No they didn't Nintendo just stopped doing conferences, they still had a Direct to announce games at E3 and a large show floor presence. Sony is completely skipping E3.
That's not what he's referring to, he specified 2016 because that was the year that Nintendo only brought BotW because that was really all they had, I don't even think they had a Direct.

Someone explain to me why would PS5 cause Sony to skip E3 altogether. Neither the PS2, PS3 or PS4 caused that.

I find this strategy bizarre.

The past doesn't have to dictate the future? Things evolve and change over time. Many gaming journalists have written about the diminishing effect of giant trade shows like E3. It cost millions to do a live press conference and rent out floor space at the convention. In this era there are more cost-effective and direct ways of communicating with your fanbase.

This is going to be a huge hit to journalists, attendees . . . man. I've never been a PlayStation-focused guy, but for all who are and had already booked travel/hotel/etc. for next year, do they just cancel now? Or hope third parties have enough to show off to justify still going?

3rd Party's opting out now with now Sony leaving and doing their own thing is more likely than anything.

Because the timing won't work for them. They don't believe PS4 will have a big enough lineup to have a conference, let alone be at E3, for 2019. And the PS5 won't be ready for reveal until the second half of the year.

I'm pretty sure this is more about Sony don't wanting to be showing again the same games that yet have to release. The Last of Us 2, Ghosts, Death Stranding, etc etc. This Ps4 line up of already announced games is pretty big actually, bigger than the MS one for example.

Yup. Stop copying the Square Enix book of "we had an idea here's a trailer now don't ask us about it for two years".
It really does suck. Dreams, TLoU, Death Stranding and Tsushima were all announced absurdly early.

I think a year at most should be the goal.

If you're only going to ship three AAA games a year, you can only announce three a year.

This is Sony basically saying we don't have enough first party titles to show you in 2019 cause we busy with PS5 bitches. That's how l interpret it.

"Nintendo no longer doing press conferences at E3"

"Sony dropping out of E3 entirely"

Didn't the Nintendo switch do exactly that.
Nintendo is a very different example though. Sony appeals to the hardcore audience and relies a lot on third party support. If third parties are attending E3 and use it to announce their games, then Sony has to be there. Nintendo relies heavily on first party titles and doesn't really need third parties until after launch.

Only if E3 becomes completely irrelevant before the PS5 announcement, Sony would have the luxury of skipping it. Of course, Sony is the only one that has the power to do something like that.

That's just lame. I have no interest in Sonys offerings but it was still always fun to have all the exciting gaming announcements at the same time. Every publisher having their own events completely separate from another just takes a lot of the fun out of it.

So they won't be at E3 at all? Or are they just don't having an conference?

Nintendo compared to Sony lol Sony is miles ahead, one good Game (Zelda) doesn't make you the greatest or that would be R* or Cyberpunk lmao

So what we see is what we have pretty much to look forward to for PS4 now?

That means PlayStation as a whole is going to be very, very unexciting until basically The Last of Us 2.

That is definitely a bummer. Regardless of Sony's intention and whether or not it works out for them ultimately things are just going to be boring for a while.

yeah they didn't have a direct in 2016. Reggie just sent condolences to the Florida club shooting (it was that week) then rolled the BotW premiere trailer. After that it went straight to treehouse

Oh boy.
If true, then they are making everything for PS5 already.

Not sure if it's a good idea to skip E3 completely.

It really is. I think people will start to take notice of it. Directs have really come into their own.

Well the main reason that they came into being in the first place was because, depending on who you ask, either journalists were unable to understand Nintendo's announcements, or Nintendo's were downright inept with their messaging. See E3 2011 with the Wii U "What the fuck is it?" debacle.

Rather than change the messaging, Nintendo just threw up their hands and decided to talk directly to gamers, rather than play broken picture telephone with the games media.

I don't even care about TLOU2, honestly. Literally the only thing Sony showed at E3 this past year that even perked my ears up was Nioh 2.

2019 is gonna be rough.

Huh? The E3 Direct was one of the worst they've ever done.
Talking more about the format of directs in general. Having multiple throughout the year where Nintendo practically owns the gaming media for a period of a few days, and doesn't have to split it with everyone else for the one mega event of the year that they all go to.
