Oh God the new boss theme is just...bleagh.

Original - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0IJPzf4mO0
HD - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVi0kP3pZ2I
How the HD version sounds to me - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGJbuHUbw8k

Secret of Mana's original soundtrack was perfect. I knew the HD edition's wouldn't stack up, but good lord, it's not even listenable at times.

I like this track though - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlicjJHRS1A&list=PL0JUbdF--Lfg_c8jOsvgDny3cFkiT-qZN&index=13

I've got a whole post with my thoughts as I go through the soundtrack on the last page. Did You See the Ocean is one of the few surprises that legitimately thinking, "Well, they did a pretty good job on this one."

I also really like Fond Memories. I think it's elevated beyond the original, especially when 1:32 kicks in,

I thought I heard somewhere that the HD edition's soundtrack was done by multiple guest composers. Something about 'Did You See the Ocean' sounds very familiar to me.

What the fuck have they done to this game. That HD version is appalling.

Called GameStop and they had one left not for pre-orders and dude held it for me. Bless him.
Secret of Mana makes me do stupid things, like buy shoddy remakes. That being said, I can't wait to dive in and check it out, if for nothing else than the new translation and trying without the chain magic.

It's apparent after just a few hours that the negativity towards this is pretty absurd. It's a lot of fun. Love the new inn skits. Lots of fun dialog with some character building that was nearly completely absent in the original.

I've heard some complaints about aspects of the weapons in this that I don't really agree with. One of the early review said it was harder to aim ranged weapons, which is kind of true to an extent, you need to take more care to be facing the right direction before you shoot now, but the reviewer didn't mention the VERY generous aim assist that basically seeks enemies in a cone in front of you.

Someone last page was complaining about the Spear having a slower animation now. It does have a bit more windup on the swing, but I'll respond to that by saying that all the weapons I've used so far feel way more unique now than they did in the original. Like the spear is a millisecond slower, but the tradeoff is the attack ranges it hits are a lot farther or wider than the sword depending on whether or not you do the swing or thrust. Axe is even slower than the spear (it was a bit slower on SNES too) but has a real wide sweeping arc in this one. The axe was so bad in the original because it had a tiny hitbox. The hitbox here seems way more massive.

In the original game my setup was ALWAYS Randi using sword/spear/axe depending on what was needed for traversal (cutting rocks, bushes etc) and then having Purim and Popoi using the whip and boomerang to keep them at range and the bow and javelin were "useless" because they could only hit single targets but otherwise behaved exactly the same. Having only the bow and boomerang for ranged weapons so far I see more of these tradeoffs that make the melee weapons feel more unique. The boomerang, like the spear has a longer animation but the tradeoff is it can hit multiple enemies. The bow still only hits 1 target but fires way faster and is super reliable killing different elevations (like around the ledges of Gaia's Navel). Looks like it might reach a couple pixels farther too, but don't quote me on that. Can't wait to feel what the whip and javelin are like now. I don't think I've ever used the javelin in this game longer than it took me to max its level on my original 100% save.

Don't give in to the negativity guys. Flaws aside there's a lot of fun to be had here especially if you've played the original a whole bunch like me and want a new way to play thru this!

Just played both the SNES and remake versions back to back and I'll say gameplay wise, this game is better because it's more fluid and you have a wider range of vision which helps out a lot.

That said, I think combat in this series even with the SNES game is just flawed and feels delayed and I don't like how moves just hit you even if you are not near the enemy. It's faithful to the original game and a little better gameplay wise, but I really don't care for this game original or not.

Game is definitely not bad. Though it's not too far above average either... it's still a good little nostalgia trip. There are some issues (some music, which can be switched back to normal) and I mean... it's not going to blow your fucking MIND or anything. It really is just Secret of Mana in 3D with voice acting. The visuals aren't as bad as people are currently claiming, either. The only thing really bad with the visuals are the fact that their mouths don't move when they talk and the fact that there is maybe 8-9 character model varities recolored in each town.

His name is Randi? Well alright.
Yep, that has always been his canon name.

How would you say the remake compares to the original for someone who doesn't have nostalgia for the latter? Which should I play, as a newcomer?

Was on the fence about getting, but the girlfriend expressed interest in playing together so I went into GameStop and picked up a copy.

I honestly don't have any nostalgia for the 16 bit art style of this game and I think the 3D models look fine.
I think they did a pretty good job translating the look the pixel art was trying to communicate into a low poly 3D style.

However it's definitely awkward when their mouths don't move when they speak.

At this point I would say look at screen shots of both and make up your mind based just on which graphical style appeals to you more since that's the biggest difference between the 2.

I'd be more concerned with the localization (I know the SNES one has a substantial amount cut out due to text formatting limitations) and the gameplay. Are those both equal or better in the remake?

Haven't played far enough into the remake yet to render a final verdict on the full story localization but the main story beat dialog doesn't seem much more fleshed out than it was in the original to be honest. You won't find a War of the Lions style update or anything like that. NPCs are still pretty brief and utilitarian with dialog. The main benefit in that department is the inn skits, which I'm really liking. There's a lot of bratty anime 'tude and goofin on Randi that wasn't really apparent in the first game. So if that sounds like your thing maybe the remake would be better.

Gameplay is a wash both way so far. Marginally more nuance in the weapons in the remake, but aside from nitpicking they both play totally fine and most of the nitpicks people have about the combat applies to both versions.

Played a little bit just to see how it feels. As someone who first experienced Secret of Mana with the SNES Classic last year, this version plays noticeably better than the original and the translation is far better. I did switch the music back to the original though, not a fan of the remixed tracks. I don't mind the visuals either, but I liked how Adventure of Mana looked on Vita as well.

I deny to think that the gameplay of the remake is worse than the original games as Kotaku said.

I mean, it's impossible, the gameplay of the SNES version aged really bad and has terrible hitbox issues.

Got it, the new music is a bit hit and miss, some of the remixes are pretty cool actually, I like the Pandora one and the boss music the most so far. Nice that you can switch on the fly. Also nice that they resampled the original music too, it sounds extremely clean.

Apart from that, I love it! My only gripe is how the deadzones suck a bit so sometimes the menus get stuck scrolling left because my 360 controller registers the bare minimum of left movement on the stick lol. Not a huge issue though! I like the artstyle too, it's really cute, in a more perfect world they'd be even closer to the sweet clay models they made for the manual art, but it's fairly close.

As an enormous fan of the series—and especially the original Secret of Mana—I'll be...replaying the original on my new Super NT.

I hate to be that guy, but this one hurts. Square Enix need only look at its own Tactics Ogre PSP remake and the more recent Romancing Saga 2 (or even the Final Fantasy IV PSP remaster) to see how these things should be done.
If really hope they don't stoop to desecrating Seiken Densetsu 3 like this.

I wonder how they handled the localization in the remake. I haven't started it up yet but I am curious how the dialog flow is.

For example in the original game the cannon transport gave you three choices and didn't tell you the destination.

mana5.gif

FuSoYa when making a variable width font for the which allowed for expanded dialog. There was a lot of shortcuts made in the original title.

mana6.gif

Especially curt sentences which if you talked to other NPCs gave them extra context but on their own didn't provide much.

mana7.gif
mana8.gif

Graphics and Audio complaints aside, one of my main reasons for picking up the remake is seeing how Square-Enix handled their own take on the games dialog and localization. They definitely don't have the same limitations with this remake that Woolsey had to work around with the original release.

For those playing it on PC, resolution is completely broken, seems like 720p all the time even if you turn it to 4K.

And btw it only let me change the resolution when i'm on windowed mode.

There's no overworld animation when you cannon travel... This might be the only legitimate detraction I can think of in this game and of course all the negative reviews didn't mention it, instead wasting so much word count on shit like the bad music WHICH YOU CAN TURN OFF IF YOU DONT LIKE IT YOU WHINYBABIES. I CANT TURN ON MY CANNON TRAVEL ANIMATOIOAGHNIKDH JHAFHHHHAFHGGGGF!!!!!!!

I grabbed the Vita version because it was only $30 but I'm frustrated with how sloppy this is. Framerate is very choppy and there's some input lag. I warmed up to the remixing/low-fi 3D, but the minimal effort programming above all makes me shocked they want as much as $40 for this. Very aggravating.

Played about an hour. Music to SNES, voices in English because my 6 year old actually took interest as I started it. Just got the sprite and we're all in.

I showed her the SNES classic version but she said she likes the new one better... either way, it's always good to have a co-op partner and hopefully she'll enjoy the game as much as I have in the past.

Edit: Ooh, the light bar changes depending on the character

Can I ever expect a remake of the infinitely superior (IMO) Secret of Evermore?

...I purchased this anyway. It was still a great game back in the day.

I preferred Mana, but Evermore getting a remake would be awesome IMO. Also, really glad they use the canon names in this, Primm is such a pretty name I always thought.

It sure is nice being able to dash freely instead of in straight lines! Haven't noticed anything bad/different about the updated music yet so I'm leaving it on. Stupid circle menus are as annoying to navigate as ever. Really wish they had updated the menus to something that doesn't bite!

Staying at inns at different points of the game unlock new character dialogue interaction. Not sure if you have to be at a specific inn for it to happen tho.

Is it that bad? I was considering picking up the Vita port.

Currently playing it on PS4 Pro. Appears to be 4K60, unless you are in cutscenes, which run at 30 fps. If it isn't true 4K then it certainly looks close enough to me.

How do I save in the game? I'm playing the Vita version of that makes an difference.

Either in a INN or a merchant traveler.
