I mean Apple does state that the X isn't expected to operate below 0°C (32° F) and this seems to be the norm for most phones as well as the S8: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00076952/

And different models have different reactions, despite all saying the same range. A lot of people's 5/5C/5S were fine in the cold, while the 6 series had a tendency to shut down while skiing

While my battery would drain faster at colder temperatures, I can honestly say that this wasn't a problem for me on an iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S, or 5. Since my city is below 0C for most of the year on average, this is a pretty substantial problem for me.

I'm hoping that it's something goofy and fixable in software, but right now I'm just glad I have AppleCare!

Damn hopefully this is just a software problem but from the way people are describing it on Reddit it doesn't look like it, if not I wonder if it's due to the conductivity of the user's fingers in the cold or the multi-touch sensor itself?

So is anyone brave enough to roll without a case?
I had intended to have been caseless since I got it but its actually hard to hold without one.

I did end up getting my replacement today (had some dust under the camera lens), which was significantly sooner than I was told yesterday. Been the roughest new phone experience I've ever had.

I actually noticed a tiny spec of dust both in my front camera and the back camera. I'm just going to live with it as I don't want to go through the ordeal of trying to get a perfect unit I'm just glad the screen is fine. The dust doesn't show up on photos either

I did a quick search on Twitter and it seems like dust in the back lenses is more common than you'd think

If you've got dust take that back. It could easily move over time. Mine hadn't showed on the actual photos but it was big and glaring. If you've got that go get it fixed.

I saw a guy on Macrumors said two of the replacements he got had the dust too. I find this very distressing for an allegedly dust proof phone.

yeah you see that's exactly what I don't wanna do, go through multiple units trying to get a perfect one. If it gets worse over time I'll switch it out perhaps when stock is better too but in a week I'll completely forget

The phones are dust proof but that doesn't mean it can't sneak in there when they're assembling them

Finally saw one of these in person today. It's pretty damn stunning. All my notch concerns pretty much faded away.

Thanks all for the suggestions with the Apple Watch 3 from 6S+ to the X.

I backed up the old phone to the cloud. Let the process link the phones and move everything... such a great process...

To be safe I unpaired the watch from the old phone and paired it to the new phone. It took maybe 5 minutes or so and it works exactly the same as it did on old phone.

The X really feels like an iPhone 7 or 8 to me... the longer and skinnier screen is nice but it feels so small compared to my 6S+... I am not liking yet, the form factor feels really to small to me.

I think dust under the camera lens is a much more significant issue than "wanting to find the perfect unit." But as long as you're pleased I'm not gonna argue.

I am in the same boat... that feeling is never going to go away. Wait until you get to an app that doesn't have X support.
Hopefully we'll get an X plus in the future.

Are apple leather cases worth it? They look nice but are $75 here in Australia

I would say yes; they fit like a glove, don't obstruct anything, have physical buttons, and don't self destruct over time like the soft cases do.

I would argue I prefer the phone grip without the case, but it does safely protect the glass back and even out the surface so you can put it down safely almost anywhere.

I had a really good experience with the silicon apple case on my 6+. over 3 years I used two cases, green and red. Very grippy and comfortable. The leather ones seem a bit too precious.

And as a Modern Buckle user I might have a bad opinion on Apple Leather.

How do you deal with all the pocket lint on the silicone cases? Is there something you do to lessen it/eliminate it?

It seems like I try one every year hoping for a different experience, but they all get covered in lint or other debris no matter what.

The buggiest part of iOS11 follows me onto my iPhone X: Now Playing widget on the lock screen and control center not updating with what is playing, it just defaults back to Music

I'm listening to Overcast right now and all it's offering me is the Music app

Hmm, I have to be honest not once was that an issue for me. Its not tacky at all.

I didn't pocket my phone, I kept it in my bag. But that phone saw every permutation of use over the three years I had it and not once did I find the silicon case to be tacky.

My wife had a similar experience since she kept her phone in her purse. I put my phone in my bag during the workday and it's generally OK, but all other times it has to go in my pocket which yields unsightly pocket lint galore. I'm not the type of person who can ignore it, either. :^\

Man! Weird/Gross!

Is it like big lint pieces or a fuzz texture? Lint is one of my most hated things. Blech.

Glad I'm not the only one. It's finer lint, like fabric particles. Frankly, bigger pieces wouldn't bother me as much since they'd be easier to remove.

This happens to me in my work clothes (suit, usually) and regular clothes (jeans, usually).

so phonebuff finally did their speedtest. results are similar to other ones. what's interesting is that ios apps reloaded on round 2, which like never happens with other iphones. I'm feeling them app reloads myself....

anyone here on the 11.2 beta? is it any better at memory management? I don't feel like i've felt apps reload this much since my iphone 6+ which the 1gb of ram was clearly too little... that phone kinda ran like ass from day 1 until I got fed up with it and went android lol.

Funny, before reading any of these comments, I noticed a serious issue texting in the cold yesterday. Was waiting in line for my rental car in Philly, and it was cold - but not freezing - maybe low 40s Fahrenheit? Anyway, typing was basically impossible. That said, almost the moment I stepped inside, everything instantly statrted working again.

I've opened every iPhone except the 3G and 4, and had never run into such an issue in much harsher temperatures.

EDIT: Also noticing a lot of app refreshing; and agree that in "modern iPhone times" only the 6 has been really awful with that.

Wonder if this is an OLED thing? Or quality control issues to meet production? I mean they can't seriously expect people to not use their phones outside during the winter.

After a lot of confusion and back-and-forth between AT&T and Apple over some conflict/glitch in my upgrade eligibility, I was finally able to order a phone for pick up tomorrow evening. :/

On the bright side this gave me time to reconsider getting a 256GB model and save a few dollars a month. I have 128GB now and after deleting some old videos I already had backed up I'm only using about 35GB, 20 of which is just music I have saved. So 256GB just seems it'd be major overkill.

I like to go caseless for a month when I get a new phone until the novelty wears off, but I'll have to read through the thread to see what others are recommending.

Cases make my head hurt. I want to go naked because the phone looks nice. But even with AC+ I want to protect while I'm out and about. But even clear cases are fairly ugly - they make the silver back look a dull grey, and cover up the edges too much. The saddle brown leather is a nice fit, but then you don't have a silver phone anymore, you have a brown one. Caudabe is ok but no lip on mine which is a no-no for me (they are looking to adjust the design so fingers crossed)

I might keep opaque cases for when I'm in the mood for a change of look, but the apple case is a lot of money to keep around for occasional duty.. not sure.

My phone comes in today. I have apple care+ purchased but I'm hearing that the cost to repair is ridiculous. Can I reamoce Apple care before I activate my phone?

Reeder was updated for iPhone X and it has a new (optional) pure black theme which looks incredibly sexy on the OLED display. The notch and bezels blend right into the background essentially making the hardware entirely invisible. It's a cool effect.

Kinda weird that it wasn't even mentioned in the release notes, I guess because it goes against Apple's UI guidelines.

The cost to repair is ridiculous without AppleCare+, not with it. Are you sure you're not looking at the total cost including the cost of Apple care ?

Screen replacement with AC+: $29
Any other damage: $99

Screen replacement without AC+: $279
Any other damage: $549

Keep the AppleCare is my advice

Ive been mulling over whether I should stay with my current phone insurance or switch to Applecare. Think I'm going to stay with the currency one. It's a little bit more over all (about £30 more over two years) and has a flat rate of £129 for all replacements but it also covers theft so I think Im just going to eat that cost for peace of mind (and hope if I break my phone it's a full breakage and not just screen, so the excess charge isn't that much higher than applecares...)

People have been saying that entering your passcode is way better for faceID rather than adjusting your face since it'll add it to the data set. I need to start doing that.
