the difference is, in that case we already know what kind of DLC it is, and it's the good kind

here, it still remains unknown, so there's a non-zero chance it's the bad kind

And that instant negativity or this must be bad seems to be the default reaction for a lot of people to go to, shame really.

Ninja Theory, a studio who previously worked with mental health advisors to help them in production of Hellblade to ensure a fair and accurate portrayal of mental health issues in that game and who donated $100k from the games revenue to charity have now since the acquisition by Microsoft and this new job posting turned into a greedy nefarious business that wants to steal our money through lootboxes and MXT's. It's just sad.

Why people so much against GaaS. All games with long term DLC plans are essentially Gaas games .Gaas doesn't mean pay to win, MTX heavy games . Smh

yes MGS really needs to work on their public perception a publisher. that public perception is indeed very sad

hopefully they acquired ninja theory to do just that rather than to do the opposite, by changing them from a single-player studio with old-school non-exploitative business practices to one focused on microtransactions

Btw analytics should be part of any business that deals with mass consumers. Any and all of them. You aren't being responsible if you don't use analytics to surgically understand what is working and what's not working with your consumer.

yes, best art has analytics.

we need better ways to maximize addictive behaviour. think how shitty casino slotmachines would be without analytics

Could just be multiplayer, or project xStream related (that would actually make it much more of a GaaS than what colloquially is considered GaaS by some people here). Either way, we know Microsoft wants to leverage Azure every way it can, so it's likely GaaS. It makes sense for them, though it would kill my interest if so.

I love NT....I hope the game is similar to their past projects i.e Hellblade ,Enslaved or DmC....I'll be there day one. these guys are super talented and know how to craft some amazing experiences. MP only, Gaassy or strictly SP..I'll be there day one.

RARE is not the same not even doing single player games anymore and FASAgames died right with the launch of Shadowrun.
Fairly certain Rare has come out and said they chose the games they did. And Sea of Thieves is definitely a game Rare did by choice. Not to mention MS's team has changed so much in the recent years that it's a little short sighted to look so far into the past for these kind of things.

All GaaS games that nobody seemed to have an issue with. But scaremongering has made this out to be a bad thing in the eyes of the gullible.

Are people really gonna pretend that games today don't send analytics to the developer? Quite literally everything you use nowadays probably sends something to whoever now.

Also this talk about Microsoft ruining game studios by making "gaas" titles is funny as fuck. If you have played any game that has post launch support (so pretty much every modern video game) then congrats, you've played a gaas title no matter how in denial you might be.

RARE is not the same not even doing single player games anymore and FASA games died right with the launch of Shadowrun.

So Rare not doing single player games means they're ruined now? As the poster above mentioned, Rare chose to make this game.

What does FASA have to do with GaaS? I honestly don't know the story behind this one.

lol wut?

receipts / explanation?

Our podcast team has interviewed several executives on the Xbox team. We talk to them when we go to events like E3. We have conversations with them. We actually had a long talk with one of them about single player and GaaS titles a while back and he specifically pointed to titles like God of War and The Witcher 3. They view any type of post-launch support (including DLC expansions) as GaaS.

And yes, I am aware that since this conversation happened there was a statement by Barlog denying there were any plans for God of War DLC. Even if that never happens the point remains that a purely single player game can be seen as GaaS in the Xbox team's eyes.

They have a few teams so it shouldn't be surprising at least one of them could be working on a GaaS project. Doesn't mean it's MP either.

I just want a simple singleplayer AAA high rated game like Spiderman, God of War or Horizon.

These aquisations are nice but I don't think Ninja Theory or Complulsion are big enough to make a game like one of the above PS4 game examples I have given.

I'm hoping The Initiative or Playgrounds 2nd team are big studios that can deliver a high quality AAA singpleyer game. I wonder if those studios are that big.

I'd take 1 Spiderman or 1 God of War over 10 Contrast, We Happy Few, Hellblade tier games.

I don't like the implication of the thread title. Like we're already looking for reasons to be upset and we don't even know anything, and we're years away from reveal.

I don't think that is a perception of Microsoft's making, well not on there own anyway. Out of all of their games that are GaaS which ones have been predatory or generally bad for gamers?

Microsoft's perception on this board is bad, really bad. Threads pop up and are instantly filled with negative comments, shit posts and hot takes which then reinforces the idea to a lot of people that Microsoft is a bad company and so it goes and so it goes. It's that original Xbox One reveal (and a lot of built up animosity) that is still stinging them to this day.

It chanced very recently so far not seen results, but I'm hyped for what could bring to the future.

I guess Halo 5 had some lootboxes (even if they are generally unintrusive) and Forza has tons of DLC? Thats all I can think of.
MS in general seems to do DLC well.

Actually, a GaaS cooperative character action game from NT would be a dream come true for me, especially if they just take what they learned from DmC: DE and go from there.

So consider me interested.

I don't believe RARE chose that game by the own will, I think Microsoft had a lot to do with making a game like a service, RARE just chose why the want but with GAS as a priority. But past is the past I want to believe in the future what could they bring but seeing news like this frustrate me a little bit because I don't like GAS games because the lack of time.

I think it's fine, the job spec does all point to GaaS but the lack of monetization models or even mention of revenue means it doesnt sound like Lootbox GaaS.

This is Ninja Theory, the team behind Hellblade. If anything, the bullet point to focus on is: "perform regular deep-dive analyses to investigate player behavior." Which sounds like a natural progression of where they were going with Hellblade.

Witcher 3 isn't gaas. By that sense, every single game that has received a patch or two or an expansion or two in history of gaming is gaas, so most games ever is gaas.

Any post-launch support is GaaS? OK well that's them just diluting the term past the point of relevance. I guess they're free to hold that opinion, in as much as I'm free to laugh at them for holding it.

Appreciate the prompt and polite reply BTW.

Halo 5 was for Warzone there social offering, there was no MTX advantage in Arena there competitive offering. Forza Motorsport and Horizon have paid DLC but its not restrictive or gameplay changing to the base game. I'll be happy if they stay the same course next gen.

So Mario Odyssey is gaas?
Barely, but yeah. GaaS refers to games that get post launch support/content so that their longevity increases.
I this "Rare didnt choose to make Sea of Thieves" based on anything or is it just a conspiracy theory because you dont like Microsoft.

Gaas is literally supporting a game over time, it's really not that hard to understand.

Think of it this way: GaaS means titles having long-term support and updates, as opposed to "closing" a project once the title ships and the high-priority known-shippables are fixed. It keeps a team in place in a way you wouldn't have in the past, and whether there are extra layers of monitization is a separate thing.

MHW, Destiny, DOTA 2, Warframe are gaas games, not Super Mario Odyssey and Witcher 3.

No disrespect, but if you don't understand how the Witcher 3 is a GaaS title, you don't understand the term (or the style of support the game had for years after release).

The Witcher 3 had a live team of developers continually adding content to the game post launch. That is literally "games as a service" so it is a gaas game. Your definition only includes multiplayer and that's not all gaas is.
