It is really shocking and dismaying this is going on in general in this country. But to have it happen in a city I have felt built up extra social factors to prevent something on this scale happening so quickly compared to the rest of the country touches a deep nerve for me.

Society doesn't function well just by giving extremely punitive prison sentences. 7 years for hate speech does not benefit society. It just causes us to spend a lot of money to support somebody for an action that isn't worth that much money to prevent. Remember that the money spent on keeping that prisoner alive and ethically comfortable for 7 years could be better used helping people.

what about the economic toll on society if racists and other far-right extremists feel emboldened to do shit like this? how many people do they drive to depression etc, that has a very direct effect on the economy i would guess.. if large groups of minorities have to fear for their lives, and have to teach their children to be afraid.. how can we expect them to use their full potential to become productive members of a society that allows hatred towards them? i certainly wouldn't feel motivated if my ethnic group was targeted, and my country as a whole didn't seem to care too much.
i dunno, i just feel like i've seen enough of this shit and i would want sensible authorities all over the world to stamp down HARD on any elements of fascism, to show we mean business.. make them afraid, make them crawl back into their holes.

Of course the guys going to the border are inspired by Trump. What does that have to do with a young black man burning Jewish centers? A young black man who used to work on behalf of targeted individuals and groups. Perhaps this situation is more complex than "Trump did it !"

It's not surprising that this happened- this is the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Hasidic Jews and blacks have had a history of strained relations there. A lot of it has to do with the Hasidic sect being so seclusive and dismissive of anyone who is not them. I'm Jewish- they don't even consider me a Jew.
