If you have a mega drive 1 power supply kicking around it also just uses one of those.
I tend to play most of my portable games on public transport so that prob won't work :p

I tried getting into the Tail's Adventure game on 3DS but it ended up being a bit too simple to hold my attention. Shame because a Metroid style game on GG sounded pretty cool.

Shinobi II: The Silent Fury (also known as The GG Shinobi II) is easily my favorite Game Gear game. I wish the Genesis installments of Shinobi had adopted that structure, as I always felt that the Game Gear Shinobi games always had more depth to them.

Streets of Rage 1 & 2 GG > MS versions (they were not the same)
Arguable. SOR1 is probably better on MS, with bigger sprites, but the GG version sprites have some charm. SOR2 on MS is actually held back by being a Game Gear port with that versions sprites.

All four are super choppy 20fps games anyway, none are very good really. Then again nobody seems to notice that the original Mega Drive version ran at 30fps too.

I keep meaning to play one of the GG shinobi games, they're on the 3DS right?

Otherwise all I can add to this is the same as I'd say for the master system and that's the 8 bit Sonic 1.

Sylvan Tale and Defenders of Oasis. The first is a delightful action rpg with some clever level design and character transformations to open new parts of the map up, and the second is a solid traditional RPG with an Arabian Nights theme and killer music.

Zenki is a cool platformer, Japan only, that doesn't get much discussion. Nice graphics for the system. Part of the same franchise as the PC-FX Zenki game, which is said system's finest game.

Sonic Triple Trouble is legit really amazing. Probably Top 10 Sonic games material and it's often overlooked. I'd dare say it's better than any other handheld Sonic title ever made.

I usually prefer to play Master System versions when given the option (Sonic, Mickey) but the GG Shinobi games, Aleste games, Royal Stone, Fatal Fury Special, Galaga '91, Devilish, Soukoban World, Shining Force, Chuck Rock II, Puyo Puyo, are all great.

There are some advantages to the Game Boy and Lynx. The Game Gear doesn't have as many exclusive great games/versions as those when factoring in the SMS but it stood out for having a few "best portable game in its genre" moments for me: the Shinobi games for action platformers, Power Strike II/Aleste II for shooters, Gunstar Heroes for run 'n guns (Operation C on GB is close), Shining Force for strategy games in English, Fatal Fury for fighters, Devilish for ball and paddle.

And some stuff may have lost some significance but were notable for being unique at the time such as Crystal Warriors being one of very few Japanese-style SRPGs on the Western market at all and Dragon Crystal being a portable rogue-like.

It's certainly the best GG Sonic, better than 1 IMO.

Up there with Advance 1 I guess (Advance 1 having better control and physics for obvious reasons).

I've always enjoyed Streets of Rage and Mega Man on the game gear, in spite of MM's scrolling issues, it's still super fun.

Yeah they're about equal grounds almost to me. Advance 1 plays better (and has Amy Mode which is amazing) while Triple Trouble has the better level design (Outside of the water stage) and soundtrack. Both games ruled

Ristar GG had better physics and slightly different content (no Scorch, Undertow, or Ice Cream level, but got a new Freon 2 and a pirate ship), and is solid as hell, but the real MVP of the library is the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fighting game, which was so far ahead of even arcade fighting games that it was honestly mind boggling at the time. The speed, responsiveness, and dense movesets still make it the best portable-first fighting game of all time. I find it sad that I never see people discuss it, even on an enthusiast site like this one. It's easily a top ten licensed game to this day.

I was really into the X-Men game, but I always got stuck on a late game level because I didn't understand what I was supposed to do. I looked online recently and realized a lot of people got stuck as well.
