I'd recommend watching Saikano to anyone wishing to uplift his spirit after watching Devilman Crybaby. I'd also recommend Grave of the Fireflies if you'd rather watch a movie.

I think I need something light hearted and bubbly to perk my spirits. Any recommendations?
Little Witch Academia is pretty good for that, also on Netflix. But Fate/Apocrypha (also on Netflix!!!) did the job for me because while it isn't light hearted or bubbly, it's so stupid, generic, and action packed that I could shut my brain off and just enjoy it for what it is without reflecting and thinking like with Devilman.

I never heard of Devilman until tonight and just watched the first ep. I'm totally in for the rest of the episodes. It'll be interesting to read through this topic once I'm through with it.

After I marathon Devilman: Crybaby this weekend, and while I loved it, it was a brutal, unfiltered series.

I watched Redline after it and it raised my spirits subsequently. Most things Ghibli are pretty good too. I almost watched Whisper of the Heart too, but decided with stupid and fun over heartfelt and thoughtful.

Does is stay faithful to the original Manga?
specifically I really want to learn if it show in TV Demons killing babies openly in the final act

I want to learn this, because I respect the "honesty" it shows. It doesn't sugar coat the reality of a situation like this.

Well, I don't remember any babies being killed, but you can be sure that there is no sugar-coating in this show

With that said. I'm incredibly impressed by this show.

In a year with MHA S3, OPM S2, maybe Jojo Part 5 and many more interesting shows, this totally came out of nowhere and became one of my favorite anime.

It also pushed me to try Berserk. Manga or Anime?

I wish this had been 26 episodes, the deaths would have been even more of a gut punch with a bit more character development. Also Devilcat needed more screen time!

Its very faithful while being its own thing. I don't remember the spoiler being in the manga, though it could be in the other Devilman media.

By far try Berserk Manga. By far you can see the whole tragedy of Guts uncut.
However you must tolerate years which the series didn't end yet at some point.

I started with the 90's anime which is a must watch IMO. Though its incomplete and the manga is better for the long term.

If you can, read the manga but the anime series from 97 is also very good if on the lower budget side of things.

You're in luck - an excellent movie trilogy (with occasionally dodgy cg) that covers the events of the anime series is currently on Netflix. Against all odds, the dub is actually really good, too.

They're ok and get better as they go on but I don't think I'd call them excellent as they cut out A TON of stuff including a huge amount of Guts' past and entire plot lines and characters. Its basically the cliff notes version of the Golden Age arc that only touches on the absolute most important parts and basically ignores everything in between.

I haven't stopped thinking about this series since I watched it the day after it came out. It stuck with me.

I was a fan of the old OVAs, but this topped them by far and then some!
The ending, OMFG!!!
Best anime short series in like... forever!

So I heard about this and looked it up.

While I'm glad Netflix is getting a wide variety of anime this just sounds way to depressing for me. Is there anything similar but maybe a little less soul crushing?

Ew, no. The movies cut out WAY too much material and rush like crazy. Please avoid the movies until you read the manga.

Nightbird

In terms of what's good in Berserk and what isn't:

1. Manga - Just read the manga, none of the other things come close, at all. If you watch the movies you'll ruin the emotional attachment and bond you're supposed to have with people.

2. 90s Anime - It hasn't aged well, and changed some story beats in the first and final episodes, but so far, it's *by far* the most accurate adaptation of Berserk there is. That, and it has a wonderful, melancholic OST.

3. The movies - A very, very, VERY distant third. They rush through a lot of important things and let character development fall by the wayside just to animate a certain part of the third movie in a more explicitly long fashion - Watch them if you want more Berserk after you're done with the Manga and TV.

4. the recent TV shows. Screw those. Don't touch them.

Honourable mention: The Dreamcast game. An original story by Miura himself. It's state in canon hasn't been defined, but it still kind of sort of fits.

Berserk is inspired from this and kind of similiar. Soul crushing but not on the level of this.

Devil man is unique though. So it would be hard to find something like it. I am going to watch Devil Man Lady soon and it might be less dark and sad.

I don't read Manga at all, but I did read Berserk. Absolutely go with the Manga and, tip from me, listen to the absolutely amazing OST from the 90s Anime.

Oh god, don't go for Berserk, I have no idea why someone would recommend that as something "less soul crushing". Maybe go for Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood if you haven't yet? There isn't really anything similiar to Devilman: Crybaby right now, that's one of the main draws of the show.

You! I like you! You're good people! That OST is sooooo good. Especially the ending theme and Ghosts. So moody, melancholic and perfect!

I wouldn't call Berserk inspired by Devilman. Berserk is dark fantasy, mostly based on the dark ages in Europe, with most of its designs coming from there. Sure, some of the Apostles are kind of Devilman-y, but I don't feel confident saying that Miura took inspiration from Devilman.

The Berserk manga is also available digitally as well after like a decade of not being so. Its expensive though so its best to wait for those occasional half off sales that happen on Comixology.

Miura's talked about the influence of Devilman and Go Nagai on his work though there are a lot of influences on Berserk like Guin Saga

Are you looking forward to Mazinger Infinite?

I just learned that this is a thing... Looks like an adaptation/continuation of Shin Mazinger Zero?

I'm still wishing for Imagawa's Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Great-Hen... But I guess that one's dead in the water.

Well then, I'll take my crow well done with Ketchup. Speaking of Guin Saga, are the book translations dead, or is there still a publisher working on them?

Yeah.
I probably should have worded it better but I meant interms of the apostles and the god hand, the bleaknes of the world etc.

Berserk itself is very different when compared to Devil Man as its characters is much more realistic. And it never really gets as light hearted as Devil Man before the second part.

It was less soul crushing to me
as there was still hope since Guts and Casca still lives while in Devilman there is nothing. everybody dies, the end.

I continued watching the series and I'm happy to say it's great. I was a little apprehensive after the first episode because it felt like too much, but after you ease into what it's trying to do, there are moments of brilliance. It's fucked up but in a good way.

I'm on the last few episodes. I'll probably post more detailed thoughts later.

Yeah this series was awesome. I don't have time for long and winded shonens anymore and the brutality and honesty that was on display here had me shook. A depressing show in a good way!

I thought it was ok.

Soundtrack was dope, but the ending and messages didn't hit me.

I think I am just desensitized to the "humans are garbage" message in general because I'm just kinda used to it.

I'm pretty much on the same page, myself. It was a very plot-driven show, and I was hoping for more characterization to make it more interesting. It was excellently done for 10 episodes, but I would have totally loved 20, to give the story room to breathe and have more incidental moments to round out the characters or show more depth.

But, maybe I'm spoiled after watching series like Ergo Proxy, Ghost Hound, Kaiba, Lain, etc. They all let their interesting ideas settle and permeate throughout the plot (even if none give satisfactory, wrapped up conclusions). I'm sure they had much bigger budgets and more time as well. Devilman Crybaby felt like a no-frills production.

I'm 5 episodes in and I'm really liking this shows inconsistent grungy art style and animation. Idk if it's due to a limited budget but they're visually doing a lot of interesting stuff You'd normally find in a short or OVA. English dub is also really great. On par with Funimation quality dubs. It was a bit hard to hear in episode 1 due to everyone talking in fast pace but it quickly got better.

It's not a budget issue. It's Yuasa's genius style.

Speaking of which, does anyone know if the ending credits song in episode 9 is on youtube somewhere?
