This is an odd move. I personally think that the big guns for Sony, Last of Us 2, Ghost and Death Stranding are going to be pushed into the launch window time frame for the PS5. The games will come out as PS4/PS5 games because I doubt Sony would want to loose by that time close to 95million PS4/Pro owners. This gives the PS5 some incredible launch titles or launch time frame titles. I can see it Ghost or Last of Us 2 launching with the PS5, with the other game about a month or so out and Death Stranding early 2021. That would be pretty amazing. Those games would be marketed for both the PS4/PS5.

Yeah I can totally see that.

So we already have "Copying Nintendo", "Huge Mistake" and "Arrogant Sony". Good start so far.

This is a huge mistake for Sony. Gamers look forward to E3 as a huge seasonal event. Sony not participating will come off as a weakness than anything positive. And the fans are going to resent them not showing up.

Phil Spencer just has to walk out at the microsoft conference and say "We are here and we're here for the gamers" and all of the Xbox One launch nonsense will be truly wiped away. They will prove they are the real "gamers" company.

Lol, go outside for awhile.

Well that was a big wtf moment. E3 is gonna feel really empty next year.

I wonder if MS is gonna double down and have a huge showing. If third parties want to show off their games that's gonna be the place to do it.

Well Sony's conferences where driven by their exclusives. If they got nothing new to show, then it was gonna be empty anyway. And Microsoft's show this year was way more enjoyable to view than Sony's

At one point people say show games only when they are close to ready, and next people are pissed at Sony to show anything just for the sake of having a presence at E3 ?

That's a bold move from Sony and from the outside looks the best one. Rockstar doesn't even do conferences and still manages to get across the news. What's wrong with Some having the good balance of both of the worlds.

And who are we kidding. This year's Sony E3 was lacklustre. Better do it like Christmas or don't do it at all. I take leave from office for E3's so I say good decision if they aren't confident they can out up a 2015 like show.

1. Pretending to have nothing to show to avoid digging for leaks?

2. Trying to make Microsoft steal the show and show their hand (next Xbox) sooner to get info and possibly upstage them later?

Eh, no biggie. Their 2018 conference was so fucking bad and cringe worthy.

They're probably either going to host their own event earlier or just save everything for PSX then but I imagine they're done with this generation so yeah, save everything for E3 2020

I mean if you want to talk respect you might want to read up on Super Smash bros Ultimate because you clearly are ill-informed about it and then re-read your original comment I quoted I think.

I'll actually play it but from what I've been reading even on big publications, it isn't a new game let's say.

I would imagine Microsoft is pretty thrilled with this news. They have their own theater across from the convention center, will get access to a ton of third-party reveals, will have much more compelling third-party marketing deals, and will dominate the news cycle. As their first-party studios get cooking, they should be able to deliver pretty outstanding press conferences. I understand wanting to control your message, but there was something pretty damn magical about E3. In what other entertainment industry, other than sports, do the three biggest competitors all agree to go head-to-head in a format like that.

Sony doing E3 type conference on their own is my guess. they have to show GOT and Last of us before release anyway. maybe they will show off PS5 as well. take all the headlines for themselves.

so they're taking a leaf out of microsoft's book and shifting resources from development of late-generation games to development of games at the start of the generation to provide stronger launch lineups

that's highly disappointing
You mean cross-gen games?

Because I imagine that all launch Scarlett games will at least run on the X in some form.

OMG WHAT?!
even ignoring how crazy that is for them to get out the biggest gaming even of the year, what's the point of announcing this now?

You don't let people get their hopes up too close to E3.

You get them used to the idea that Sony won't be at E3, so their disappointment will have faded by then.

nintendo always does e3. they just don't do the cringey conferences anymore.

I was just going to post that the timing of this seems odd. It could of been that the people running E3 had a deadline for the big exhibits and instead of word getting out that way they just decided to let people know now. It just seems a bit odd with the timing.

Why announce this now in November and on the 5th anniversary of PS4? It's just so random.

There's nothing wrong with this approach. Games are still releasing throughout the year as they always do. And there's nothing special about E3 for it to be the one and only say that publishers can talk about their games. Now Sony does not need to wait to talk about stuff until June if they do not want to. And likewise, they don't have to talk about stuff too early in fear of having to wait another year before sharing new information. If information is ready in May, we'll hear about it in May. If August, then we'll hear in August. And if that also means the following January or February, then so be it. We shouldn't be locked into one arbitrary day for game news.

Do we really want to see TLOU PT II, Death Stranding, and Ghost of Tsushima without a release year/date/window again? The real answer is no.

Sony showed too many games way too early this generation. Now they have to suffer the consequences of that. But this consequence might lead to a new and better way of managing their portfolio. The only way Sony will learn if E3 is necessary or not is if they skip a year and see if the engagement from consumers is better or worse, or possibly unchanged.

It could also be a case of them just really needing to reload before PS5.

They can't use the last of us as a staple of another e3. They know it, and apparently there's just not enough to justify an e3 this year.

of course they can, what a silly thing to suggest

it's The fucking Last of Us Part II, the sequel to one of the most acclaimed games of last gen. how many E3's did spider man show up at?

After this year's E3 Press conference, good. That was one of the worst ones I have ever sat through. The games were opposite of bad, but the flow and presentation was so fucking bad

My assumptions from this
  1. All Sony first parties have shifted to PS5 development, and Sony can rely on third parties to announce PS4 games themselves, so a Sony E3 conference is somewhat uneccessary.
  2. Sony will likely want an E3 where people can get hands on with PS5 prior to launch, regardless of if they use PSX 2019 to announce the system. So PS5 launch is probably late 2020.
  3. If both 1 and 2 are right, the PS5 will have a decent launch library.
  4. Even if it's not much further along, Microsoft is almost certainly going to announce Xbox 4 at E3 2019 to dominate the conversation. Nintendo will almost certainly announce switch 2.0 as well.

It will give Microsoft a nice boost, especially if they reveal a new console.

But it is not a "mistake" for Sony. PS5 simply won't be ready in time. PS5 will be revealed in the second half of 2019 and the launch lineup will be at E3 in 2020.

Count on it.

Unless I am mistaken, Sony revealed that they will not be holding any events in 2019. Radio silence in terms of press events from Sony in 2019.

In case I wasn't clear I'm talking about exciting new announcements. I'm really looking forward to The Last of Us 2 and Remake 2 for example but I've know those games were a thing for literally years and years.

That's where it'll be very thin on the ground, which sucks.

And FWIW I'm generally not interested in the vast majority of 'AAA' games.
The majority do tho, and TLoU 2 was already announced so your comment about about how there's nothing exciting until TLoU 2 is confusing to say the least and imply releases not new announcements. The PS4 is at the end of its life and have quiet a few exclusives yet to be released so it's expected (still stupid tho not to string some 3rd party contents with new trailers and gameplay of their games)
Unless I am mistaken, Sony revealed that they will not be holding any events in 2019. Radio silence in terms of press events from Sony in 2019.
They will just not around E3 time.

I doubt the ESA was taking the release date of the PS4 into account when they released the show announcement. This was not Sony officially announcing they're skipping E3, this was info found in a press release from the ESA, not Sony.
I was going off this:

It's only weird because you're making it weird. I doubt Sony even realized it was the fifth anniversary with how little it means at this point.
How am I making it weird?

You're probably right that they don't care much about it. I only saw one twitter post.

I like that people are optimistic for the PS5 launch titles, what did 4 have? Killzone, Knack and Infamous?

Thats not an excuse.
To my knowledge, MS is not skipping E3.
I think MS's situation is a little different... they still need to show more from Halo Infinite, and Gears 5 and Ninja Theory's next game that Phil said will be unveiled in 2019 while also pushing and building the Xbox/Win 10 ecosystem.
In short, they need to 'prove' themselves more than Sony does because they were the underdog this gen.
Also,Sony simply announced probably 99% of their 1st party games they had for the PS4.

Yeah like, how E3 works, you opt out of one year, you've basically lost your place. Sony can't just it out one year and get the booth space back the next.

Hmm. Not sure how I feel about this.
One part of me wants them to show something, even if it's pre-alpha concept work on whatever their core studios are working on. I imagine you could do a 45 minute show, a live demo of TLOU2, some dlc trailers, some VR announcements, a couple of early announcements that are still not ready to be shown - that would fill out the time just fine.

Alternatively, I do like the idea of Sony just holding off and then just melting faces with the PS5 announcement - showing the hardware and The stack of new exclusives their studios are working on. It would leave 2019 a bit dry but there's a few big games still to come that we all know about.

So Ghost of Tsushima and Death stranding will be launch titles for PS5..

Interesting development.. but not being in E3 can give MS quite the PR advantage. MS "reveals"/shows of XCloud at E3 2019 and perhaps a glimps of Scarlet at 2020..

Interesting

Smart move. E3 will breath a little more, 3rd party games will be given more space.

Aaaand, hype builds up, as we all know they are cooking something huge. They'll get A LOT of press with the PS5 announcement next year and won't be caught or distracted by a flood of other news. :)

that makes a bit of sense, i wouldn't have known that the planning for next year's e3 would start around this time of year tho.
