I wonder if Mercedes will come with a band new team or if they'll take over Venturi. That would be sad, cuz Venturi has one of the best liveries in Formula E in my opinion.

Rosberg would really return to racing with Formula E? I really don't understand the guy. I mean I know Formula E is less stressful and time consuming than Formula 1, but still...

Does Formula E have a maximum grid size?
Yes. Current grid (Ten teams, 20 cars) + Mercedes and Porsche (4 cars from Season 6). It is crowded enough :P

If Mercedes or better said HWA decides to enter next season with interim car, they will take two grid spots reserved for Mercedes. That means that team would rename into official Mercedes F-E team for S6

All electric Rallycross championship could actually be interesting, they don't drive over long distances so they can give them a lot of power (plus some for the loud exhaust speakers so they don't sound like vacuums ;)).

Why do modern LMP1 liveries always look like they randomly sploshed three colours and called it a day.

You could easily do something fun and compelling to look at with all that surface area.

Looks like McLaren are going to announce Dell as a major sponsor

McLaren has announced American-based multinational computer company Dell Technologies as a new sponsor for the 2018 Formula 1 season.
The deal, which was confirmed on Thursday, will see the manufacturer of PCs, computer servers and TVs supply both hardware and software to the F1 team and its Applied Technologies division.

"McLaren is delighted to announce a multi-faceted, long-term partnership with Dell Technologies, the world's largest privately-controlled technology company," the team's statement read.

"Dell Technologies, which consists of seven global brands – Dell, Dell EMC, Pivotal, RSA, Secureworks, Virtustream and VMware – will bring its deep technology expertise to all McLaren Technology Group companies, including McLaren Racing and McLaren Applied Technologies, as well as benefitting McLaren's esports programme, World's Fastest Gamer.

"The partnership will seamlessly integrate Dell Technologies' wide-ranging platform of solutions into McLaren's day-to-day operations, including support for design and manufacturing, trackside operations, telemetry, safety-critical ecosystems, storage, esports and simulation, fan engagement and guest experience."

Scott Dixon is testing it today at the Phoenix oval in variable lighting conditions. Video will come out soon enough.

PPG made it out of a different proprietary material that's supposedly stronger than what F1 tested. IIRC it's used in commercial aviation and in fighter jet canopies.

Dixon completed half a dozen laps in the initial run, which was intended to test the 0.4-inch thick windscreen's performance in bright light. The second and third runs will be carried out later today at dusk, and then in darkness.

"No show-stoppers," said Dixon after climbing from the car. "It's a little bit different, looking through something that is so thick. I thought it would have messed with distortion a lot more, but there's nothing like that; no problems with reflection.

Obviously we'll run a little bit later to see how it is in a more dusk setting, and then again tonight. But the weirdest thing is just how quiet it is – you don't have any buffeting; the car is very smooth, like you've gone to a really luxurious, dampened car.
The prototype incorporates several design changes that arouse during simulator testing, in particular the extension of the side of the windscreen along the full length of the cockpit. This, Dixon said, appears to have eliminated the field of vision problems that had been a source of potential concern.

"Early on there was more of that, where the screen stopped short and your peripheral vision sort of went through it," he said. "I think for some of the guys in the sim that was a little bit of an issue – when you're trying to get close to walls, you couldn't really feel how wide the car was or where you were. But obviously they extended that, and made provisions to fix that issue. You're looking through quite a substantial piece of material, and it just takes your eyes a bit of time to adjust to how you look through it."

Reflection was also a non-issue, with Dixon suggesting that the screen actually helped to reduce glare that was normally created by the visor and tear-offs. But many of the question marks over the viability of the device can only be answered with more testing. One that Dixon raised following his initial run was whether distortion will continue to be a non-factor when the windscreen is tested on a road or street course.

I don't really mind the halo but I think that IndyCar screen is better. Though now the FIA's backed the halo hard I'd be surprised if we saw a switch in F1 anytime soon.

All we know is that the material used is proprietary and supposedly stronger than the one used in the Shield. There's still a lot of testing to be done. IndyCar is looking at implementation near the end of the 2018 season at the earliest.

Oh, I didn't know the shield was coming so late to Indy. Then I get the complaints about not using it in F1 even less.

I also looked up the statement Vettel made after the test and it wasn't only dizziness he reported.

"I don't think I need to talk about the pros. Obviously I know what it's for," said Vettel. "Cons: I tried it this morning, I got a bit dizzy.
"Forward vision is not very good," he added. "I think it's because of the curvature. You get quite a bit of distortion.
"You get quite a bit of downwash down the straights pushing the helmet forward," he said.
"We had a run planned with it but I didn't like it so we took it off."

Pat Symmons added to that

"What he's describing is air spilling over and into the cockpit," he said, adding that CFD simulations last year had hinted at potential issues.
"We did see an awful lot of effect not just on the driver but on the engine inlet, on the rear wing, things like that," he said.
"I keep going on about aerodynamics, but we can't forget the aerodynamics on a Formula 1 car.
"This is really quite an immature technology that we're talking about."

I hope we'll see further testing of different prototypes throughout the season. But yeah, saying they should've just implemented the shield over the Halo seems a little silly.

And what do you think FiA's development budget is in relation to IndyCar? 50x? 100x?

They got locked onto the halo idea and didn't fully vet the shield concept. There's no question about it.

Watching that IndyCar video made me feel physically weird so I can kinda get what Vettel was saying.
Still looks way better than the halo though.

The actual camera in that video is above eye level at the top of the visor. Dixon said he didn't experience anything like that. Of course they still have to test it on a street/road course, but so far it's a great start.

I'm only half way through EP1 so far, no drama yet, but it's a fascinating insight into aspects of F1 and the company, it does seem to jump about a bit though, not really telling a story.

This is why it's hard to just tolerate the halo. It looks fucking dumb and is certainly less safe than using a full screen like this. FIA rushed a band aid through while a less popular/funded series like Indycar potentially does it better.

Because people died. And they kind of wanted a thing there to make them not die. They can always change to another solution later, they can't not do a thing because people complain that it is ugly and then explain to the next Wilson or Surtees's parents why their kid is now dead while that could have been avoided by an existing solution they purposely did not implement.

Yep, I understand that. I'm just perplexed by the timing. If you do it, go for it - but do it as soon as it's feasible. It's been over 2 years since Wilson's death, and 9 years since Surtees death. If they had addressed it after Surtees death, then may be Wilson would be with his parents now.

My thoughts on the McLaren documentary on Prime:

I found this very difficult to watch. Some good bits but overall it just felt like propaganda issued by McLaren to make sure the world knew that Honda were solely responsible for their demise. Their agenda was clear from the offset and wasn't a tale of the time - more a retrospective at how bad Honda was.

I didn't really enjoy it.
