I don't view it as a wall of shame. A lot of those posts help people secure deals, etc. Constructive posts imo.

Posted this on Facebook for my friends earlier and figured I'd do it here as well for an update to my last post on this.

If you're on the Public Mobile, Fido, or Virgin $40 plans from the end of 2016 and you find your data enough, don't bother with this. It's 50% more for stuff you don't need. If you're on Chatr or Rogers Pay As You Go, then go into a Rogers store and you can get 4GB of Data for $40 a month which is probably enough for you.

Every plan includes the following and you can get them until end of December 18th (some go until 19th) in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario:
- 10 GB of Canada-Wide Data
- Unlimited Canada-Wide Calling
- Unlimited Canada-Wide Text / Picture / Video Messaging

There are some slight differences between providers.

Freedom (Shaw)
+ $50 instead of $60
+ Another $10 off a month for 20 months if you bring your own phone making it $40
+ Unlimited Calling to Canada and the United States
+ Unlimited Global Text / Picture / Video Messaging
+ If you know a Shaw or Freedom employee who has a coupon left, get another 35% off ($32.50)
- $20/mo add-on for 1GB of data with voice and text while roaming in the US or Carribean
- No travel add-ons for outside the Americas (you'll need to grab a local SIM)
- Worse Network

Note: you get 500 MB of data, 2400 minutes, and Unlimited Texting for free even when you're roaming on Rogers/Telus/Bell networks so the coverage works out pretty well still.

Fido (Rogers, Rogers Network)
+ Unlimited Global Text / Picture / Video Messaging
+ Data Bytes: For 1 hour, 5 times a month, get unlimited data (good for tethering)
+ $6 a day to use your plan in the US as if you're in Canada up to a maximum of $60
+ $10 a day to use your plan in many other countries as if you're in Canada up to a maximum of $100
- Fido has increased prices on promotional plans in the past

Koodo (Telus, Bell + Telus Network)
+ Unlimited Global Text Messaging
+ No history of increasing prices on promotional plans
+ $10 a day to use your plan in many other countries as if you're in Canada up to a maximum of $100
- $7 a day to use your plan in the US as if you're in Canada up to a maximum of $100

Virgin (Bell, Bell + Telus Network)
+ Member Benefits which include discounts and stuff at a number of places
- $5 a day for US roaming for voice/text and only 100 MB a day of data
- $10 a day for roaming in many other countries for voice/text and only 100 MB a day of data

Telus
+ Save $3 a month by bundling with Telus home services
+ $10 a day to use your plan in many other countries as if you're in Canada up to a maximum of $100
- $7 a day to use your plan in the US as if you're in Canada up to a maximum of $100

Rogers
+ I remember there being Rogers bundle discounts if you're in a province with Rogers home services
+ $6 a day to use your plan in the US as if you're in Canada up to a maximum of $60
+ $10 a day to use your plan in many other countries as if you're in Canada up to a maximum of $100

Bell
+ I assume they have bundle discounts?
- $6 a day to use your plan in the US as if you're in Canda with no maximum
- $10 a day to use your plan in the US as if you're in Canada with no maximum

If Freedom is fine for you, go with them. Otherwise I'd go with Fido or Koodo depending on which network you find better. Correct me if I'm wrong on any of these points.

I wish I could get that $60/4GB data plan, but I'm still locked in a contract for my iPhone 6S. In a year it'll be paid off, but by then I'll need a new phone and, considering how expensive iPhones are, I'll probably be forced into another contract. :/

I would, but it's still $320. :(

Looking at the money I'd save, it would more-or-less break even with what I'm currently paying + what I've be saving if I purchased the contract out, but then then I'd probably need one of those "premium" plans anyway for my next iPhone, so I doubt I'd be able to keep the $60 one if I didn't want to spend a massive amount of money to buy a new phone outright.

Why are these phones so damn expensive!? It's times like these I kind of regret being in the Apple camp, things seem so much easier if I were to go with Android (more competition, lower prices).

Are you using Orchard to sell your old phones? If not, you should! Download the app, and follow the steps. If you don't want to deal with Kijiji, it's by far the best way to sell your phone.

Android phones are cheaper, but Apple phones are worth far more on the secondary market. Not sure how that shakes out in terms of value, but I'm very glad I can pay for a good chunk of my new phones with money I make from my old ones.

Finally making the splash on upgrading to the OnePlus 5T once my fantasy football winnings come in.
My grand total including taxes and shipping will be $53.90. Not too shabby.
And if I manage to somehow win one of the championship games this weekend, I'll have that covered and a little extra on the side.

If you're fine with Freedom, just pay this off and go on Freedom for an iPhone 8. It'll be $50 for the plan + $15 a month for 2 years. Total cost of phone is $360 over 2 years ($65 a month) and then the plan reverts to $50 a month.

Google Pixel 2 now $799 in Canada, Pixel 2 XL drops to $1,009 https://mobilesyrup.com/2017/12/17/google-pixel-2-now-799-in-canada/

Still pretty expensive but better than before

Gonna grab this or the S8
That's $300 more than doing the following:
  1. Go to any store selling the Pixel 2 on Koodo. I recommend Wow Mobile because they have a trade-in promo.
  2. Sign up for a new Koodo plan on a Large Tab. You will get the Pixel 2 for $0 + $15 for SIM card. You're doing this on a new number on the $74 Tab Large Plan.
  3. Once you're finished signing up, go home, call Koodo and tell them you'd like to cancel. You can tell them that you thought about it and it makes more sense to stick with your old plan. You won't be returning the phone so you'll pay your Tab balance.
  4. Pop your old SIM card in and use your phone. You'll receive a final bill for a day of service or so, $504 + tax.
So yeah, Pixel 2 is $504 + $15 SIM + tax. If you want a Pixel XL or Galaxy S8 it's $200 + $15 SIM + $504 + tax.

The Wow Mobile trade in promo is really good. You'll get $75 minimum trade in value for ANY phone with a valid IMEI (not reported as lost/stolen). So your old flip phone from 10 years ago works. Your broken down phone that doesn't turn on and the screen is shattered works. The $75 can be applied towards the cost of the phone, SIM card, or accessories.

For people looking for a new phone and want to spend even less, check out the LG G6 doing the same thing but on a Tab Small. It's $120 + $240 on Small Tab. Total cost is $360 + $15 SIM + tax. You can apply the $75 towards the upfront cost by trading in a phone.

I haven't been, I mostly gift my older phone to my parents so they can get an upgrade, haha.

Bu thanks! I'll be sure to look into this when I next upgrade (should my parents be okay with their current phone, of course).

Man, this is tempting. I'm not sure if I'll break the contract/go with them now, but if not I'll definitely keep them in mind for when my contract is up. I really don't like how Rogers locks you into the really pricey data plans, when I don't need a lot of the stuff offered with them. I'll be sure to search around before I sign another two years, although I'll probably opt for the iPhone X at that point, since I'll want something more current when I upgrade.

I love this story about grocery stores profiting off penny rounding. I'm not convinced if it's accurate, but the fact that an undergrad's "for fun" research project can get this much traction on national news is a pretty remarkable achievement

I got Koodo to switch my existing Manitoba plan over, and I got to keep my 15$ tab for my iPhone 8. I waited on hold Saturday morning for over an hour but WELL worth it. Ever since IG/Snapchat stories, I had been going over my 5GB of data every month.

Has it been peer reviewed yet? June 2018 is a ways off but I'm not sure how long the process takes in getting a study published, to be honest.

I doubt it. She would have to put in 100s of hours at the grocery store to get a solid sample for average bill of cash paying customers as well as average cash paying customer per day. On top of that she would have to do different study's for economic regions as well as grocers who charge more such as sobeys vs no frills.

I'm sure she has a good idea but most likely not a credible economic breakdown to trust the dollar valuation.

Although I could be wrong lol

How much longer is this 10gb/$60 going on for? And should I just go into the store and ask for it? I'd still have to leave my contract with Bell that expires in January

Well I don't think her method involved sampling actual grocery store bills. She used a computer simulation to model it. Like you said though, I suspect this study wouldn't stand up to the toughest scrutiny. I just think it's cool that she did something on her own with zero funding and is getting a lot of attention for it.

This is the problem I'm having with these deals. My current plan is $50/month and includes 4GB. I haven't used more than 3GB in a month since I got it.

I guess with a 10GB plan, I might use my phone differently (watching more videos on the go, etc.), but what's worth more, that extra data or the $10 in my pocket?

"... cash purchases are now rounded up or down to the nearest five-cent increment."

I have never seen it rounded down. If an item comes up to 0.96 cents, it has 100% of the time been rounded up to $1.00, which is yet another personal reason to not use cash.

Just to comment on these cell phone deals , I went in to a Koodo store location and ported my number over to the $60 10GB plan on Friday. There were some hurdles since I was already with Koodo but thanks to someone already in the know I was able to make the switch.

IMO this plan should have been offered years ago by all carriers. I remember when I had a $60 6GB plan with a new iPhone 4 in 2010. Pretty great plan at the time but voice mail and call display were extra. I am surprised it's taken this long to get increased data at a reasonable price.

If Freedom's network grows and becomes reliable and they are able to keep their prices down then we'll see more of these plans but that's what people, including me, were saying for years with Wind

Think I am going to stick with my $40 4gb plan from Public Mobile. I have been mulling it over and I just don't think I need the extra data. I hate the though of missing this deal but it's $20 saved. Hopefully I don't regret it.

iPhone resell for quite a bit. I upgrade every two years, buying phones outright, and I get about half what I originally paid.

The phones are expensive now likely due to exchange rate. With ample credit rating, you can get a iPhone 8 from freedom mobile with $0 down and two year contract. I was actually comfortable going contact this time, since the plans were all just upgraded and paying $360 for an iPhone 8 over two years is a fantastic deal.

Lol thanks to whoever reported me. Someone is delicate. Wasn't using it as a slur, I see it as being concise.

Edit: Cool I got "1 warning point" too. I wonder what the ratio of warning points to moonbucks are? Or even bitcoin?
