Imagine the higher price tag helped (most PS1 games were going for $40 towards the end of 2000) but it is still a bit shocking to see Pokemon Stadium topping that year.

I worked in video game retail from 2000-2015. People just do not understand how huge Madden was for a few years there. It was literally the start of the video game buying season for a considerable amount of buyers, and the retailers as well.

Really interesting seeing MK3 here. I've seen some retrospectives that treat it like it was a bomb. It just feels like such a particularly interesting situation because of how aggressively marketed it was for the time, pretty sure Midway said the budget was the largest they'd ever committed for the industry. That and Williams was dead set on making sure MK3 and DOOM would be on everything they could possibly convert it on.

Enter The Matrix is certainly something. Is it like the best selling bad game ever in the US MatPiscatella

Heh. Made me go start watching some Enter the Matrix videos. Oof.

The top is ranked by dollars. Weren't Nintendo 64 games much more expensive than those on other platforms? $80 dollars or so, if I remember well.

It's impressive, but that point and bundles would explain it.

PS: Sorry if it's been discussed before.

Sales of games bundled with hardware are not included.

It's so weird to see Episode 3 on that list in 2005- the same year the 360 came out. It feels like licensed movie games should have not been as big by that point

Man.. So much COD Domination. No wonder they'll never retire the yearly model. Still interesting to see how the Music fad overtook everything in 2007-2008, even above COD, Wii Fit and Halo 3.

Market certainly became less varied and more mainstream in the US after 2002.

Here to hope RDR2 manages to overtake BO4 this year at least!

People doubting Pokemon Stadium. It's Pokemon in 3D. DO YOU NOT REALIZE HOW CRAZY THAT IS IT'S LIKE THEY'RE REAL

MatPiscatella As a Canadian, I've always wondered if the top selling games are noticeably different in the US and Canada. Do you have any charts or information about that? I remember hearing that Nintendo has always had a larger market share in Canada than in the US for example but I have no idea if that is actually true. Also, would American military games like Call of Duty have the same level of dominance here? Thanks for any info

Sure... overall, the lists will be very similar. Big exception is NHL will always basically be top 3, and FIFA generally charts a bit higher as well. But the same big franchises are on the list. I'm hoping to be able to start doing Canadian charts and summaries in the future.

Wow. the number of times GTAV charted over the years. It'll be a Long time before we see a run like it again.

Wow, I hadn't realised how much much CoD has continued to dominate sales even if the games appeared to have gone downhill and fallen out of favour over the last few years.

Halo 3 never made the top 3 in 2007? Wtf I thought that game was crazy sales wise in the US or I guess Guitar Hero and Madden just sold crazier numbers that year.

Halo 3 was huge in 2007 but ppl need to realize Guitar Hero was at it's peak in 2007 as well. It was selling gangbusters on all 3 consoles.

I worked at Circuit City that year, we would get stacks of Guitar Hero bundles and they would be gone just in few hours.

I had no idea Star Wars Battlefront II (2005) and Episode III were so popular. The number 2 & 3 best-selling games in 2005? Wow! I would have thought God of War might have got up there. In fact, there's a noticeable lack of Sony-published titles in the expanded list. Even Microsoft managed to get a few Halos and Gears of War into the no.2 positions in their years of release.

Nah not at all, much prefer the post-2001 list (like most people, apparently).
Can't say I understand, like, at all.

Surprised some of you have gave me flack for this post, I would've thought ERA would want to see a bigger variety in the IPs and genres represented on the best sellers list, but whatever I suppose

Fascinating. Nintendo dominating the late 90s despite having the less popular console. Then Madden, a quick fling with rhythm games and then Call of Duty. What trend would dethrone CoD? I honestly expected to see much more open world games in the more recent years...

I noticed. This is in an era when FFVIII, GT etc came out and Playstation dominated. N64 still managed to ship the biggest hits. Though Pokémon doesn't surprise me, I saw it everywhere.

Ofcourse, the N64 had less spread. Probably more quality on average as well. Sony was flooding the market with software.
