You can't even say the movie had bad legs like BvS or SS and got to a good total off the strength of purely its opening weekend or an empty schedule

It's legitimately had a pretty good run throughout.

Good for Sony I guess.

Still, if they expect even a fraction of this success for a Kraven or Morbius film, they're in for a rude awakening. I don't even think a Black Cat film would do that well.

It's not a bad question honestly. A Venom movie without Spider-Man still sounds dumb. I don't think anyone can deny that it's a surprise it's performing so well.

I mean, a solo Venom movie is outperforming the Justice League. There are no rules anymore.
To me, a Rhino movie without Spider-Man sounds dumb, but unlike other Spider-Man villains, Venom has a mountain of non-Spidey material to draw from. I think many didn't realize that he's always worked great, if not better, in his own solo stories than as a guy who just fights Spider-Man. Also, I did think it could beat Justice League since WB messed up royally with that film to the point where Doctor Strange ended up outgrossing it. Venom is more popular than Doctor Strange.

Star Wars has always done really well in Japan though. Even the originals.
And you look at Lucas's history of influences and such... you can see many parallels of Star Wars and Japan. Remember that for Obi Wan, Lucas wanted Toshiro Mifune (Spelling?) for the role instead of Alec Guiness. He also borrowed a lot from Kurosawa etc. Lots of Japanese related influences in the movies. That's probably how it broke through their cultural walls

I think it's more because Japan was already back then developed country. Only developed Asian country so Star Wars probably had big marketing push and people had money to go to cinemas (and there were cinemas everywhere) unlike in most of Asia. That way now when new movies came Japan was pretty much only asian country that had major nostalgia for the franchise. I mean original films didn't probably even have distribution in China back in 70s and 80s that is huge market today.

How close to Spider-Man: Homecoming do expect it up.

Not that close.

Homecoming made $880M.

Venom has an outside chance at $800M with great legs in China for a Hollywood blockbuster. Granted, studios make a lot more from the domestic gross than they do from China. China is mostly good for making impressive worldwide totals.

In terms of lifetime revenue for the actual studio, $1 in US box office is worth around $5 in Chinese box office. After factoring in box office cut, home video, and other ancillary earnings.

I can't speak for China, but in the 1970s, Bollywood had one of their golden era's during that time and some of the superstars now come from that era. Lots of western influence in media at that time, hell everyone was wearing bell bottom jeans and all that in India during that time haha. But like you said, they never released the movie in that territory at the time so nothing to go by. But even now lots of Hollywood movies outside of CGi/Action don't resonate well in that region

Venom was fun, it's bad, but it knows it and just wants to be crazy fun, that alone makes it easier and more enjoyable to watch compared to a good handful of MCU and DC movies.

Anyone remembered that thread on Era where Spider Verse would outsell Venom?

Hahahaha

I liked Venom but it's reaching Black Panther levels of entertaining film that is massively overachieving.

Venom was a weird movie. It wasn't particularly well made, the supporting characters and villain were forgettable, the plot wasn't anything original and the final fight was a big CGI mess.......

Yet it was still a lot of fun, mainly because of Tom Hardy's batshit insane performance and his interactions with Venom.

Why is everyone ragging on the DC films when the chart shows Venom easily clobbered Age of Ultron, Black Panther, Ragnarok, and Civil War?

Not to mention, ya know, Homecoming, the most relevant comparison.

Just when I thought we would finally kill that witch Avi Arad from Spidey related films. Thanks China.

Although I'm actually really curious to see more of little orphan Annie Kasady in the next movie.
The movie would have gotten close to $600M without China though. China just added the bow lol. I wanted Avi Arad gone too :(

To be fair though, I actually enjoyed the film (particularly the moment Venom and Eddie got paired up). Would have loved to see what this film would look like without producer interference though.
