Admittedly I don't see as many movies as I used to but he's been solid or great I'm everything I've seen him in, even lighter fare like Are We Officially Dating.

What cinemas were you people watching in?

You're talking about the scene where he rescues Nakia right? I didn't have any issues making out what was happening .
I could not make out a single thing in this scene. I was flabbergasted that it even existed, it was so incoherent. It definitely couldv'e been an overly dark screen, but I saw it in 2D. I though the action was poorly shot throughout, even when technically visible though. The entire final battle with the rhinos and shields felt like the cheap CGI from the Naboo battle in Phantom Menace to me.

Just saw it and it was very good! Top 3 MCU probably for me. It was my favorite up until the last act or so where it felt kind of rushed.

Killmonger was definitely a good villain, but he really could have been Dark Knight Joker level if they spent a bit more time on him and gave him a better plan than just "give everyone guns". Overall all the characters were really good though, and the album is probably the best of any super hero movie. Didn't really have any problems with the CG either, other than really the rhinos.

I share the same sentiment. It's not my top 3, but probably in the top 5-6 range. It would've cracked top 3 if the last act was as strong as the first-half, but unfortunately I felt like most of the movie after the Herb Burning scene was nowhere near as strong as the opening and middle section.

I thought the giving guns to everyone was fine because like father, like son.

But Coogler is certainly no, say James Gunn, in terms of mechanics. You compare BP to either of the Guardians films in term of pure directing "mechanics" and its not really that close. But the things Coogler excels at, he is Incredible at.

i agree with this, the fight scenes in civil war with BP were way better than the movie of the same name and it probably had to do with directors shooting/editing it differently. would like to see the fight scenes side by side to compare. The winter soldier fight scenes + civil war apartment fight scene are still in a class of their own

lol, dude's a psychotic Afrikaaner nutbag. That said, he seemed to work just fine with Killmonger and he had black guys in his crew, right? Maybe he just hated Wakandans only and otherwise was an equal-opportunity asshole to everyone. But yeah, he was a racist fuck

Serkis was hilarious tho.
You mean it wasn't obvious to you when he called them savages multiple times?

The thing is Panther has a lot of issues if you want to nitpick from a post prodution stand point. Lighting is weird in some scenes, CG is rough, and some other little issues. The thing is BP's strengths are so strong they overcome these sorts of things.

It's a little unfair to compare Coogler to Gunn tho. Gunn is older and more seasoned. I give Coogler a pass considering he is only 3 films deep and this is first big foray into big budget action cinema. Hopefully, he'll improve if he decides to do the sequel.

I just realized that Wakanda and Wonder Woman crossed arm sign are the same. Though usually people doing the Wonder Woman symbol are wearing the armlets.

I've been so conditioned by movies where heroes are only beat down due to a handicap (kryptonite, poison, foul play etc) that I was shocked that it was never revealed that Killmonger was on some secret CIA juice or something.

Nah, he just beat T'Challa's ass fair and square.

Oh no doubt, and I think Panther is a top tier film in general. I'm not trying to knock Coogler at all. He's only 31 and has a long bright future ahead of him.

I'm just saying he's still not on the technical level of say a James Gunn. He's got a ton of skill and the things he's good at he's DAMN good at. Just if we want to be nitpicky we can see where his faults are.

As a matter of fact T'Challa isn't very impressive when he's off the juice. Gets stabbed in all his unenhanced fights.

It was overly dark and that's far too common of a complaint to be an outlier.

You may have seen it ok, but the scene was clearly not lit well enough / handled right in post production
Or theater owners need to replace their bulbs. I saw it at an AMC that is part of one of the larger malls in the U.S., so they are constantly changeing them. I had no issue following the action in that scene. But in my years Ive been to other theaters where the bulbs have needed a change.

That logic is the exact same with or without the stone
One of them is a magic rock that can do anything the user wishes. The other is a resource that had to be learned about, studied, shaped, technology has to be invented to both use it and refine it. I think it's a lot more meaningful if Wakanda became great just from Vibranium than if they had the Soul Stone.

One thing that just came to my mind is that Killmongers plan is pretty flawed in the way that he doesn't account or even mention the Avengers or other superheroes that may lay in wait around the world to come for him eventually.

So in that sense hes basically a poor mans Vulture.

When they can blow up a tank with a small pistol-sized gun, just wait for when they bring out the big guns. Not even a Hulk could withstand.

Well the Soul Stone in this suggested case is merely meant to be the thing that makes the vibranium, and maybe causes the heart shaped herb, rather than anything that gave Wakandans the knowledge to use either.

Also something I thought on last night was the realisation that T'Chaka may have seen the events in the first act of Civil War as his chance to begin atoning for his brother's death all those years ago. Then Zemo ensures that will never come to fruition.

I've seen this twice now and really want to see it a third time.

It's so damn good, everything I think to pick apart just fades away when I think about the strengths it has.

Maybe, but only until Tony comes around with a Vibranium suit made of all the weapons he collected from thugs.

...A Vibranium Iron Man suit is totally happening in Infinity War or the sequel, isn't it?

Wakanda is going to be the sole thing keeping Earth from being destroyed in seconds by Thanos

That and Tony's defenses I guess

Yeah, I feel Tony will become evil if he gets his hands on Wakanda tech and knowledge. Superior Iron Man type evil. That would be the perfect time for Robert to exit the MCU. The whole Superior Iron Man story, charging people to look beautiful.

Booked a second viewing as my mum wants to see the movie (had loved marvel since Guardians) and the theatre is pretty much all booked up. Not sure I've seen that since avengers.

Beautiful how this movie is being embraced.

Doesn't Tony's armour go on similar to Black Panther's suit in the latest IW trailer? I'm guessing T'Challa and Stark will be working together on Earth's defences.

It's just gonna be Shuri laughing at how primitive Tony's tech and methodology is. It will be nice to see him get outmatched for once.

Well if hes outmatched its only because he has no Vibranium. Other than that I didn't see anything in Black Panther that wasn't comparable to the stuff Tony had in his latest entries, bar the medical stuff maybe because Tony doesn't research those things.

Come to think of it I really would want to see a short movie or the like just with Tony and Shuri talking about tech stuff and trying to impress each other.

Good point. By the time Infinity War happens there could already be some scientific exchange between Tony and Wakanda.
Depends if they go the comic route and Tony creates bleeding edge himself.

Would love a scene of Stark and Shuri working together on it. You know, for when she becomes Iron Heart in Phase 4...

Would have great banter as well.

Lol @ people saying James Gunn is better at technical directing (whatever that means) than Coogler. Did we watch a different GotG1? That had ass-tier action too, and everything with Rohan in it was an embarrassment except for the dance off at the end. Gunn is great at comedy but when he first stepped into a blockbuster he couldn't do action for shit either. Both GotG and BP were carried by the passions of the directors and the amazing job the production design crew did. Not the action and cinematography. BP actually beats GotG in the camera department for the most part because GotG had some really boring cinematography for such a great looking universe.

So I've been thinking about this on and off since the film... if Wakanda is really regarded as a poor ass third world country with texile exports and nothing else like what Ross described in BP, why the hell is the King of Wakanda considered important enough to be a major factor during the Accords in Civil War. He was respected and known, but for.... what? That's not how world politics work! And no one asked any questions about how a dirt poor country had a cat superhero who could jump off rooftops and outrun cars? Really? MCU is ruined by this terrible plothole. How can I take Infinity War seriously now?! :)

He needed to also upstage the king when he returned. It's part of his destabilization tactic.

Yet another thing they explain in the movie man.

Bingo.

In fact, Ross specifically mentions that Kilmonger's MO is to attack countries with those destablizing tactics during an election year or any other transfer of power.

What was happening in Wakanda of compatible significance in this film?

Right.

Yeah, things started to teeter when they went into the mountains - that segment everything seemed weaker, from editing to sets to performances. M'Baku saved it but it felt like it was scooped out of a weaker film. The battle really had some great moments but the editing and effects creaked a bit there too. Felt rushed.

To be fair, GotG barely had any hand to hand combat and all the other stuff like the space battles were top notch.

I don't remember it clearly but I don't think Wakanda had any myor saying in the Sokovia Accords, they were just there because it was a worldwide meeting and T'Chaka happened to have a speech when the bomb went off. It's not like countries are denied speaking at the UN just because they're small.

Also the movie already indirectly answered why nobody did wonder where the Black Panther suit came from. When Ross interrogates Klaue it is mentioned that the CIA thought Klaue stole every single bit of Vibranium Wakanda had, so I would presume they just assumed the Black Panther suit was made out of all the Vibranium the country had left and there is nothing more of interest in the country.

Also with how many superheroes popped up during that time and a literal clash of superheroes going on in Civil War I can imagine Black Panther going kind of under the radar.

CIA did not know if the BP suit was made of Vibranium.
TBh all the stuff with Klaue beeing in AoU and BP beeing in Civil War doesnt work 100% perfect together with this movie.

The attack at the start of Civil War that lead to SW fucking up killed a group of Wakandan delegates so they had a lot to do with discussing the accords. That was the big news at the time, hence why he gave a speech and was discussing it. Also, the bomb was just during his speech, he could of been one of fifty national leaders speaking.
