Abiy.jpg
BBC said:
The pace of change in Ethiopia has been so fast since Abiy Ahmed became prime minister in April that it is almost like observing a different country.

The reforms he has introduced were unthinkable not so long ago.

The government seemed impervious to criticism from human rights groups that the state stifled free expression, sidelined and imprisoned opposition leaders and cracked down on protests.

It also appeared steadfast in its disagreement with a border commission ruling that was meant to end the two-decade conflict with neighbouring Eritrea.

But all that has changed.

Basically, since being elected in april, he has ended a war with neighboring Eritrea by giving them some land, released thousands of political prisoners including the opposition leader in order to set a foundation for democracy, lifted state censorship, discovered a torture chamber below the prime minister residence that he plans to turn into a museum for the public and promised free elections.

He has already survived one assassination attempt. I hope he will stay safe because it seems Ethiopia scored jackpot with him.

IIRC the previous Ethiopian regime were holdovers from the Stalinist days and the country is finally moving past those politics.

Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed does press-ups with protesting soldiers

Ethiopia-Prime-Minister-Abiy-Ahmed-does-press-ups-with-protesting-soldiers.jpg

Abiy Ahmed was unhappy that soldiers had brought weapons and ordered them to do 10 press-ups.

They were among several hundred protesting soldiers who entered his office grounds to demand a pay rise.

The situation caused alarm, leading to road closures in the area and the internet to be shut off for hours.

Many Ethiopians wondered whether this amounted to a serious security breach, says BBC Amharic's Jibat Tamirat.

However, the smiles on the soldiers' faces as they performed the press-ups suggest the prime minister succeeded in defusing the situation amicably:
Dude is legit

One of those "shithole countries" has a leader more human and wonderful than the supposed leader of the world powers.

Reading up on him, this guy sounds amazing. I'll keep my fingers crossed that he can keep Ethiopia on this new track forward, and that his efforts towards peace and democratisation will outlast his time in office. I was going to suggest I hope a Nobel Peace Prize will be in his future, but considering Aung Suu Kyi hasn't had hers revoked, I think the prize has rather lost it's meaning.

Impressive stuff. Ethiopa post-Selassie II recovered all too slowly under the junta, so it's good to see someone's in charge who cares and wants to do right by the public. I hope this administration sticks true and completes the constitutional reforms Ahmed's pursuing, same with helping to defuse Eritrea. Those liberal economic policies, though...hmm.

Good to hear he survived the grenade attack, and that only two died despite the injuries. If the CIA ruins this dude the way they did Allende, then I fear for the future.

Hopefully he stays the course and doesn't let power corrupt him and that whomever follows after him stays the course.

God bless him. He's doing a stunning amount of good work and showing the sort of character that I could only aspire to.

Let's hope that the CIA is in fact too busy between the Trump administration, putting out fires in the Middle East, and internecine conflicts to pay too much attention to this guy. It seems plausible-- so I can only put my hope in that it might be so. Africa needs some real self-determination.

Ethiopia's only strategic relevance to the US is the help they provide against Al-Shabaab in Somalia. Unless this guy's a hardcore Islamist I doubt our security apparatus cares.

Ethiopia has detained 1,200 people over the deadly political violence that broke out a fortnight ago, police say.

These are the first mass arrests since reformist Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power in April.

...

Rights group Amnesty International has called for the prisoners' release.

In addition to those held in connection with the violence, a further 1,400 people were taken into custody following raids on places where people gamble, smoke shisha or chew the narcotic leaf khat.

...

Those arrested for the violence have been sent to Tolay military camp, which is known for providing what is called "rehabilitation training",

Fair dues. I doubt he'd stop providing help against Al-Shabaab from what I understand of the direction he wants to go-- he might even condemn them in stronger terms. Although after that assassination attempt, who knows.

What I'm hoping for is that the US and CIA get too busy to be picky.

The peace he managed to establish with Eritrea is remarkable.

I think it's just supposed to be a regular joke. Stop being oversensitive.

On topic - why isn't stuff like this covered more? I'd love to have regular updates on all the good things he does.
You mean a stupid joke. What the does a Nigerian email joke have to do with a country on the other side of the continent?
