What a bummer. If they put more effort into this and had a better selection of games, I would have been all over it. I can dust off my PSTV and have a better PS1 player than this.

have you seen the tepid (i'm being generous here) response to game lineup?
Yes but that doesn't mean there isn't a bunch of great games on it. People are going to bitch about anything and the ps1 has such a diverse lineup that it won't please everyone since we all want different games on it.

Wow, way to fuck this one up Sony. I'll just get a Rasberry Pi.

The hell, how can they fail this badly?

I feel like they're almost definitely making a revised model next year for about $130 with a better lineup and dualshocks to compete with N64 Classic's enviable release.
Yeah, my guess is Sony has already planned for a superior version of the PS1 Classic to release after the first wave (with dual shock and a better selection of games).

It's certainly not going to please Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Tomb Raider and Medievil fans I can say that much.

Edit: Castlevania fans too. Throw them in as well why not.

Why did you cut that part ? He seems to say it has noticeable input lag mainly compared to good old CRT.

They feel soupy in the hand - though that's as much the fault of modern displays compared to the more responsive CRTs these games were designed for than anything else.
We still don't know how is the input lag on this thing.

Sound like Sony doesn't care about PS1 legacy and just want some quick buck after the retro plug & play console rise in popularity.

I am still surprised that only Nintendo invest in making good Plug and play console. Plug and play only got popular again since NES classic is known to be good, there were many cheaper NESclones with 100s of games before and those don't sell much. PS classic will do well at first but i am not sure if it will performs well after its initial shipments.

NES/SNES classic are good but they are the only good plug and play consoles i guess. Oh, i heard SNK mini is decent too.

I'm so going to give a hundred for a console I already own, that only runs very few of the games I love that I also already own as a bad emulator.

The only nostalgia I have for this console is having to reverse it so the top is on the "floor" to be able to run games. The nostalgia is in games... the are mostly not even available in it.

It'll be for multi-language support. Shame that there's no option to switch between the two though, or that English speaking countries in PAL-land can't have the NTSC versions.

Jokes on you, there's no multi-language support. Jokes on me too, because the Spanish dub for MGS is really good and they're not including it.

Is sad to see Sony not treat their legacy with respect
Sony doesn't give a fuck of their games:

-PS1 Classics stopped releasing years ago on PS3, with plenty of games which we won't ever see again. Some stores got titles like Dino Crisis 1 and 2, other stores like the european one miss those games. It was very random.
-PS4 can't run PS1 games, so they gave up on potential sales for those games without even trying. Emulate a PS1 is very easy, PS4 can run PS2 titles with no problem, so PS1 games can run too.
-PS2 Classics initiative died on PS4. There were games with a rating which never got a re-release on PS4. The PS3 PS2 Classics line-up is again very bad, there are some gems here but there are so many missing titles too.
-Some of those PS2 games on PS4 run very bad, see Jak titles.

On one hand you have Microsoft which is investing on backward compatibility, on the other hand you have Sony which doesn't give a fuck, they tried to release a couple of games, saw they didn't sell milion of copies like they hoped, they stopped releasing games. Also add the fact some PS2 classics cost 25€ like Star Ocean.

The weird thing with the report on the European versions is that's from Chris Kohler in America...we're definitely going to need to see those in action, they can't surely be 50Hz on the American version can they?

That was always going to be tough when it came to language support in Europe, as PunishedSnake says it's a trade off for language support vs performance. If they still go with 50Hz on some titles hopefully at the very least it's not forced to 60hz output like Wii U VC and some PS2 Classics on PS4, that'll have noticeable judder

Oh boy this is really sad Digital Foundry and My Life in Gaming on this should be fun

Yeah I'm super curious to see their reviews of it, particularly after the Eurogamer report on soft scaling and possible input lag. To be honest the NES and SNES Mini are a bit disappointing with their filter options, namely due to no decent scanline shader, but at least the scaling is pretty sharp (if full of shimmering on NES in 4:3 mode).

Honestly it was always going to be an uphill battle having 240p 3D games on a modern TV in 2018, even for nostalgia I do wonder how palatable that'll be for modern consumers.

I'll wait till then because everytime i hear something new about this product it's always bad news. While the 50hz thing won't be an issue for us in the US, the lack of save states is a complete deal breaker.

ok? doesn't change my point at all if anything it's exactly what I said.

I know. I'm just extrapolating your point by specifying just who exactly could be disappointed by this console's games. You may even have heard of 1 or 2 of those franchises as well I reckon.

Thought there might be some extra emulation options or at least nostalgia trappings, the fact that there isn't anything and some of these are the EU versions is unacceptable, preorder cancelled RIP

This thing has got to be my biggest gaming disappointment of the year... easily. The PS1 is my all-time favourite console, there is no other system I have such sheer nostalgia and fond memories of, but the PlayStation Classic feels like such a wasted opportunity. Based on these articles, it's clearly just some hastily-cobbled together cash grab. I mean, when the full list emerged, my stomach sank anyway - I can't say I'm particularly eager to pay £90 for a device with Battle Arena Toshinden, Cool Boarders 2, Rainbow Six and Rayman on it - but these new details have cemented how lacklustre a product this is. Only one save state, 50Hz version of games, the cruddy interface and general lack of options. Seems like Sony doesn't give a fuck about their legacy enough to do their first ever console justice.

I'll cancel my pre-order, put that money towards a PSVR investment and hope that the hacking scene comes through later down the line. Fucks sake Sony, come on.

Anyhoo, this is a nice quote from the Eurogamer article that made me feel all fuzzy inside...

Jumping Flash! felt so ground-breaking back in '96 (when I played it... I think). Where's that VR sequel?!

Seeing your avatar brings back warm fuzzy feelings of playing Broken Sword on my PS1.

Crash Bandicoot is literally the best selling series on the damn console in the USA. not having the mascot of the console on the system is very much analogous to not having a SMB representation on the NES Classic.
If sony owned the ip than it would be equivalent but chances are the reason it's not is because of the remaster.

I don't know why you have to pretend to speak down to me, I'm not telling anyone they can't be dissapointed and I stand by the fact nobody was every going to be happy by the lineup. Heck there are other games I wish were on it.

i mean, the franchises you mentioned are pretty key and would do a good job in appealing to the casual/lapsed gamer market that the NES/SNES classic did.

see above. consumers aren't going to care about licensing deals, they're going to care about being able to play the games they remember on the system. i'm sure casual gamers are dying to play the first destruction derby and a coolboarders game over Crash or Gran Turismo.

Not sure what you guys were expecting.
How about a proper CRT filter for any of this? How hard is it to get something like CRT Easy Mode setup for a system like this?

That being said crappy emulation isn't going to work for 3D games. And 2D just looks weird to me without a CRT filter. I honestly don't think all that many people are going to enjoy this as much as they think... the previous classics were all better.

I don't understand why you would use a third party freeware(?) emulator instead of putting in the "little" work of porting the self-made and great working ones to ARM.

Nintendo didn't bother as well on their NES classic the emulator is nothing more than the BSD version of Higan stripped of all of the other cores (so GB / GBC / GBA / SNES)
Same story with the SNES classic it's nothing more than the SNES core of the BSD version of Higan that has been slightly repurposed.

Uh no you are wrong here

Regardless of internet articles or echo chambers, the reality is that this is still going to sell a heck of a lot.

It's the Playstation 1.

It's crazy that they've been able to fuck up one of the best consoles and line-ups that ever graced this media.

Then again, good emulation is not the point of this machine that it's gonna sell like hot cakes anyway. Most of the people I know that bought the NES and SNES Mini actually never played them. They're trendy little pieces of nostalgia and that's what it is. Sure I hoped that Sony could do a little more.

Oof, didn't know Sony can fuck up things like this. It's a simple device that prints money. How can you make it as undesirable as it is now?

both destruction derby and coolboarders are great games though. I understand wanting other games on it but again there are reasons why they are not on.

Most PS1 games are barely sufferable nowadays anyways. Most of them aged way worse than SNES or even some NES games.

Well I totally disagree with this. There are a ton of PS1 games that are still great today and given the choice I'd rather have the PS1 library to play over both SNES and NES any day.

50Hz nowadays is even worse than back in the past. Unless the console outputs 50Hz (which will cause compatibility issues with some TVs), the output will be the original 50 images per second mushed into 60 frames sent to the TV per second. It will have the same issues as PS2 games on PS4 - those games will be a mess.

50Hz Tekken 3 was bad enough in 1998, it's utterly ridiculous in 2018.

I don't understand the decision to release PAL isos, anyway. I mean, italian users here and Sony had no problem on putting on PSN US versions of RE1, 2 and 3, yes they miss the italian language but they come with 60 Hz at least, so they sacrificed the language to offer a better performance.
The 60Hz Resident Evil games on the PlayStation Store weren't because they wanted to "offer a better performance". Those were games that were published in Europe by Virgin Interactive, under license from Capcom. Since Virgin had imploded, there was no license to publish the European version of those games. Capcom got around that by publishing the US versions instead.

That's also why those games appeared on the PSOne Classics range in Europe almost three years after they got released in North America.

Well that is disappointing and shame on Sony for treating the legend like this! I just cancelled my pre-order and will most likely wait a couple of months for a price drop, just to have it in my collection. PS Vita remains the best way to play PS1 games for me.

I cannot believe how bad Sony handled this thing.
First, the game selection is debatable to say the least, though not as bad as some make it to be. But man, 50Hz is downright awful.
