have noticed

Edit: installing watchOS atm

Apple has gone through massive API and architecture transitions in the past, I'm sure they will keep supporting OpenGL until major apps are ported.

Oh right, I still got my 5S. I'll use that as my iOS 12 dummy.
Will wait for first impressions on Mojave when I wake up tomorrow. Already got it downloaded just waiting to install.

debating if i'm brave enough to install mojave on my main machine. i'm on the 10.13.6 beta right now, but i've seen first betas of major macOS releases be pretty fucking rough.

Wow my Air 2 feels way faster with iOS 12. I was going to wait to put it on my phone but I might just do it.

The status bar is iPhone X style with time and date on the left and battery and WiFi on the right.

The control center no longer has the settings toggles, those are in the top right pull down.

Just don't do it.
I had the tendency to do that too on my main machine, but it's just not usable. Not even the public beta. Used to do it for the past 4 releases, but the weird shutdowns, heating up when a glitch happen causing the fans to go turbo were not worth it.

I'll just be waiting until Fall.

Does iOS 12 work on iPad Air 1? I don't even use it anymore as it's gotten pretty damn slow.

I wonder if iOS apps coming to macOS next year implies some large shift in thinking at Apple? I love my Surface Book 2 but still want a Mac laptop with pen support.

Yes, and it's supposed to increase performance for older devices like the Air 1

Interesting that pre-2012 machine support was mostly dropped. Didn't High Sierra support models from like 2009? Also an interesting contrast from iOS. That supports really old devices when compared to Android but macOS support requires relatively new machines when compared to what Windows can support.

I'm not even running High Sierra yet.

(I will be later this week, tho, I finally put an SSD in my 2011 MBP)

its not just a technical thing though, it's an incentivisation thing as well. Some might have been willing to assign resources when they could use cross platform aspects like OpenGL/CL but might decide the economics of doing metal versions isn't favourable to them. Apple will need to do some work to court / support them if need be.

Sorry I just mean it works like it is an iPhone X. Control centre or whatever it is called.

Also just discovered the swipe left/right after bringing up the dock switches apps like on iPhone X. I think that's new?

iPad with notch incoming?

Is this bold/italic/underline working with resetera text input new?

My friend said background Audio streaming was coming to WatchOS. Does this mean a Spotify app is on the way?

Spotify conquered the fan made, very promising watch app like two years ago and they haven't done shit with it to this very date. Don't even bother expecting anything from them.

That OpenGL deprecation is huge, especially for gaming. But I guess with all three major game engines supporting Metal now, it's really only people porting stuff from Windows (DX etc) that might have problems.

This makes no sense to me. Why are they enabling third-party password managers instead of Sherlocking one and rolling it into iOS natively? I mean if y'all trust some indie app company to protect your passwords, more power to you, but I consider it a security risk and I'm surprised Apple doesn't.

Uh. The Marzipan macOS apps use iOS alerts.

Gross. Hopefully that's just placeholder beta stuff.

I see no reason to use an Apple exclusive password manager over my way more robust and elaborate multiplatform 1Password solution and proper OS integration, which Android already offers, was long overdue.

Also, I don't think you are understanding the term "indie" correctly.

It DOES mean they now could if they were so inclined. So now it's Spotify's fault if they don't have a the ability to download songs to the watch, not Apple's

Er... they have one, it's called iCloud Keychain. Which has had QuickType integration for Safari for years and in apps for a year now, they're just extending that to popular password manager apps

State of the Union starting now!

1. I'm in the Apple ecosystem only, so I don't care about multiplatform and neither would Apple. Unless you mean Mac and iOS as separate platforms, which Apple already supports with iCloud Keychain.

2. I would not trust anyone besides Apple to protect the security of my data on device. The people at 1Password are well-meaning and work hard I'm sure, but they don't have the resources Apple does and they don't control the hardware and software stack.

Ooh wow, yeah bout time for a ssd. I have a 2011 MBP model too (17 inch) and put a ssd after 2 years. It's a life changer for daily use.
What old dinosaur do you use ;d (what model?).

which is why it's great that apple provides an option to integrate third party password managers for those who may want to do so and are not locked down within the Apple Ecosystem only.

I don't use X, why is X there?

Apple actively ignoring how horribly bloated and unintuitive iTunes is for yet another year is just crazy at this point. I finally ditched it completely for Spotify Premium and Overcast.

Early 2011 13" MBP 2.3, I updated the hard drive to a 7200rpm 750GB drive at some point, and now I went with a 1TB SSD to ride out its final days.

The battery is bulging and I'm getting that replaced tomorrow, hopefully it hasn't damaged the logic boards while it expanded.

I really use my mac mainly for Ableton Live/music stuff and do almost everything else on my iPad these days.

unless they were doing linux versions they probably wouldn't have been using opengl/cl anyway if not for the mac - most stuff on windows tends towards directx and cuda anyway (both, notably, also proprietary).

Looks like I'm out of luck with my early 2011 MBP. I would like to upgrade too but I was hoping for new Mac hardware that fixes those shitty butterfly keyboards. Oh well.
Just give it until the end of the year or something to see if anything's announced. High Sierra will continue to get security updates for a couple of years yet.

Installed iOS12 on my iPad Pro and it's surprisingly very fast. Performance is great, no slowdown or lag at all from iOS 11.4 in fact it seems noticeably faster. Usually the first developer betas are very janky and have all sorts of issues but this one feels very polished (so far). I'm probably going to put this on my main iPhone later tonight.

Screen Time is really nice and well fleshed out. Here's a few pics after couple minutes on iPad. I'm kind of afraid to learn how much time I spend on certain websites.

And the new UI for notifications is a lot easier to understand and cleaner looking.

Yeah, this is my plan for now. It's actually not too bad since I put in an SSD, it's quite snappy even, but what bothers me is how loud and hot it gets after streaming a minute of 720p video (even after cleaning the dust inside). Plus, it's heavy.
